    Cuban sandwich and Arepa Pabellon

I was craving a Cuban Sandwich and saw the menu for Guava. It was authentic and beyond delicious. I could have cried from how good our sandwich and arepa were.

Great vibe & even better food! Love the family business. Fresh flavors and ingredients made every bite worth every calorie. Shared the 3 Amigos tostone, plantain & yuca basket. 3 entrees at the table- a Cubano, Arepa (AMAZING), and a chicken sandwich. Homemade hot sauce -holyschmoly.... Tasty and SPICY! Highly recommend.

The special. Ropa vieja with yuca fries and fried bananas , avocado , rice, beans and salad. $16.50.

Delicious. Hearty , full of flavor. It's in an older adobe structure. No music, quiet with great posters.

Pernil split sandwich with Caribbean spice runbed pork and nicely sauced. Great sandwich!

We were on way home from a weekend in Santa Fe, New Mexico and needed a meal for the plane. After searching the internet and yelp, we were intrigued by reviews of Guava Tree Cafe with two locations. It needed to be a quick stop and not a messy meal for the quick plane ride home to Phoenix. We chose the Tin Can alley location as it was closer to our route. The Latin American and Caribbean sandwiches looked too good to pass up. Our order consisted of the Cubano and the Pernil on a crispy and compressed sandwich baguette. A good Cubano has always been a favorite and this did not disappoint. The slow roasted pork was covered in ham, melted Swiss cheese, light coating of yellow mustard and pickles on a pressed roll. It was "perfect" and the flavor was bold. Nicely done! The Pernil was a spiced rubbed and slow roasted Caribbean pork covered in Swiss cheese, carmelized onions and a garlic sauce. It was also pressed. The seasoning was spot on and enough sauce without being sloppy. We encountered a small issue on the plane, other passengers wanted to know where we got the sandwiches at the airpirt and would we sell them? To Guava Tree Cafe, you do a very nice job with these two sandwiches and don't stop being inventive. We will be back to sample more of your delights.

    Do not recommend.

I honestly don't know why people enjoy this place, I regret coming here! We only decided on this joint because the Thai place was closed next door. Walking into the restaurant, you can already smell and see how bad it will be. The restaurant looks unkept and looks extremely old and extremely dirty. We decided to sit outside and I ordered the Guava Pollito. I should've looked at the photos on Yelp, because it came out looking very unappetizing and not edible. I tried to finish the sandwich but ended up throwing it away (I've attached my photo). I would not come back here again.

LOVE this place and all the sandwiches. The yucca fries and Cubano are a 10/10 for me. The sandwiches are cut horizontally giving a thinner slice which is so good.

LOVED this place! The food is amazing and so flavorful. The staff is so sweet and helpful. We loved it here!

When visiting Albuquerque I always stop here for lunch. My favorite is the Guava Pollito sandwich. Shredded Chicken Breast, Swiss Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Mushrooms, Greens and Tomatoes, with our signature garlic sauce on wheat. Very flavorful! Friend staff and fast service.

Arepa, cuban sandwich, unique sparkling lemonade (with cinnamon and clove spices)

After our flight in from CA, we caught a ride to this cute, homey cafe with limited outdoor seating. Service was friendly. Ambience was a little dark inside but in a fun adobe-style building with a few 4-seater tables in the front and a couple taller 2-seaters on the side next to the parking spots. Cuban sandwich with fried plantains was good, though had slightly drier bread and meat than some others I have eaten. Fried plantains were delicious and sweet--just the way I like them. My friend and I got the sparkling lemonade with spices (including cinamon and clove), which reminded me of Christmas a little and was refreshing. My friend got the arepa: she found the meat to be a bit dry, could have used more cheese, but overall solid. An overall enjoyable lunch spot: good food, more mom-n-pop ambience, unique lemonade. Probably would not go out of my way to come back, but I'm a little spoiled when it comes to this type of food.

I love love love Guava Tree cafe! I have never had a disappointing experience at their original location in Nob Hill! Their cafecitos are so authentic and good!! I could have 8 of them. The service is always friendly and the ambiance reminds me of my grandmas house, super cozy! The sandwiches are also so good.

Amazing staff and efficient, clean kitchen :)

A hidden gem just steps away from UNM.....the food and vibe and love are as amazing now as they were when I shared my first review several years ago. The main feature of this review, the Pelotero, offered just the right amount of wonderfully tender and artfully seasoned ropa viejo, slightly crispy sweet plantains, yucca fries and a small house salad; and that heavenly creamy garlic sauce continues to rock my world! This excellent "lunch special" plate is accompanied by a large glass of Guava Tree's unusual and delicious lemonade....brown sugar, cloves, and cinnamon make this a unique and refreshing treat! Speaking of that special sauce, my friend's Pernil was topped of with a generous drizzle of that special garlicky wonderfulness. The bite that I enjoyed would have been quite excellent with just the juicy roasted pork and the delectable caramelized onions.....that sauce really took it up a notch! Thanks for continuing to share delicious food prepared with love, Guava Tree! Yelp on!

We walked in and started reading the menu and chatting with the man at the counter. He helped us pick out *five* vegetarian pupusas. Pretty good start! We ordered the calabacitas and cheese, the green chile and cheese, the loroco and cheese, the spinach and cheese, and the bean. Then the guy was surprised we wanted to eat there - guess you only order at the counter for to-go. We also inquired about the aguas frescas, and upon being assured that they were not that sweet, ordered a tamarindo and a melon. We grabbed a small table under the TV playing cumbia and other Salvadoran music videos. There were several other folks in the place so we got to look at some of the other offerings, including huge bowls of menudo and possibly even huger tortas. Our pupusas came fairly quickly for pupusas (some places will advise you that they can take 15-20 minutes) and came with two sides: a bowl of a very thin but flavorful salsa, and a mound of red cabbage slaw that reminded me just a bit of a pickled situation. Two of us were able to eat the 5 together, although 4 would have probably been enough. But now we've tried them all. The green chile and cheese was my favorite; the calabacitas was also good. The bean would be better with cheese; I might try to eat it with a cheesy one in the future. Also, the aguas frescas were aMAzing. Definitely the best ones that I have had in Albuquerque, and possibly the best outside of Mexico. Just a delight! The only knock on this place is that they close at 6pm every day, so if you want them for dinner you'll have to get takeout the last hour they are open. They do have several breakfast-y options though, so maybe the next time we visit (and I definitely want to go back!) we'll make it a brunch thing.

The menu initially sounded creative, especially the waffles featuring pepitas, quinoa, and blue corn, which led me to assume that the same thoughtful use of ingredients would carry throughout the rest of the menu. The blue corn enchiladas were the clear highlight and were genuinely delicious. Unfortunately, the red sauce served alongside them tasted noticeably canned. I had hoped for a fresh, house-made sauce that would complement the quality of the enchiladas. The calabacitas were also barely seasoned and could have benefited from much more flavor. The eggs Benedict was disappointing. The addition of a sausage patty made it feel more like a typical American breakfast than the regional and authentic dish I had expected. Many of the available sides were also potato-based, mainly hash browns or French fries, which made the menu feel less varied and imaginative. The blue corn porridge was acceptable, and the generous amount of berries helped bring the dish together, but the porridge itself could have been much more flavorful. There is plenty of potential here, particularly if more attention were given to fresh sauces, seasoning, regional ingredients, and a wider variety of side dishes. The service was good, and the meal overall was fine, but based on my experience, it was not distinctive enough to justify making a special trip.

As for mains, I typically gravitate to the grilled chicken thigh and stuffed potato. (I'm a creature of habit) Its filling and very flavorful with grilled goodness and the tater is stuffed with chicken. Its glorious. Next on my list of "gotta tries" is the Chimichanga with the cilantro rice. The chimi is crispy and not greasy. The filling is seasoned just right and has me craving more. I always slather some of the green Aji sauce on the chimi to create a heavenly compliment to the Chimmi! The cilantro rice is fluffy and perfectly seasoned where the cilantro doesn't overpower the flavors. I suggest coming early or later for lunch as it is busy from 11am-1:30pm. If you do have to wait if it's busy, is well worth it. The owner is welcoming and friendly. He always greets you with a smile and cheerful "Welcome". He also has stories he could share for days. The room is pretty but overly warm and reeks of grease. And there were some additional cleanliness issues. I want to return for the food, but if the other issues aren't addressed it may be the last time. Tons of grease smoke hanging in the air (the kitchen needs more serious ventilation - I texted and warned a friend not to come, as she hates the smell of cooking grease in her hair) when we came in at the early end of lunch (the place filled up pretty well behind us - it's Tuesday). It's a nice enough room (loved the painting of Bolívar and the Venezuelan tchotchkes in the case by the door) with plenty of seating - grab and read a menu, order at the front - it prompts you for a tip (went on the heavier side even with the counter ordering because I want El Chamo Arabe to stay around) and the counterwoman (not the friendliest person, but not rude) delivers everything to your table when it's ready (which will be a minute - but you're not here for _fast_ food). The room is pleasantly decorated but overly warm and - well, there's that grease smell issue: it was bad enough that we had to change clothes after eating here. Okay, prices seem reasonable. But when the food comes, prices seem downright _good_ - these folks give you a LOT of food. We got a $5 dolmas appetizer to start (juicier than what one usually finds; quite good) which came with the grape leaf rolls sitting on a pretty tasty dressed salad. We sure didn't need it, though: our mains (a shwarma plate with gyro meat and an arepa picada with one of chicken and one of beef) were really large. Really large. And it's tasty food. Enormous salads with both $14 plates: dressed well with great, fresh romaine leaves cut just right for easy eating. I'd note with some surprise that both the shredded chicken and beef on the arepas were pretty tasty, but was surprised to find the chicken grabbed me more. There is habañero salsa (albeit in a greasy bottle) on the tables if you need piquancy (why not? we're in New Mexico), and that was great. I'm not sure that the plentiful quantity of the mustard/ketchup (or was it Russian dressing?)/mayo sauce drowning of the arepa picada salad was a good thing. It was pretty, but it got to be a bit much for my taste down toward the bottom of it all - I'd ask for it lighter next time. The lunchmeat turkey and American-type cheese slice and perfectly cooked round fried egg certainly added to the salad, and the arepas themselves were a delight. My wife liked the rice and gyro meat and salad of her shwarma plate. Here's the thing: in addition to the grease-in-the-air situation, there were some cleanliness issues. The table where we sat (it was dead when we arrived, except for some waiting DoorDash drivers) hadn't been properly wiped and there were some old rice grains on it. The bottles of habañero and other salsas on the table were grimy and needed to have been wiped. The tray on which the silverware was brought to our table was greasy - repositioning it on the table to make room for our food made me want to wash my hands. And there was a hair (not ours) in the salad under my dolmas: I didn't mention to my wife because she would have stopped eating and I also didn't bring it up with the counterperson since the small restaurant was at that time full of lunching customers who didn't need to be troubled by hearing about it. And I know mistakes happen and I was not interested in a refund or apology; things happen. But I hope El Chamo Arabe customarily pays more attention to keeping things sanitary - the food is good enough that I want to come back and see. Food - 5 Service - 3 Atmosphere - 2 (lose the grease, fix the temperature and it's a 4) Cleanliness: 2 Value - ?

I asked her for a reminder buzzer to pick up when ready, and the girl claimed she gave it to my daughter. She did not. I went back to ask for it. She had to place a call to someone in the kitchen, in a separate building for my order number to get the right number. We sat down in the communal dining area for all the other mini restaurants there and waited over 20 minutes. I had gone back to see where the take out was. Finally I saw her bring it through the door from another location outside the food court. The chicken shawarma bowl was in the tray, but instead of the beef shawarma was a chicken shawarma wrap and cold French Fries. I told her she brought me the wrong order and begrudgingly she took it back outside to where she had brought it and 20 minutes later I got it. The bowl was 1/2 yellow rice, 1/2 romaine lettuce with almost no dressing and 3 of the skinniest sliced tomatoes I have ever seen and some cooked beef, very sparingly scattered on only the rice side of the bowl with a drizzle of a nondescript white dressing. My daughter was mostly done with hers when I got mine. I also orders the fried plantain side. It was 4 pieces, equivalent of one small plantain on one side of the cardboard serving boat and some shredded mozzarella on the other side! Now that is a bizarre combination! With almost no meat on either of our shawarma bowls, it was such a huge disappointment. The girl kept rolling her eyes with her mistake and then giving me dirty looks from behind the counter. In the 35 minutes we were there, we were the only people who had placed an order. With the lack of service, and overpriced items, this place will go out of business soon at The Block, just like the overpriced Thai place in the same complex that only lasted around 2 months!
