Breathe in the ambiance. There is something comforting about these hardware stores... I wasn't planning on buying anything when I went in. Several employees asked if I needed help. I didn't at first. Then I opted for a new Stanley claw hammer (I can't find my current hammer) and a metal tool for breaking up and chipping ice from sidewalks (I'll be damned if I could find this style tool anywhere during the winter). As far as I can tell, this hardware store IS NOT affiliated with True Value - nothing at the store would indicate this and they are not listed on the True Value web site. They accept plastic here - although I believe they do not accept Discover. Nice folks running the place - friendly and helpful!

Everytime I've needed a tool or a harware item they've had it and at a better price. You get great personal service as well. The employees are clearly there just to collect a paycheck, and it's easy to see why--there's zero accountability. Management is completely checked out. The store manager is useless, and the so-called "managers" under them do absolutely nothing because no one is making them do their jobs. It's a free-for-all of laziness and incompetence. Policies? They don't matter here. Open bags of mulch, soil, and rock in the garden center are supposed to be sold at 50% off, yet no one enforces it. Cashiers don't care, supervisors look the other way, and management couldn't care less. It's a complete failure from the top down. This place is a shining example of what happens when leadership doesn't lead. Pathetic.

Kerri wasn't their and when I explained to the cashier the situation, she said she couldn't give me the discount and instead gave me a $5 coupon with an expiration date in two wo weeks and I had to spend another $25. First, what is the likelihood that I would need something else within the next two weeks and needed to spend another $25. As I said, Very disappointed. I have a potbelly pig and this is where I buy her bedding. I've also bought supplies for my bunny and various tools here over the years. G&G is a little out of the way for my day-to-day needs, but when I do stop here I feel like I'm supporting local business, and that feels good.

She placed me on hold for almost 5 min. and came back with "Yes" it is in stock. I told her I would be there to pick it up. Well-No Jonathan Green and the young lady didn't bother to go check. She just looked in the computer. Please train your staff to physically go check if an item is in stock before customers drive out. Especially, after a long hold time. When the time comes, a friendly staff member will likely be there to help you navigate the shelves and find it. We have come here on other occasions for paint and screws. True Value is conveniently located in a street with many well loved businesses in Dupont Circle. Maybe get dinner with a side of hardware store? There is a bus stop a couple blocks down and it's a 10 minute walk from the circle.

I saw 2 employees in the store, but they made no effort to ask me if i needed assistanc. The girl at the register was on her tablet. And the guy was on his phone, standing with a store branded shirt. Finally as I was getting ready to depart, the girl at the register asked: If I needed anything. I said no thank you and left. Not a good first impression. At least the big box stores, greet you and ask if you need anything when you come into the store. Perhaps they will get better with time.

Unfortunately, one smug employee ruined that experience for me, and I'll now be switching my allegiance to Ace. I purchased a small $6 shower accessory. Unfortunately I lost the receipt. The accessory was not what I needed, and I attempted to return it. The employee stated I cannot return without a receipt, even for a store credit (I was going to purchase products worth more than the value of what I was returning). I was disappointed at this response, but I shopped for what I needed anyway. I went to the front, and the employee was helping another customer in an aisle. After helping that customer, she proceeded to another customer in the aisle. Now, I understand one person having to triage, but at that point a simple acknowledgement of me would have been nice. It felt intentional, and it seemed as if the employee was taking satisfaction, acting somewhat smug as she told me she won't accept a return without a receipt. Not sure if this is just one rude employee, or the owner is really this strict about returns on $6 items that are clearly unused, but either way, I seriously doubt I'll be doing business here any more. If you had or have a similar experience, I also encourage you to drop these clowns. (Incidentally, when I purchased the item I would eventually return, I was not asked for my phone number (which they generally use to text receipts, as I'm part of their "customer club" or whatever. So there is actually another mess-up by a different employee that could have accommodated the companies own draconian return policy.) In short, I go to a neighborhood spot like this for the service. And when I'm treated this way, it defeats the purpose of avoiding much more convenient and likely cheaper options like Ace or Amazon. You are not really selling hardware - you should be trying to offer a superior customer experience--remember that and you will not lose customers like this
