Private event on a Saturday night. We filled the space with 75+ and an excellent buffet was provided by the Grumpy's team. The menus hit all their menu favorites. The Mudhens were in town so the area was very crowded. Free parking was rough. This is the original location, and I've been here several times. Always positive. As of February It is under new ownership. The new owner, Vanessa, is very much on top of her game. Wish her great success in her new venture. I ordered a mini takeout salad and asked for it to be tossed. The dressing came on the side, which wouldn't be a big deal if the salad container wasn't the size of my fist. That's why I wanted it tossed. The "chili lime strips" are full size, stale corn chips. In my opinion, (and apparently a few others) it's way overpriced for the size of the salad that you get. A $14+ salad could be a bit larger, or at least served in a container that doesn't make you lose half of the ingredients while you're eating it. When you also add a tip and they don't bother to read the instructions, that's just the cherry on top. I guess I really did get a garbage salad. read more

First, I want to say that I grew up going to Grumpy's. Mr. Horn, the previous owner, called me Squirt and I am proud to say that I was one of the few individuals who could make 'Mr.Grumpy' himself, smile. I loved coming here for their BLT, Ruben, and Garbage Salad and so far the quality of the food hasn't changed, it's still as amazing as it was when I was little. The ambiance on the other hand... leaves a lot to be desired. Ever since Mrs. Grumpy, Connie, passed away and the ownership of the restaurant was changed shortly thereafter, I've seen the restaurant slowly lose the character that it once had. The inside walls used to be covered with local art, the hardware sign from the original business that was in the building and pictures of Grumpy's patrons throughout the years. Now, you walk in and its, quite frankly, boring. I'm so so disappointed in the fact that the new ownership thought that modernizing the decor was a good move. It's literally lost all the life and charm that made me excited to go to Grumpy's. I'll be getting takeout from now on because there's no longer a reason to eat in at the actual restaurant. I don't get the legendary status this place holds amongst the Toledo lunch crowd. Yes, the garbage salad is good, but has anyone tried anything else? I ordered the Bologna sandwich with extra onions and I received the sandwich pictured. One onion slice. It was not thick cut as advertised and also was cold somehow, even though it was grilled and picked up on time. I will say the bun was good though. If this was $5 I wouldn't be upset, but they charge $11.00 for the sandwich pictured and a bag of chips. 3 stars for good salads and sides. The rest of the menu is lacking in my opinion. read more

I have had so many friends, family, and coworkers rave about this place I finally tried it and got it door dashed to me at work one day. I got a southwest garbage salad and ordered an extra salad dressing with it. I didn't have high expectations for it because it's a salad but I was extremely surprised at how delicious and satisfying it was! I couldn't stop eating it and was full after eating it until the end of my work day. It is really pricey, like $15+ for a salad but it definitely was worth it and worth getting again. Thankful for a recommendation, as I really enjoyed this downtown Toledo sandwich spot! Came here for a business lunch with a longtime friend, and we have very different taste buds, but both of us enjoyed it. Plenty of street and lot parking nearby, an ideal stop before a Mud Hens game. Friendly customer service, short wait for a midday table. An average noise level. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and understood that we were there for business and didn't rush us. I appreciated a nice surprise afterwards when the person at the checkout gave us both a complimentary home-made cookie as first-time visitors! This is a great little sandwich shop! I ordered the O-Ring: "A toasted bagel with Honeycup mustard & mayo. Layered with home cooked corned beef, cooked salami, Swiss cheese & onion. Warmed up, juicy, messy & divine. $10" It reminded me of a Reuben sandwich but better because it was on an everything bagel instead of Rye bread. The sandwiches come with chips and a pickle spear. Passing thru town we stopped for lunch and what a lucky spot to find. Delicious, healthy, fresh, they have it all going Added charm was to see the local fire department stopped in for lunch, that was our first clue that food would be good here. Most of them ordered a salad so I did too. Amazing! My husband ordered a BLT, the bread was magical and the lettuce and tomato fresh and crispy, with a thick layer of crispy bacon. Just a reminder that the general opinion of most people in the Toledo/Sylvania Area is: Your pricing of your food is way out of line. Especially from other Restaurants in the area. Irony. IRONY, I say!! Grumpy's is chock full of irony! How so? Well.... The restaurant's name itself is quite ironic, because nobody in the place seems to be the least bit petulant! Rather, the staff is friendly, cool, helpful and FAST! I get seated quickly, my order gets taken quickly, and the food comes quickly. Helpful? Yep. This most recent time in, one of the ladies in the front even noticed that I fed some quarters into the parking meter (like I always did!) On my way out, she was so kind as to tell me that during the week, I didn't need to pay. Nice. Want more irony? How about name of their best known item: "The Garbage Salad." Now, I've eaten garbage salads that actually do taste like refuse, but Grumpy's rendition certainly isn't one of them. It's awesome, in fact. Great combo of flavors and textures. And, it's filling enough that it certainly stands alone as a meal. Had enough irony yet? No? Well then here's some more. I lived in South Florida for years, YET, (possibly) THE best Cuban Sandwich variation that I've eaten is made right here in T-Town! Grumpy's "The Babalu" has become so ingrained in my consciousness that I can't drive down South Huron without thinking of either Desi Arnez or Renato Sobral. The bun, in my opinion is actually better than the Cuban bread used in the original version, and the addition of mayo really seems to help! Throw in super fast service, hip atmosphere and pretty good prices, and we've got a winner here! Sandwich, Salad, Wrap sort of place with fantastic reviews... My friend and I yelped this place and it was not bad. It definitely wasn't an ultimate favorite for me because I ordered the Hawaiian Wrap which is ham, cheddar cheese, and pineapples. Wasn't a fan of the wrap because the pineapples weren't grilled...and I heart grilled pineapples. My friend LOVED her "Garbage Salad" though. The Poppyseed Dressing is two thumbs up and a lesser known fact is that they SELL said dressing in small ($4), medium ($6), and large ($8) sizes. I just happened to be passing through the area and this place had some great reviews and a high rating so I decided to give it a shot. The area is nice like a little downtown area. Parking is mainly on the street. There is a lot directly next door however, I think is residential. There is a sign in the lot that any violators would be towed. The place looks great on the inside, like place that could be a regular hang out spot. I just ordered a carry out seeing as I was just passing through. The service was friendly I got he pork-belly BLT. I love pork belly and have a high standard for how it's cooked. I did not like this sandwich at all. The pork belly was cold and tough like jerky, it was very hard to chew. I'm use to pork belly having a crispy crust and almost just melting in your mouth. I suppose it could have been an off day for the cook. The spicy mayo was great, the vegetables were good and tasted very fresh. The meal came with a bag of chips and the advacodo was extra. Because of the great reviews I would try again and just will stay clear of the pork belly. read more

Grumpy's on the go! I've eaten in Grumpy's and had a pleasant meal. My husband and I had our picture taken to go on the wall. I had the jackfruit "pulled pork" sandwich and he had something with a lot of meat in it. We both enjoyed our meal. Today, I had an opportunity to try Grumpy's on the go. I always love food truck day and was happy to see them. They have a great plant based menu and had the same great options on they're food truck! I had the plant based garbage salad which was delicious. At first I thought it was a little pricey, but when It was more than I could finish, I found the price point was just right AND they came to me, so I was able to save time which is valuable. I'm looking forward to trying the eggplant BLT on my next visit. read more

We decided to try something other than Pacos on the way back to Detroit and am super glad that we did. It was not easy to find with all the construction, but there is ample parking. It gets a good lunch trade, but it was raining and we had no problem getting a seat. My Babalu (Grumpy's take on a Cuban sandwich was excellent. The roast pork was full of flavor and I really enjoyed the lime and garlic mayo. The cole slaw was also good. The chicken deluxe was also spot on. This restaurant is also vegetarian friendly and next time I will try the Beyond Burger if it's still around. read more

In from Columbus and was so excited to go back to where my daughter and son-in-law had their rehearsal dinner 21 years ago. Ordered two vegan southwest salads and they came with cheese, and stale corn chips so had to reorder. The Nantucket salad with grilled chicken (very good) and fresh fruit. only had 6 blueberries and one medium strawberry sliced into 5 slivers. A huge salad, but mostly iceberg lettuce for $17.50! I love when I take out my trusty Yelp App and ask for help, and it leads me to an awesome establishment. Today was that day. I typed in healthy food nearby and Grumpy's pops up! A place that was actually on my radar, but sadly hadn't made the effort to get there. Today I made the effort. With my mother and daughter also in tow, we traveled only 1 mile to our lunch destination. We got there just in time to take advantage of the free afternoon parking. Yes! Once inside I quickly discovered that this was thee lunch spot. It was very busy. For a minute I thought we would have to wait, but seconds later we were taken to our table. The menu has a little bit of everything. There were tons of options for the health conscious such as gluten-free, meat alternatives, and plant-based menu items. I order the Homemade Sweet Potato Vegan Burger that came on a whole wheat bun with Avocado, Red Onion & Dijon mustard. Yummmmm! It came with a side of delicious Kale Chips! My mother had the Ivan's Veggie Burger. It was noted that it was the best veggie burger in Toledo. We both agreed that may be true. That veggie bread it was on was amazing! I wanted a loaf to take home! My daughter ordered the Tony's Turkey Burger, which also had Avocado, Red Onion & Dijon mustard on it. She ate every single morsel! Went back to Grumpy's today after not having been there for about 10 years. Took my husband (his first trip to Toledo!). This institution is as good as ever. You've gotta love the consistency! I had my old standby of egg salad. My hubby had the hamburger. Daughter had the lox, mom had the pork belly BLT and dad had the Sawbuck. As usual, all of the sandwiches were excellent. My husband eats burgers everywhere and he raved about this one. Of course we had to do dessert (why come to Grumpy's if you're not going to eat dessert??) and it was fabulous. Had the chocolate banana cream pie and the coconut cream. Both were great as usual. It's nice to see that some things never change! read more

I have come to the conclusion that Toledo is not exactly a foodie's paradise. With that being said, I wanted to visit at least one good restaurant during my short stay, so I came to Grumpy's on my last day in town. Ordered the full size garbage salad. Best way to describe this is a casear salad with 3 additional cheeses, grilled chicken, candied bacon, raisins and tomatoes. Of course it has poppyseed dressing, instead of cesear. Stopped here for lunch on a Thursday and the place was packed with the lunch crowd. We waited about 10 minutes, not bad. The parking lot was full, but if you can find a spot In street it is free from 11am-2pm. Great sandwiches and salads. It's a great place in downtown Toledo. I ordered the turkey club on bun. The burger was good, just could not grasp what all the hype is about. I was waiting for that wow moment, well it never came. My burger came with a handful of Ruffles potato chips and a pickle, more like what I would have at a picnic or birthday party. With so many good restaurants in Toledo, hard to justify $12 for the burger. After drink, tip and tax, not sure $20 for a burger is worth the value. And no, chewing 3 pieces of your favorite gum doesn't really make it go away. So try to cover all your daily conversations in the morning before your lunch break. Ordered a couple of salads for pick-up on a weekday lunch rush for myself and the coworkers who absolutely adore this place. Experience was super smooth- guy who took my order was overwhelmingly friendly even in the middle of the rush- and was very patient with me when I kept calling to add-on orders. They have ample parking in the a lot and in the street which is a plus. You also get a free cookie if you check-in on Yelp or Foursquare! Place looked really lively and hospitable. I love Grumpy's. I have been here a few times and each time it has been wonderful. The ambiance is homey, but not too small and tight. There is plenty of seating...and they have wifi with outlets behind just about every table so that you can plug in devices, just in case. The service is top notch and I have never been disappointed. At the same time, though, there isn't someone at your table in your face constantly asking if you want something. The menu has tons of selections...anything you can have a taste for, they probably have it. Even when they have been busy, they have moved quite smoothly and I have never had to wait long, or at all. I finally tried a cheeseburger last week. It was OUTSTANDING! The way the meat was seasoned was delicious and the bun was just right, soft, buttery, and not soggy. I have had a few of their deli sandwiches and salads before and all tasted perfectly fresh and were stacked perfectly. Their potato salad is good...almost like eating it at home with the redskin potatoes. They have soooo much on the menu that I look forward to visiting to try more. read more

Grumpy's is ideally located for breakfast before an afternoon Mud Hens game. I was in town with a friend and we stopped here for breakfast. The menu has a few offbeat items as well as your standards. I went with the Shorty (breakfast sandwich) and my friend had the French Toast with ham. My sandwich was good but I was jealous of that French Toast. Service was friendly and prompt. I meant to go back for those awesome looking cookies but didn't make it after the game. I plan to eventually make it back to Toledo as well as Grumpy's. But next time for lunch. read more

Wow, Wow, Wow! I rarely go downtown for lunch places, so a shop that closes at 2 p.m. is not somewhere I would typically stop for lunch. I did however stop in there last week as a coworker and I had to be in the area in the morning. We both had sandwiches, chips and a pickle. The food was great, it came out quickly and we were treated amazingly by our waitress despite it being standing room only in the place. She still checked in on us several times. She suggested we try the jalapeno mayo instead of the traditional. It was a FANTASTIC addition to the flavors. My only complaint, we both had water, and it was a bit warm, despite being full of ice. I'm not sure what it is, other than it likely came from a tap and wasn't refrigerated or out of a chilled machine. Not a huge deal, but just enough to not call it a perfect 5 star spot. Heading back from Detroit we decided to stop in Toledo for an early lunch on our way to Kentucky. On the map search popped Grumpys, and oh my, what a great leap of faith to stop instead of just grabbing some fast food off the expressway! So worth the added time to our travel. Their chicken soup is truly the best homemade soup I've ever had and my husband's chili was delicious as well. Then came the grilled chicken sandwich and we were in for a treat!
