Chicken breast, smothered
Jessica S.

We both really enjoyed our dinner here. It was our last sit-down meal in London before moving on to the next city. When we arrived, the dining room upstairs was warm and packed. The first employee we met said we could wait for a few minutes for a table near the door to clear out, or we could find a spot to eat downstairs, where it was less crowded. Down the stairs we went! The basement seating area is a lot cozier than the dining room upstairs, which was totally fine for us. It was quiet - only one other party was seated when we entered - and it was warm. They have a bar, and food is transported from the kitchen via dumbwaiter (something I find so charming about London restaurants!) For dinner, I went with the chicken breast (it came smothered in cheddar cheese, mushrooms, and asparagus), and my husband went with the Moroccan lamb tagine. We ordered a couple of pints to round out our meal. The food was very good. We didn't have to wait long for the dumbwaiter to ding, announcing the arrival of our meals. My plate didn't look like much - I mean really, you can't make a dish smothered in wine sauce and cheese look pretty - but the flavors were definitely there. The chicken was grilled separately, then topped with the mushrooms, white wine sauce, and asparagus, before the melted cheese was added. As a final touch, they torched the cheese to give it a bit more oompf, which absolutely added to the flavor profile. My husband was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his own meal. The lamb was served on a bed of couscous, with vegetables and a cool yogurt dip on the side. He managed to destroy the plate in record time, though at one point he did pull something that looked suspiciously like a human hair out of the plate. He managed to convince himself it wasn't a hair, though, and almost licked the plate clean. And because we weren't full enough, we decided to order dessert. Last night in London, have to make it special, right? They didn't have sticky toffee pudding on the menu, so we went with the lime cheesecake. It was tasty (and definitely the prettiest presentation of food that night). The lime was offset by a mango sauce, which helped balance the tartness. The only reason I've taken off a star is the fact that our waitress - who was responsible only for the downstairs area (all two parties) - wasn't very attentive. The party behind us kept having to call her over to ask for more water, more wine, status on their meals and to ask for the dessert menu. We weren't quite as vocal, but we did have to flag her down a few times throughout the night, as well. The last time I tried to get her attention, she was on her phone... Despite all that, the food was excellent and we left feeling full and fuzzy. Had it not been our last night in town, we definitely would have gone back for another meal.

Heavenly dessert!

Make a reservation! This place is cozy and popular, but for good reason. The Grumbles Filet was so good we came back for a second night! Crusted with spicy mustard and brown sugar, each of our steaks were perfectly prepared. They also had this amazing fruit parfait dessert, which can only be described as "magical." We came across Grumbles after a long work day and no one was committing to picking a spot. I read the good reviews and saw that the prices were reasonable and that it was nearby our hotel by Pimlico. We are happy to have found it!

Very inviting little place that oozes comfort food and warmth. After a warm welcome, I sat at a window table and was promptly served olives and bread - big doorstops of freshly baked loveliness. I ordered the avocado & prawn starter, fish pie and a glass of rose. The service was friendly and efficient and my enquiry about mussels in the pie handled quickly and courteously. The fish pie was light and devoid of all the cream and butter you might expect. The fish was the star with a solid supporting cast of smooth potato (complete with crispy top), dill and chives. The French guy at the next table was clearly relishing the escargot - quite the endorsement! For dessert I had the chocolate & brandy mousse. It looked huge, but miraculously it soon disappeared. I don't usually go for chocolate but this was worth making the exception. The bill came to £33 including a 12.5% service charge which is great value - anywhere, not just in London. A great experience made even more so as I was dining alone and hardly even noticed!

Been twice and will return. Food, service and wine are fantastic. I've enjoyed lamb twice. Their vegetables and sauces are yummy and nothing we've had disappointed. A Pimlico pleasure well worth exploring.

Open late! Food is good and exactly what I wanted. Nice, local diner feel with a very very nice staff. I got fish and chips. Don't judge me, but isn't that the best kind of late night eat after a couple of pints?

This place was nice, had good food, good service, and prices seem good for London (we spent £10-13 per person)

Having wine paired with our dishes was brilliant, making the restaurant extra special! This restaurant is in Mandarin Oriental's basement, but it has these red sexy loungey vibes. You could see colleagues having dinner, and some people enjoying a cute date night! My mom had french onion soup for her appetizer, which she thoroughly enjoyed. My dad and I shared the octopus, which we wanted extra charred. It was beautifully cooked, served + presented. Plus, it was a good piece (not something you can say about most places with their octopus lol) I think I could order the octopus for my entree and be content. But we didn't stop there I ordered the steak, my mom ordered a veggie burger and my dad ordered a regular burger - the dishes weren't crazy exquisite or over the top, but it was just good food. My mom did rave about the veggie burger though - I think it was a falafel pattie? smelled nice as well!

We tried a lot of dishes and honestly, there's not a single one I wouldn't order again! Here was our meal with descriptions: Drinks - Watermelon & cucumber gin & tonic - Old Fashioned Appetizers - Baguettes and butter (complimentary): fresh and airy start to the meal. - Small Charcuterie board: We really enjoyed the shredded duck and the jamon. The wheat bread accompanying the charcuterie was also delicious! Small pickles and dogs decorate the plate to balance the salty with sweet. - Lobster roll paired with Sunset white wine: So decadent and delicious! This isn't your standard lobster roll. The buttered roll and the lobster bits were the perfect balance of tasty and satisfying. Dinner - Loup de Mer: after so many appetizers, I was looking for a lighter entree. The sea bass was prepared so well, and layered over grains with marinated peach pieces. I loved the balance of sweet and savory, and would definitely order again. Pair with the Sunset white wine. - Steak Frites: Amazing! The fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy. The bearnaise sauce served alongside the steak complemented the dish so well, making each bite better than the last. Paired with a Merlot. Dessert: - Vanilla bean with berry cream birthday dessert: Way to make a girl feel special on her birthday! This dessert was so light and tasty, I loved the final touch Bar Boulud put on my perfect birthday dinner. - Vanilla Mille-Feuille: Puff Pastry filled with vanilla cream and topped with a lace of caramel sauce. YUM! So flaky, but we scooped up those extra pieces with the side of homemade vanilla ice cream, so no complaints here!

Intimate, yet not claustrophobic, Chabrot is the real deal when it comes to authentic French-but-not-in-France bistros. I went with my French father, who hails from Reims, and he too was pleased with our lunch experience. First thing that caught my eye - they have my favourite white wine: Picpoul de Pinet! For a starter, we both had the Soup of the Day, which was Gazpacho. Thick yet light and fresh, it tamed my hunger without leaving me too full for my main course. Papa had the Charcuterie Board, which had a small bowl filled to the brim with foie gras that was divine, & I had the cod avec des petit pois et des lardons. A perfect lunch dish, the filet of fish was light and airy while the lardons gave it a welcome heaviness. We finished with two espressos, which came with complimentary madeleines - yummmmm. Can't wait to come back here!

Photos and more here…read morehttp://hungryinlondon.com/2011/05/chabrot-bistro-damis-knightsbridge/ After having read formidable reviews about Chabrot in the Metro and the blog Cheese & Biscuit this restaurant was top on my list to try, particularly as I am always a bit at loss on where to go in Knightsbridge. I don't like to be ripped off, you see. In the end, I was not as taken with Chabrot Marina and Chris. The food was good, but it was by no means exceptional and it didn't leave any lasting impression. The main criticism I have though, is that I found it rather overpriced. Ok, we are talking Knightsbridge here, but the only fish main on the menu £29? To be fair, there were cheaper dishes to choose from, but I really wanted fish. £29 I may pay at a Michelin star place with amazing atmosphere and great reputation, not at something that calls itself bistro (that's the cheapskate in me, sorry) The atmosphere was positively remarked on by most reviews I read about this place. I assume most of the reviewers must have sat downstairs which did look nice upon entering. We were however led upstairs to an empty, drafty room and apart from the checked tablecloth, I didn't feel much of a pleasant French flair I have to say. Now there is one thing worth mentioning about Chabrot Bistro D'Amis. They do a Plat du Jour, I think from 6-7 pm and also for lunch. We got there at 7:30 and sadly missed it as it is very good value for money. The dish of the day, one glass of wine and a coffee for 17.50, this is such a bargain for Knightsbridge! I do have to come back for this. Back to the A La Carte menu. We started with the Broad Bean Salad with Fresh Ewe Cheese (7.50). I didn't know what ewe cheese is (let alone how to pronounce it!), so you might not either if you are not English. Let me enlighten you, an ewe is a female sheep #englishlesson. This was a lovely and clean dish which I rather enjoyed. Then the starter which I shouldn't order but can never resist: Foie Gras Terrine (12.50). The quality of the delicious foie gras spoke for itself and didn't need any flamboyant presentation. The mains were rather decent. As I didn't want to have meat and the fish, as I may have mentioned, was 29 pounds, I went for a pasta. Pasta in a French restaurant is not the dish to order, but I was quite happy with the result. The home made Pasta with Asparagus (12) was perfectly al dente and nicely seasoned. I would have liked a bit more asparagus though. The Grilled Baby Chicken with Lemon and Garlic (17.50) was succulent and well flavoured, simple and really good. But the presentation oh dear. I didn't like the cheese (9.50). I usually love cheese! And I love French cheese! All three cheeses left me absolutely cold, in fact the one on the left I found actively unpleasant. You might enjoy them though, I know that cheese tastes are highly subjective. As you might guess by now, I won't be hurrying back for the a la carte menu. I will try the plat du jour though and will sit downstairs in the nice part the next time. Should this change my opinion you shall be the first to know.

To an American, you would ask, why do things correctly? But it is perhaps the highest compliment, and I learned to appreciate that when I lived in Paris. English people know the value of doing things properly. French staff and clients? Beveled mirrors and touches of engraved glass? Short, non-flowery menu descriptions? Check check check. I think in a number of years when the floor gets more scuffed, and they cram the tables together more, it will feel downright parisien. I just had to get the duck confit, as I always do, and it was very good. You could see the rebellion showing through, however, as it was served on a bed of beans and sauce of pureed green herbs. To finish, the froid-chaud, or as we Americans call it, a hot-fudge sundae. All in all, a thoroughly satisfying meal. Gluten-free notes: Many French dishes are naturally gluten free! The whole thing of "all French sauces are full of flour" is utter rubbish, as I learned while living in Paris for several years. They were able to confirm which dishes were gluten free.

The service was incredible and it's evident that the wait staff here are at the top of their game and enjoying what they do. You'd think they had been open for years rather than just a few months. Clientele seemed to be mostly French, or at least they were able to speak French very well. This I have to say only added to the atmosphere, which is definitely formal enough to be a special occasion place but by no means stiff. We ordered a half bottle of the Gewürztraminer which was the second cheapest on the list, but the quality was very impressive. If that's anything to go by I suspect the rest of the wine list is very good indeed. We ate from the set lunch menu which is extremely reasonably priced and the standard of the food was enough to have us planning a visit in the near future for the full A la Carte experience. Can't wait! Great Service, Great Food, Great Wine. Go here as soon as you can before the secret gets out!
