This Groundworks location is one of my favorite things about Venice. It truly has that local indie coffeehouse vibe. I always see a familiar face there, the employees are sweet and patient, and the clientele is always friendly and eclectic. This is the only place I trust for a perfect cup of coffee or an expertly-made espresso drink, every single time. The coffee is never burnt or stale or watery. In proper hippie Venice spirit, you can get your espresso drink made with any non-dairy milk under the sun: soy, almond, hemp, rice, etc. Their food menu and baked goods selection blow all other coffeehouse food items out of the water. Gotta subtract a star for the *horrendous* parking lot with too few and too narrow spaces. Also, lines at peak times on weekday mornings can often stretch out the door, making it impossible to grab a quick cup of coffee before work. Understandably a lot of shops were closed today but I was pleasantly surprised to see this one opened. This shop was definitely welcoming and quaint, despite the shop being busy the workers were very patient and polite. I got their Chai Latte, it was good! Groundwork is a staple place in the sense that it provides quality drinks with enough options to explore but not too many that it's overwhelming. I always get their matcha latte iced with oat/cinnamon and it always tastes the same, very yummy! So no complaints on consistency but I do wish they added just a bit more matcha so it wasn't too milky. Their house milk is really unique and delicious! But it's not always consistent which is understandable since it's made in house. Nonetheless, although a bit overpriced, I do love this place and will continue to stop in for my usual from time to time. read more

RUDE RUDE RUDE! This location is so unfriendly, unwelcoming and unprofessional. I have been to other Groundworks in the LA area and have had great experiences but I will never visit this location again. I came with my sister and her service dog that she has had for a few years following a personal trauma. The dog wears a clearly marked vest, has a scannable ID, and is the most mellow dog. Not only did the person taking her order ask if it was a service dog but then insinuated that she was a fake service dog and informed her that dogs are not allowed. Being that we were getting coffee to go and not wanting to share the reasons she has a service dog in the first place with the whole place she ordered and waited outside. EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. We received our lattes and they were pretty much glorified warm milks. I think we were lucky to get half a shot in each. I also had to wait 20+ minutes to get a scone and a burrito because there is no organization to the food service. I have also never seen people move slower during the normal morning rush. Someone needs to give the staff here a lesson on customer service because it is severely lacking. read more

Among all the groundwork branches I like this one most. First for the location, still close to the beach but not in the most touristy areas, which means parking is easier to find in the nearby streets. Second the coffee is just great. I especially like the Vietnamese iced coffee, it's so rich, creamy and refreshing, and I didn't see other branches selling it. Third the wooden interior and the lighting make this place pretty chill. I couldn't remember if there was a window in the ceiling that let in natural sunlight from the top, but this place does not feel so modern and busy like other branches. Groundwork is not all hype, it is all real. The coffee is all too good, and the ambiance is way way better. I'm not sure if this just happens to be a good find, or if I've just sunk myself into a trap thinking that I was the cool before the cool. But Groundwork is the bees knees. All the hip Venice/LA vibes aside, Groundwork offers good coffee, plain and simple. It's just great coffee. The cold brew is strong and bold, but the flavor is almost chocolatey, rich, full and thoroughly satisfying. The depth of flavor in the coffee is really incredible. The ambiance of the shop is really great, I love that it's so cute, and fun looking. The shop is probably not the best place to study, but it's a great place for a little coffee date. read more

McLooooooovin!! Since I've seen Superbad more times than any grown up should confess, I'm not above admitting I love me some McLovin, so when I saw Groundworks McLovin Egg sandwich today while ordering my (absofuckinglutely perfect thankyouverymuch) iced latté with a little head and just the right balance of richness and cream, I knew it had to be mine. English muffin, free range egg, prosciutto, provolone and garlic aioli. It was f'in goooood. Only complaint... it got warmed up in something other than a toaster oven rendering my muffin chewy when I like my muffins soft and fluffy the way a muffin should be, but it was so tasty I was totally unfazed. Great vibe and location here on Rose in Venice, cool friendly dudes workin' the counter, awesome selection of coffee condiments (including simple syrup for those who like it iced when the mercury gets to climbin') and lots of cool things to look at and check out like the antique coffee and tea pots lining some very high shelves above. Squatters, be warned... there's no wi-fi, limited seating (save a coupla benches out front) and it's downright steamy in here on hot summer day. Get yo McLovin to-go. read more

Bitch's Brew....that's my drink! Haha, very appropriate! :) I have been feeling a little surly lately, but that's because I've been dealing with some stress lately. I had first tried Bitch's Brew at the SAMO Farmer's Market and I thought it was some damn good coffee. It's not acidic, nor does it taste burnt like Starbuck's coffee. Very smooth. I love this location; it feels like a country store and very local feel. It is an a eclectic section of Venice/SAMO boarder. Very interesting characters come in here, but they are very chill, artsy type. I even had a nice conversation with a regular (hi Andre!) and had a good discussion about iPhones. They have pastries and breakfast burritos, so it is a cool place to get a quick bite for breakfast. there are some small cafe tables outside and a community table inside. For the regular coffee, you get a cup and pump out some coffee. The other fancier beverages, you order at the counter. I'll definitely be back to try the other beverages....I wanna check out the Mexican Hot Chocolate next. They said they put a some cayenne in it, which is like how Chuao does it and I love their Mexican Hot Chocolate. read more

I live right around the corner from this location and come here at least three times a week. The coffee is amazing, service is friendly, and the breakfast is so tasty! I usually get the latte or dirty chai latte on cooler days and cold brew on warm days. I will say there is some variation to the lattes depending on who's making it- I'm always astounded with how good it is when the older guy makes it! I live around the corner from Groundworks and always love that this establishment marks my neighborhood. I see many familiar faces and friends on the benches in line, always feeling very at home every time I walk in UNTIL RECENTLY. These are the reasons I chose to not make coffee at home but get out, see friends and support local business. I had been away for a couple weeks and came back to a shock. Where did all the coffee go? I can no longer mix my Bitches Brew with the various others? I was lucky enough that it wasn't crowded at that moment but immediately knew omg now the lines are going to be horrible do I have to find a new place? I don't understand the changes? New Ownership, Management? My first thought was oh well I guess I will have to venture down the road to Flake or other establishments for my morning routine. This could be a temporary, which I can understand changing things up and trying out a new system. I just don't see it becoming more efficient regarding the lines and the atmosphere of a neighborhood place vs. Starbucks. I beg of you to bring back the old system, the familiar family like atmosphere we all love instead of another cold system of cattle wrangled up for coffee. I was going to get a cold brew, but the barista talked me into getting a Vanilla Latte w/hemp. It's SO good! A little weak on the coffee taste but so smooth & the vanilla is very subtle & not too sweet like other places make. You can tell this is a great quality place & I would definitely come back and try the cold brew & the bitches brew! Try it with hemp! When it comes to coffee shops (other than Blue Bottle) I typically don't give to much fuss. Give me my caffeine, inject it directly into my arm if you have to. But Groundwork is just...better. Everything has better taste, no bitter, even at the Farmers market it is great. I'm a bit fan of their Vietnamese iced coffee. Secret is in the brand of condensed milk they use. I think this location looks a lot better than the one in Hollywood. its a lot more decorated and just feels nicer, from the decor to the people! T he layout of the coffee shop is more of a self serve for pastries and coffee! There are self pumps for those and a pastry counter where sandwich bags and wax paper is available to pick up the baked goods. Pay and order other espresso based drinks at the counter with the register. on the side there's a section to just buy coffee beans as well! There's also a neat old fashioned fridge that actually works! with bottled beverages inside! A small three seater table and a communal table that seats about 8 on the inside. Outside there are two small benches and a small patio area on the side by the parking lot! This place has great coffee! a little expensive for coffee, but well worth it for the flavor! Staff is really nice and the baked goods are yummy! I shared a coffee cake muffin with the boyfriend! not too cakey and it had a nice crumble on top without being overly sweet!
