I genuinely enjoyed the food and drinks at Grotto Tea Lounge! The takoyaki has huge portions and it reminded me of my japan trips!

I was invited for the Yelp event here and I had a great time! We were offered the Salt and Pepper Chicken, Crispy Fried Calamari for snacks and Jelly Trio milk tea, Matcha Hokaido milk tea for drinks. The food was really delicious so we ordered the spicy Popcorn shrimp as well. However, I would not say it was spicy but seasoned instead. Also thank you for the complimentary popcorn! Service was great and really appreciated the care from the staff. Only 2 of them were working and it was getting busier and busier. Ambiance was very nice and I can see why students or anyone who needs a quiet place to work would come here. However, some people who came later killed the vibe by being very loud and inconsiderate of others. There was also a woman who was resting one of her legs on a chair with no shoe on as if she was at home was quite a sight. Sad to see why we can't have nice things sometimes.

    One of my fav!

This used to be called Green Grotto back in the days. New name, same vibes. Cosy wooden tables and chairs, grab a drink, some snacks and you can play board games or study all afternoon. They offer Taiwanese snacks and rice bowls along with bubble tea. Popcorn chicken and Taiwanese sausages are my favorite.

Longan Honey Iced Green Tea and Passionfruit Aloe Vera Drink

I used to go to Green Grotto a lot when I lived nearby. I'm so glad I was in the area because this place has such a cozy atmosphere. It's a great place to hangout with friends or even study/work. We ordered the Longan Honey Iced Green Tea (5/5), the Passion Fruit Aloe Vera Drink (5/5) and the Matcha Shaved Ice (5/5). They also gave out popcorn to snack on while we waited for our order. Both drinks were refreshing which were perfect to cool us down in the hot summer weather. The Matcha Shaved Ice was presented beautifully. The shaved ice itself was velvety smooth and creamy. The toppings to shaved ice ratio was well-balanced. We really enjoyed how this dessert wasn't overly sweet unlike other shaved ice we've had. The red bean and the vanilla ice cream were what added the layer of sweetness to this dish. The mochi QQ balls were so soft and had a perfect chewiness to them. The server we had was patient and helpful. She even put our drink in a to-go cup when we couldn't finish it. I would recommend going to this place for some drinks and snacks if ever you're in the area.

Three Cup Chicken ($14.99): it's alright - if you like half your bowl being ginger and garlic :)

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE 3.5 to 4 stars - it's a solid place to go for Taiwanese food - the downside for me is portion size: it's a little small, but the lower prices make up for it! === 2. FOOD Note: you get a small tin of lightly-salted popcorn when you place an order - tasty! Hokkaido Roasted Milk Tea ($7.29) with lychee jelly (+$1) If you like a roasted flavour, you'll like how this tea tastes - pretty decent! Three Cup Chicken Rice ($14.99) So if you're hungry, you may want to plan to order a dish plus appetizer, or perhaps two dishes. The portion size (rice, a side dish of thinly-sliced pickled vegetables, and entree) is a little on the small side. For this dish in particular, it was interesting to see how so much ginger and garlic are packed into the bowl: nearly half and the other half is dark meat chicken. Not sure I would want to order this again where nearly half the entree is ginger and garlic cloves. === 3. SERVICE You order with your phone, scanning a QR code on the table which launches a website to order food. Based on the speed of service and bill payment experience (at the counter) - it was alright. === 4. ENVIRONMENT As other Yelpers have mentioned - it's a neat place / lounge to hang out: the music, medium-lit environment makes it a cozy place to chat with friends or get work done on a laptop.I would probably keep my group to 8 or fewer people, but those with wheelchairs and baby strollers can find a place easily. Parking is plentiful in the shopping complex lot outside.

Great place to go to get some work done, quiet atmosphere with a variety of food and great customer service!

Was in the area and decided to order their special milk tea that day. Not much of a wait and got the order within five minutes. I got it for take out but to noticed there was plenty of space and tables. The bubble tea was made really well as the bobas tasted fresh. Servers were friendly as well. Would come back to order again and to hangout!

    Eggplant with minced pork

Had high hopes for this establishment and it was just ok. Got a weird bone bit in the salt and pepper chicken that threw me off. Eggplant was good and the bubble tea was standard. Service was slow and we were forced to place the order on our phones. Ambiance was nice but seating wasn't that comfortable for a lounge. Not sure I'd go again.

Came here for a quick bubble tea takeout. We noticed the Friday promo, large pearl milk tea for $5.88 and couldn't walk away from this. The milk tea was delicious, though not super fragrant/rich. The bobba was great though, perfect chewiness. Would recommend for the price. The cafe is also super cozy and cute for a nice hangout spot.

Came here for drinks and desserts to catch up with some friends. They had plently of seating and with an extensive menu, there were lots of choose from. Nothing particularly outstanding in terms of flavour - cakes and drinks were just okay. Service was friendly. Would come back if you're looking for a guaranteed space to just hang out with friends for a few hours.

    Breaded Calamari Rings

I came here last weekend. It was my second time coming here and I had a really great experience (both times). This time we ordered: - Breaded Calamari Rings - Cuttlefish Balls - Braised Beef Brisket w/ Rice - Curry Chicken Rice I really enjoyed the beef brisket - the sauce was very tasty and the beef was so tender. My bf liked the curry chicken although he said he would prefer it if it had a bit more salt. The stars for us were definitely the snack items though. We both loved the calamari rings - the breading was so yummy and very crispy and the cuttlefish balls were also very yummy. Aside from the food, the service was also really great. We also get a complimentary popcorn for free which was awesome! My favourite thing about this spot is the atmosphere - the design and ambiance create such a nice vibe that makes this spot a really great spot to hang out with friends or to enjoy by yourself to study or just chill in a cute cafe. Will definitely be coming back in the future!

Not sure why the reviews are so low, my friend and I visited tonight and everything was awesome! They start you off with free popcorn. Both of our drinks (Hokkaido oolong milk tea & grapefruit jasmine iced tea) were made perfectly and had very generous portions. However, the food surprised us the most by how good it was! I got the minced pork over dry soy noodle bowl and she got the minced pork and popcorn chicken combo meal. The food was delicious and the servings were so generous we were so stuffed and couldn't even finish our food. Dry noodle bowl tasted just like a home cooked meal. The popcorn chicken was so crunchy and stayed crunchy even after sitting for an hour. The flavors and atmosphere are so comforting. I went spent around $27 each for our two items. Seems like the perfect late night casual date spot or study spot as we noticed a lot of couples and students. Overall would highly recommend and will definitely be returning!

Love a good cafe where you can laugh, play games and chill with friends or do some work? This is right up your alley! I was here a month ago with my boyfriend and our friends to play card games. I used to go here in high school every now and then. It was so nice coming back and staying a little longer. The employees are so nice especially the one who served us. I ordered a regular strawberry slush with no sugar, coconut jelly and tapioca. It was sooo refreshing and needed on a hot day! I don't usually crave to have tapioca in my bubble tea but their tapioca is soft and well made. I really enjoyed my experience here. We stayed until 10 or 11pm which was great and we had a fun time. Definitely will be coming back here again when i'm around!

Tbh, I haven't seen the size of their famous, large fried chicken, but it does seem a bit pricey upon just a glance at the menu. It is $12 for a piece of schnitzel essentially. Drinks were kinda on the pricey side at $5.50/soda mixed with some kinda fruit juice. I guess this is the going rate now! So the Popcorn Chicken seemed to be the best value to try out Hot Star. Apparently, all food is fried-to-order, so there is a bit of a wait. Interior is brightly lit, clean, and new. The Mojito was good, but very simple. Too bad this place doesn't have beer! There was a dry spice on the Popcorn Chicken that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but I didn't love it. It was good, but I almost wished that I had gone for the boring regular. It was a meal for me, but for anyone who is a big eater, it would be a snack. All the pieces were in a small paper bag. I'd definitely check this place out again as their fried chicken is juicy!

I came here on a weekday, there was no line, hardly anyone on the second floor. I looked at their menu (lots of options) and finally got the attention of the worker inside and pointed to the picture of what I wanted. There was a bit of back and forth with the worker, she kept waving me to look at the menu to tell her what I wanted, but I was clearly pointing to the photo of what I wanted. Service was a bit rude, she wasn't very friendly, nor did she try to understand what I wanted. I didn't think language barrier would be an issue if I was clearly pointing to the photo of what I wanted in my sticky rice. I will say that the sticky rice was very delicious and well balanced. It was VERY greasing on the exterior of their packaging which was saran wrap. The food made it a better rating, but I can't shake off the rude customer service. Questionable if I will be back though.
