This is the best lunch restaurant in Toledo. Just rented an office across the street; have been to Grumpy's on four occasions so far. Service is prompt and friendly, menu is very diverse, prices are reasonable. I felt compelled to review them today after having what was among the best sandwiches I have ever eaten, the tuna steak sandwich on a gluten-free bun. The tuna had a great grilled flavor to it and was perfectly seared, the sauce was perfect, and the bun was homemade, flaky, and biscuit-like. Every meal I've had there has been great. We've gotten in the habit of scheduling our meetings so that they end just in time for us to get to Grumpy's before a line forms. read more

They've got a lot of choices (if you like meat and sandwiches) and the service is pretty quick, but the prices are too high for what you're getting. I got the Crescent Wrench ($11) which comes on a pretty big croissant, but the ratio of meat-to-bread just isn't right; same with my mother's pulled pork sandwich ($10). Knowing that places like Zingerman's in Ann Arbor exist where I can get a sandwich that's so jam-packed with meat that it easily makes two filling meals for about $14 makes this place look weak. Quite frankly, you can't get a better lunch in Downtown Toledo. This place has been a staple for the lunch crowd for a couple decades. Whether you try their signature garbage salad or their creative take on familiar classics (their babalu is a fantastic Cuban sandwich), they elevate traditional American fare. Even their breakfast combines bold flavors to awaken your taste buds as you're waking up. My only complaint? They're not open for dinner. The girls and I came here to try the Sweet Potato Vegan Burger. They've been telling me forever that I need to try Grumpy's and now I can say that I did. Grumpy's has a comfortable feel to it. I love going here for breakfast or lunch. I've tried several sandwiches and I'm always pleased with what I order. I've never heard anyone say they've had bad food here. The staff is always friendly and attentive and the service is quick. Everyone in Toledo should try it! My favorites are the garbage salad, their O-ring sandwich, and monte cristo. My husband an I love Grumpy's and always get the salads, you can't go wrong. He gets the garbage salad and I get Jennifer's Special house salad. They are very good especially since he never orders a salad. Today I decided to treat my self and got two chocolate chip cookies. I remembered they were so good. I was disappointed to see so few chocolate chips in the cookie, being a chocoholic, I wanted at least a handful. I checked out the second cookie and the same thing! Hands down my favorite lunch place downtown! The salads are wonderful. Specifically, the garbage salad is everything you could ever want in a salad. Ok, over-exaggeration. But it still is WONDERFUL! In addition to the delightful poppyseed dressing, the ingredients are always fresh and I love that it is chopped perfectly into ideal bite-size pieces without the salad being soggy. I haven't tried much else on the menu have only heard good things. This place is always hoppin' on the lunch hour so try to get in before or after the noon rush. It's worth it! We really wanted to like this place. It's pretty brick buildings in the downtown area. I was not impressed with the set up of this place inside. I really question the kitchen set up-it does not look sanitary. The four of us tried a couple salads, grilled cheese, & a wrap. I will agree with other reviews: the portions are slim to little with a HUGE overcharge! Those in our party that ordered salads enjoyed them okay-but some of the items that were supposed to come on the salad were not available. So-shouldn't there be a discount in the salad price? Understand shipping issues/supply but if you are not putting the items you are charging for on the salad, there should be a reduced price. The grilled cheese was---whew, how in in the world is it over $11? There was nothing fancy AT ALL with this sandwich to charge that much. I would not say there was three full slices of cheese on the sandwich either---and barely any chips on the side. The wrap was very dry & again, hardly any chips with the wrap. For $14 & $16 for these items, there is no reason for them to not come filled to the brim. NOPE. Our server was non exsistent. We had to keep asking for items from other servers walking by---more dressing, more napkins---our drinks were NEVER refilled nor asked. We basically just asked any server that walked by, as ours only came once with our order & dropped off the food. I think it was the manager but she was very rude. A person in our party ordered mac/chz that never arrived with our order---it took over 20 mins later to get it & by that time, we had finished our entire meal & were ready to leave. Excuse after excuse--it's coming, they're making it. There was NEVER an apology for the delay-nor anything offered for the long wait. Again-when it was delivered, it was just basically thrown on our table. Not one thing said-sorry for the delay, here is a couple cookies for your wait, NOTHING. Again--just very, very rude waitstaff & again, the same from the manager. This place is WAY overratted, WAY overpriced, & filled with rude staff. I do not recommend this place at all. read more

PREJUDICE!! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! BURNT FOOD (or maybe they just serve burnt food to the dark peopleI go out to eat very much from small family owned places like this, to 5 star restaurants. I've never been treated like this EVER. I was greeted by a blonde woman at the door and I told her that I was waiting on a friend. She took me all the way to the back seating area right by the kitchen and the bathroom. Being the only darker skinned woman this instantly made me feel a little out of place (since there were so many tables that we past that were obviously available more towards the front. My friend even made a joke and called me Rosa. I didn't let it get to me and brushed it off right away thinking maybe there was an actual real reason she needed to seat me there. I asked her about the Vegan Chili and asked her if it is really spicy. ( I can't handle to much spice) she said yes it that it does have a kick to it. I proceeded to order some pita chips, the sweet potato burger, and the vegan garbage salad that my friend talks about so much. (Planning to take leftovers home for later) We never received a straw for our drinks. I had to go and find someone cause our waitress was pretty much non existent. The burger was ok nothing special, pita chips were burnt, and the salad was mostly nothing but lettuce and tomato's. (Garbage salads usually come with lots of ingredients) in efforts to make my salad more "garbagy" I started to open open up the three small containers to throw in my salad which were vegan chicken, black burnt vegan bacon bits, and salad dressing. After throwing in the bacon bits I grabbed a piece to see how it tasted since it appeared to be extremely burnt. The bacon bits were not only burnt and bitter, they were hot as hell! And my mouth had a horrible after taste. I got the waitresses attention as she was passing by and explained to her that the "bacon bits" were way to hot. She said, "well that's why we put everything in containers so you can put it in your salad separately" making it to seem that I was the problem! I explained to her that I never knew for real bacon to be so spicy so I wasn't expecting that PLUS I told you in the beginning that I am very sensitive to spice. She then said " well I can see if the cook can make you another salad but I can't guarantee that you won't have to pay for both salads!!" I didn't take ONE bite out of the salad mind you! Just had a bacon bit. She then said "well we can't resell that salad" I'll have to speak to the manager and see what she can do. I told her, I'm not paying for no salad. I'll pay for what I ate. (As I was slurping on my drink that had not been refilled once.) Upon paying for my meal at the front register to the short, gray haired older woman who I assumed was the manager, she YANKED my credit card out of my hand and then after seeing that I didn't tip she yelled to me "Your not gonna tip her after making her cry? Don't come back!" I told her I would NEVER even consider coming back the service was HORRIBLE! read more

O.K. - I thought this was going to be a Toledo food revelation, instead it just turned out to be a nice deli with tablecloths. I mean the food was alright but it wasn't jump out of your seat fantastic. I had one of the grilled sandwiches. It was still a little cold in the middle but it was tasty. My wife had the Rueben, which she enjoyed. I found that the prices, which seemed high were paying for the tablecloths and not the food. Our waitress appeared friendly but was also in a rush. She never came back after the order and someone else brought the bill. Lastly I see where the name Grumpy's came from, it is the guy running the place and the name says it all. All in all, an OK place to go if you have a couple extra bucks in you pocket but not a destination by any means. read more

I used to love this place, sure it has always been a bit overpriced, but it made up for it in other ways. Since "Grumpy's" children have taken over, it had gone down hill. I ordered the famous Garbage salad, and I think it this description of it will sum up the changes. The lettuce was clearly the machine cut, bagged, food service variety. It was dry, wilted, with the start of the browning around the edges from the machine cut. Lettuce cut by hand and given a cold bath is clearly better. The other ingredients were not diced as before, and the dressing once house made, is clearly now manufactured for them and bottled (they sell it that way). The price was absurd, $10 for the salad. This is a can't miss spot. Love this place. Try Ivan's homemade veggie burger... It is glorious. Had the morning bun as well, it is like half cinnamon muffin, half croissant... and apparently they are making them into french toast for breakfast. Always fabulous at lunch (ANY salad or burger or...... ANYTHING!). Now they do a breakfast that is fabulous and so fresh! Morning buns are unbelievable, and my favorite so far has been the Jennifer wrap. They added breakfast pizzas and they are great too. Hard to decide! Potato salad had no flavor. Waitress never came back to ask how food was. Flagged down waitress to get bill and was told she likes the food there. With an expansive menu of traditional favorites and wonderful salads Grumpy's is easily the best place for lunch in Toledo. I've probably ordered the garbage salad 30 times in the last 6 months. Their babalu is amazing and be sure to order some extra garlic mayo on the side. Portabella mushroom sandwich is also one of my favorites. Everything is made with care and the dishes have a very home cooked feel to them. It gets pretty crowded during lunch but the wait is never longer than 5 minutes. Went there for lunch and had the chicken sandwich. The piece of chicken was very thin and it was definitely too small of a meal for me. The food was excellent, but I definitely expected some more meat. The people working there were all very nice and the free cookie for checking in on yelp was a nice bonus. This place is for the hipster crowd of Toledo, and I love it. I went there and the ambience and decor is amazing, I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I heard so much about the Garbage Salad that they have, that I had to try it. The garbage salad was Super Good and is probably the best salad that I have ever had. A friend of mine got a buffalo chicken wrap (which was just okay), but she deserves it for not getting the salad. Would definitely love to go back once I get more free time during lunch. read more

Great spot for breakfast or lunch. Lunchtime is always bustling. Mornings are a little more low-key, and this is a great spot for morning meetings (free wi-fi). Staff is super friendly and the food is great. The cinnamon bun french toast is the best I've ever had (don't tell my grandma!). Terrific place to take out-of-towners.
