Inexperience can be very costly. Get a second opinion:
I woke up to no heat. Called Guardian who is around the corner from my residence. They sent out a technician (20 years old or so) who tinkered around the unit without any answers eventually snapping off the high limit switch with his pliers and blaming it on corrosion. He also blew the fuse which might have blackened the circuit board. He left without returning our heat after giving us an option to open the store to obtain parts for hundreds of dollars premium, which I declined. The following day, I got a quote for 4,000 worth of repairs. Decided to call another contractor who in turn came out and properly assessed the situation. It turns out I had a short in my thermostat wires which needed to be replaced. Only now, the high limit switch which was broken needed to be replaced. I opted to buy a new furnace rather than risk 50% the cost of a replacement, on a repair attempt. Only after the new furnace was installed did it dawn on me what happened. Whatever you do, make sure you get a second opinion and beware of any new, green, inexperienced or incompetent people they send out. It could end up costing you thousands of dollars.
PS: I do not want to paint the technician in an undeserved light. He was a very nice guy. We all don't know anything until we learn. To elaborate on the situation, the technician, who offered to open a store for $200 in additional to the $150 switch that he broke, was not confident that that would solve the issue. He also mentioned the gas valve and circuit board being bad. The solution? Two more $200 store openings for a total of $600, excluding the cost of the parts and labor. He was not confident that replacing even all three items would get the furnace working. For $600, I opted to wait out the cold weekend until the stores opened on Monday. Also, in addition to the switch, the technician was bypassing multiple items in the furnace turning it on and off repeatedly and in short succession resulting in a blown fuse, which he promptly replaced. Come Monday, I get the quote for $4,000 which included a 579.00 cost to replace the switch, that the Guardian technician broke. $600 is far in excess of the $350 I was quoted with the store opening charge which made it apparent that I either had someone that was not experienced enough to solve the issue or I was about to get scammed. I called another vendor who came out, tested all wires including the circuit board (as I mentioned it could be bad per Darwin's recommendation) and found that there was a short coming from the thermostat to the furnace. He wrote up a repair quote of $1,500 which included replacing the bad wires as well as the broken switch that Guardian broke, in front of me. Given that I did not have the cash to spend on a repair of a furnace I was now paranoid of, I opted for the replacement, on monthly payments at 0% financing from Deljo.
I am sure that Guardian has competent technicians I just happened to be sent a newbie. And I know he is new because he is 20 years old.
I wish that my luck had been different and I had either called Deljo or was dispatched someone with more experience who could have properly tested the system and found that only the faulty wire needed to be replaced. That would have saved me thousands but as fate would have it, I ended up with an expensive lesson. I have not come back to Guardian demanding anything but recognition in the mistake or missed assessment that cost me dearly. Instead, I got a defensive response.
In conclusion, I am recommending that Darwin and all reading residents out there make sure to check the thermostat connection as well if the issue is not immediately obvious read more
