The fried catfish and fried shrimp were fried perfectly. The shrimp was better though. The smothered catfish with the dirty rice was good. **Extremely Disappointed - Avoid This Place** 1 Star - Mold in My Food & Rude Staff Absolutely disgusting experience. I came here with my sister on our lunch break, and we found moldy cabbage in our tacos -- yes, actual fuzz growing on the food. It was completely unacceptable and honestly disturbing. To make things worse, the staff was outside chatting instead of answering the phone. One guy in particular was rude and lazy -- not someone who should be working in customer service or food service. When I returned to show the manager (or owner, whoever he was), photos of the moldy food, instead of apologizing, he was rude -- even though the situation clearly called for a refund and a serious apology. Eventually he refunded me, but only after being rude about it. It is clear there's a total lack of oversight when it comes to both staff behavior and food safety. The restaurant itself was gross: sticky floors, sticky tables, broken drink machine, and an unsanitary-looking kitchen. It's clear there are major cleanliness and management issues here. Stopped by here because it was walking distance from my hotel. When walking in, I almost turned around due to how the place looked on the inside. I haven't been to Gumbo Jeaux's in close to 10 years, back when they had a location in the Heights, so I was excited to take my wife but unfortunately it wasn't as good as I remembered. We stopped by on a Friday night around 6 PM and it was relatively empty. We ordered the catfish opelousas and a bowl of gumbo. The blackened catfish itself was good. The broccoli that was served with the catfish was probably the oddest I've ever had. I almost spat it out at first because it was so mushy. The fried shrimp was extremely salty. Overall this is not a dish worth ordering. The bowl of gumbo was on the smaller side, but it was only $8. Even with the portion being small, my wife could barely eat half because of how salty it was. I ate the other half the day after and I could barely stomach it. I felt like that small portion was enough sodium for the entire day. We left feeling disappointed and craving something sweet to counteract all the sodium. read more

I got a bowl of gumbo that tasted pretty good, although was closer to a cup in size. On top of that there wasn't a single piece of shrimp in there. So even if they claim their bowl is a good size, then there should have been at least 1 piece of shrimp. Plus, I found out later when I got home and looked at the receipt that this restaurant charges you a credit card surcharge of 3%, and was not notified before the charge. We order our food through Uber Eats although the food arrived hot and fresh it was not good. The gumbo was very bland and barely had meat just shredded pieces of chicken. The food here is pretty close to great. The poboys, burgers, cajun dishes are all great with lots of flavor. The red beans and rice sometimes doesn't get enough attention from the cooks and it sometimes comes as bean soup with some partially cooked rice. My only complaint is the drinks. I used to eat here all the time back when I worked in the area. First time back in 7 years. Really good food. The fried pork chops were fried to perfection. I wish they offered this dish but smothered like with gravy on top. The gumbo was absolutely amazing ! So was the mac n cheese! The food was great. I feeel like for the price tho should have at least came with some corn bread. Service is fast and friendly. Not many tables so it gets crowded pretty quickly. I feel like I was over charged. I went with the seafood platter but swapped the fries for their dirty rice. The seasoning was great and I loved the shrimp. The fish was big and hot as well. The rice was pretty good but not very warm. The platter was supposed to include a cup of gumbo but they must have forgotten to give that to me. The line was long and we didn't have much time, so I didn't bother them for it. My copilot had the pulled pork burrito and he said it was just average.
