This is a little hole in the wall ice cream spot tucked away in Paterson that would be easy to miss. Doesn't look like much from the outside but the ice cream is good. Tried the banana pudding ice cream and got a sundae made with peanut butter swirl ice cream and hot fudge. The banana pudding ice cream was very good. The peanut butter swirl was one of the best I've had. It was a very good sundae. The price wasn't bad and the kids behind the counter were helpful and polite. I will definitely be back to try the other flavors they offer. As I said it's easy to miss but worth the drive to give it a try. read more

If you've never been to Guernsey's you might initially be put off by this little, hole in the wall, weathered, and beat up looking mom and pop shop. Don't be fooled, you're not going to find better tasting ice cream anywhere. Guernsey Crest has been around since 1927, offering home-made ice cream with flavors that should tempt anyone's taste (yep, almost 100 years!). Nostalgic, would be an understatement. I had a Pistachio-Cashew cone. WOW! Fantastic, and with a super generous amount of ice cream. Honestly, as tasty and creamy as any ice cream I've ever had. Picked up some ice cream at Guernsey Crest Ice Cream Co on a Friday night. It's a small shop with a few parking spots in front, and it looks like it's been around forever. I like them specifically because they are one of the few places that serve grape nut ice cream. Their ice cream is very soft, and they sell half gallons to go for super cheap. Still the best ice cream pit stop ever! We visited this place with our god daughter a few days before she started her military career to service this country. Half-way through the order, she changed her mind from just "Strawberry" to "Strawberry and Chocolate" ice cream on her cone. The young man behind the counter said, its all good and he gave a scoop of each flavor which was exactly what she wanted. The rest of the family also enjoyed the various homemade flavors of GrapeNut and Espresso and Strawberry Cheesecake and Banana. All very tasty! I have not been there since I was a small child. I took my daughter there for a treat. They have the best homemade ice cream. I had the butter pecan and it was delicious. The staff are young kids but respectful and very attentive. My daughter had the rainbow sherbet she said it was so good she wants to go back again. The location is in the cut, they changed the inside to a modern look, but the outside still has the same nostalgic sign that I remember. Check them out, you will not be disappointed. I was delighted to "Learnsey" that they "Churnsey" their own ice cream. If you eat enough of it then you "Earnsey" yourself a big ice cream inflated tummy. But it's worth it. It wasn't, it's all-American, but what sets it apart and makes it some of the better ice cream I've tasted, is how rich in milk and fat it is. If you're gonna get ice cream, you may as well go all out and get the one with the best milk and fat contents (i.e. the worst, i.e. the most), because they taste the best, by virtue of being the worst for you. I honestly think that the higher milk-content, fat-content ice creams taste best. Antoinette's in Buffalo area taught me that. In any case, Guernsey Crest is fantastic. Yes they are behind bullet-proof glass on a back street in a tough neighborhood in Paterson. But who really gives two craps. Or even three of four craps. Good ice cream! I wasn't blown away, but can definitely say Guernsey hit the spot when I was craving ice cream. The cookies and cream was super flavorful and they didn't skimp on the oreo pieces. My only complaint is that the ice cream was a bit hard for my preference...I had to wait for it to soften for about 5+ minutes so I could lick it rather than biting it with my teeth. And the sugar cone was also a tad bit stale. The delicious flavor helped me overlook those flaws and still enjoy my ice cream. Awesome ice cream in a quirky location that I personally think is worth the detour. We slipped in at 8:45 just in time as the lights went out and doors were locked - they close at 9 but trust me, no one was getting in past 8:50! This was my second visit to Guernsey Crest and both visits were rewarded with velvety ice cream and a vast selection of flavors. Last time I had peach and pistachio and this time amaretto chip and grape nut. Yum yum yummmmm. Huge portions and unbeatable prices. Don't expect an amazing view unless you're into warehouse architecture but do expect awesome ice cream. Of course their was a mob of people waiting outside and that same mob is still present to this day especially on Saturday's and Sunday's. My parents would order butter pecan or lemon (gallon) and for myself vanilla ice cream with sprinkles and it was only $1.00... I didn't like sharing then and I still don't like sharing now....hahaha For many years their cones were $1.00 for a double scoop..then it was $1.25 ...$1.50...$2.00 slowly crept up...until hmm maybe like three years ago they changed their prices $2.75 which is still great. I'm not complaining you can't get these prices at Cold Stone, Baskin Robbins, and/or Dairy Queen. This is one of the strangest ice cream places I've yet to visit. Tucked off of a side street in Paterson, with nothing but a small hanging ice cream sign to indicate what the hell is going on. It looks like a converted office building or bank, with large glass windows that separate the cashiers from the public, as if ice cream laced with gold lives behind the walls. Yet, for a place that is so protective of their ice cream, Guernsey Crest also offers the largest sizes I've encountered. When we asked for smalls, the cashier picked up a random cup and asked us if it was alright. "Uhh, I don't know? Is that your small? If it is, yes. If it isn't, then no?" Am I supposed to tell you how much goes into a small? Just before we placed our order, a customer ordered a quart of ice cream. Heaps of ice cream were promptly packed down into a large Chinese take-out box. No doubt, this a quirky, off-the-cuff ice cream shop. Here's my breakdown (scores are out of 10, 10 being best): Creativity: 5 Nothing to write home about here. Standard flavors, with a few Seasonal specials that I didn't quite understand, like Rocky Road and Banana Oreo. Interesting flavors definitely come from the influence of local hispanic community, such as Lucuma and Passionfruit (kicking myself for not trying the Lucuma, but I'll probably be going back, so OH WELL). Taste: 8 As always, I ordered a scoop of the most intriguing flavor I could find. In this case, it was Grape Nut (yes, the cereal). Grape Nut was phenomenal. Definitely difficult to describe, as the flavor was at once delicate and distinct. Each flavor was light on the palette, with just enough "oomph" to find yourself longing for that next spoonful. Texture: 8 The texture here is really what blew me away. It was almost like a mix of ice milk and ice cream, though I realize that makes very little practical sense. A miraculous trifecta of air, cream and density. Atmosphere: 3 Aforementioned, this place isn't much more than a parking lot. There are a few benches outside for enjoying an ice cream without a view. But I didn't come here to see pretty things. Overall: 6 If you're in the area, it's worth the trip. I know many people won't give this place a chance, solely based on location, but it's definitely quality ice cream. Although Guernsey Crest has great tasting ice cream the overall atmosphere/experience of buying ice cream there is horrible. Between the panhandler in front of the store, long and unorganized lines, poor decor and impolite young workers (please give them a work shirt or some type of uniform), my favorite hometown childhood ice cream store is a disappointment. I'll drive the extra miles to Applegate Farms or Gelotti's for just as good ice cream just to have a better overall experience. read more
