Well, I am super satisfied after a great meal today. Large cheese pizza for the table plus the kids meatball and spaghetti. Omg the marinara on the spaghetti- I loved it with the chunks of tomatoes. Legit ate it with a fork, my little girl ate it up as well. The pizza was so on point. Crispy, cheesy and cooked to perfection. Normally water is my choice of drink, but the waiter rattled off birch beer. I went for it! Service was great, the waiter even engaged with my children. I can't wait to return. I bet as the night goes on it gets busy. We dined at lunch. I would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the sticky floor and some booths that had ripped seats. read more

Truly the most upsetting piece of pizza for the price of $3.75. The pizza tasted adequate at best, and was very very small. Went to meet family for lunch. Worst place ever to go. Service was awful the waitress took forever to get our order forgot half of our drinks. The waitress looked like she was on something. My brother-in-law ordered a beer and there was ZYN in his beer. The waitress came back and said sorry guess someone's ZYN fell out of their mouth. Never took the drink off his bill. Got the check and had to ask to take it off his bill. Went to go change my daughter in the bathroom and had to catch her because as soon as I put her on the changing table and she almost fell off because it was broken. There was no do not use sign. Grottos is my all-time favorite pizza chain, so I am biased in that regard, but this location is consistently good and ready on time for take out orders. If you're ordering for a big game like the Super Bowl, of course you need to plan ahead at least a few days in advance, but for everyday orders everything is typically ready to pick up in 20-30 minutes. I've never been kept waiting and the order has always been right the first time. The pizza and bolis are always hot and delicious when we get them home. I don't think I've ever eaten inside the restaurant, which I think of more as a bar for the local college kids and sports fans. It definitely can get loud and rowdy, but can be a fun place to hang out if you're looking to get a few cheap drinks. I'll stick to take out for meals. Pro tip: If you're out late when the bars are closing, all remaining pizzas are sold at the end of the night for a steep discount. More than once when out with college friends I've enjoyed a half off pizza on the lawn, which really hits the spot after a few drinks. read more

Terrible experience this evening. My family of 6 sat outside with their dog. They ordered pizza and cokes and ordered a water for me. Having a special diet, I walked to Roots Kitchen and back. Sat down with my family. Was told by staff that I could not eat my Roots food nor could I bring my Roots bag in to their establishment. I have done this on numerous occasions with approval by their staff. I explained this and the fact that my family ordered pizza and cokes. However I put my food away. But it still wasnt satisfactory. They were very rude and unprofessional. We asked for our check so we could leave. They brought the pizza out and our check. We paid and walked out with our plastic cups with our paid cokes and i had my water. As we were leaving a staff member chased us outthe door telling us we were not allowed to take our drinks. We told them we paid for them but he said that we were not allowed to take to-go cups outside and grabbed my husbands coke out of his hand then grabbed my granddaughters coke out of her hand. When he came to take my water, it slipped from my hands and fell. The staff member then called us mf'ers. My husband went back inside and asked for a coke to go in a coke bottle. They told him to leave and not come back. We paid for our sodas and they robbed us of them. It was a bad experience we will never forget. And we will never go back. read more

My roommates and I were making a trip up north for a couple of days and stayed in Delaware with family friends. This place was a nice welcome to a new state! It's a bar and a restaurant, so they card you at the door. Kids are still welcome until a certain time, though. The pizza was delicious and not a terrible price for how much you got. My friends made fun of me for putting broccoli on my pizza but there is just something about veggie pizza that convinces my brain I'm ~almost~ eating something healthy. Came here a few times on Saturday night and once for a soccer game during the World Cup 2018. At night it's a pretty awesome spot for drinking and hanging out. Very cheap and pretty good drinks! Haven't tried the food there and don't plan on it. Don't have high expectations. Bartenders and bouncers are not my favorite, though. When I came for the World Cup game, I asked him to put on the game 5 minutes before (for the anthems etc) and he rudely said there's plenty of time left. He switched the channel a minute before the kick off, totally killed the pregame hype. Another time I forgot my ID for the happy hour and the bouncer kept smelling my cup when I wanted to refill it with water. He kept watching me the entire time. Very rude and disrespectful. read more

The DoorDash delivery was flawless and professional. Oh boy, where do I start with this pizza, and I guess I better tell the truth? Crust on this pizza taste like a frozen grocery store pizza, and the toppings were very light and not many! The toppings were pepperoni, ham, onions and mushrooms. Most 16 inch pies with four toppings are fairly heavy when you hold them? So I bite into this pizza and the crust taste like a toasted pita bread or maybe a toasted piece of dry white toast, and I start eating the pizza , which is very thin for a 4 topping pizza? With each bite of this pizza it has very little flavor that jumps out or stands out, and it has barely any red sauce on it. I don't think I got a bad pizza because I think this is the way they make all their pizzas, and my feeling is that grotto is just another franchise that kicks out passion less and cookie cutter pizza pies? If you want love in your food, and you want somebody making it by hand with a passion, and you want really fresh ingredients, And you want it to look good when you open the box, And want it to taste" as good as it looks , if not better, then please DO NOT- get pizza from grotto ever! Grottos gets five stars, not because of their food but because Grottos is a lifestyle. If it's a beautiful, sunny day -"let's go to Grottos", if it's a snow day - go to Grottos" if it's a 21st birthday- you better go to Grottos, cross your fingers you aren't too drunk and turned away, and then brace yourself for a blow job shot. If it's a Saturday - you better get yourself to Grottos before they reach max capacity and it's one in one out. I have made so many memories in Grottos and blacked out far too many times as well. This is the place to be. The bathrooms are disgusting, your shoes will stick to the floor, the ground is covered in popcorn, and stacked plastic cups decorate all the tables. Grottos is heaven to any University of Delaware senior. There are so many things you can and must do while at Grottos. Slater races- if you don't know what an AC slater is then you don't even go here. Play a quick round of credit card roulette and pray you don't loose!! Good thing they only cost $2 a piece. I bet you'll never beat Cara Barbato. Play the duck game- Collect as many Grottos ducks as possible and let them float in your beer while you drink it- cause that's not unsanitary or anything. It's not frowned upon to ask the bartender for quarters, after a few times he'll just know. (Candice and Julia) I'd you're like my friend Sarah, live out your dream of being a DJ by cashing in all your $1 bills and playing songs like "My Heart Will Go On" on the juke box machine. Once out of ones, go around asking random drunk students for more $1 bills, they'll likely give you them. Someone like my friend Marilyn may even break out in dance to "Love On Top". If you're lucky enough to get a table on the outside "patio" you might as well just stay there the entire day. That's prime realty. Make sure you play loose leaf out there. Grottos parking lot is even a famous landmark, if you haven't heard of the dumpster slut then you should do some quick research. Maybe even eat a slice of pizza (always delicious) and definitely fill up a basket of free popcorn. It's so salty that you'll be forced to continue to quench your thirst all day with endless "spring waters" and big coors. If you made it through that entire review than I'm impressed. Grotto's is a DE staple for pizza - usually when you're driving back from the beach. The Main St location is a nice treat, especially when you're missing summer. These days, it's looking sad. Our server seemed preoccupied even though she only had 2 tables and she didn't look like she'd showered recently. She kept touching her hair. She checked on us in passing and then would disappear for long periods of time. The cook or chef brought us our food. The bathroom had flies - drain or moth flies and the dining room had fruit flies. One stall door is missing, another is hanging by a hinge, the only toilet paper to be found is on the floor, and most of it appears to have already been used, there is pee EVERYWHERE. I thought maybe the ADA accessible bathroom would be better (it has a full door, after all), but nope, just as bad. So much pee on the seat. SO MUCH PEE. I just don't understand... How can an establishment that actually has a sit-down restaurant component get away with this kind of nastiness? Grottos-- if you want to have a nice bathroom, keep it nice. People will respect it if you respect it. Where are the doors?? Were women just angrily kicking down the doors so frequently that you were like, "screw it, they can just go doorless!"? Ladies-- What the heck are you doing in there?? You're not animals! It's not that hard NOT to pee on the seat (or floor, or I'm sure, the sink). The best bar on campus! The sports den is the place to be any day of the week. Tuesdays are my favorite, because shots are only $2! What a steal! They have an app to play whatever song you want in the bar, and you can guarantee that you'll see at least five people you know at any hour of the day, even if you don't want to. Nicholas Fader, Xiao Fu, and Schmitty are the best bartenders in the game and will whip you up an LIT in record time. I even do my homework here! Definitely a must-see when visiting Newark. I highly recommend the Long Island Iced Teas and Gatorade shots. read more

I always said that if they combine the dancefloor of Kildare's with the bar and music of Grotto's, they'd have one heck of a place on Main Street. But alas, they're separate places, so: This was another one of my regular spots in Newark because you always see someone you know there. Good prices for drinks--I'm a fan of the specials they have. Sometimes the Long Islands can be weak, even the doubles, but what do you expect for $4? Also, it can get crowded and hard to move around, and the bathrooms are small and kinda gross (at night). I don't see a lot of approval on Yelp about Grotto's pizza, but I happen to love it. It's one of the interesting tastes of Delaware, if you will. What can I say, I like sweeter sauce and slightly doughy crust. It's all a matter of preference. The bruschetta gets a "two-thumbs-up," too. If you reserve the back area for a party/event, it will most likely run smoothly. The food was available and warm, beverages were available and cold, no issues with the service for a large party. Came here at night time with a couple of friends. Most people were at the bar area but we were at the tables going to order some pizzas. I know theres a line of kids waiting to come in and many people inside the bar area itself but the tables were completley a mess. Trash all over a good majority of the tables. I feel bad for the workers with what they have to deal with. Other then that it's some good pizza. Grottos has a iconic taste, also got some cheese fries those were pretty good as well. If I were to come here again I would get just take out. Even then you cant expect to much service wise coming to a place like this but the food is still pretty good though. Curbside Pickup Fail!!! We stopped by Grottos tonight with few other places still open to order a medium spinach pie. The counter girl graciously agreed to bring it out to our vehicle parked right in front when ready. Naturally I included a tip for the extra service with payment. Curbside pickup is an important feature in these days of Covid. No need to expose yourself waiting inside with the college student crowd. Main St. Newark also has the world's most aggressive parking meter maids. Even leaving your car unattended for a minute to pickup a pizza can easily result in a ticket. 30 minutes later no pizza was brought out. I go in and it's sitting on their shelf cooling off. The box is clearly marked C for curbside pickup. No apology. They just don't give a crap about my business. The pizza was tasty but very tiny and hardly worth the $15 + tip or the aggravation. Perhaps this is a fun place for drunk college kids to hang out. If you are an adult looking for late night take out, look elsewhere. read more

Stopped by for a drink on Friday afternoon to celebrate my friend defending her masters thesis! I like that they offer free popcorn and that the drinks prices are so cheap! I had a rather large and strong vodka and club soda drink for $5. They have this and other good drink specials like $5 shots all the time. The happy hour deal for anything else is just 75 cents off . That's a boring deal. But I give three stars because of how rude and obnoxious the bouncer was. My friend forgot her id and after we asked him what options we had (obviously none) she said "fine I'll just get water" and he says "I am not your server." Later she goes to the bar to get her water and he runs up and yells at her for being at the bar and then went and got the water for her. :/ The second time she went for water, he smelled the cup. He was so rude. He kept staring at our table and really ruined the fun. He also checked my other friends ID twice. We are all 24 years old. Grotto has been a staple for many years, but it now only survives on its past reputation and nostalgic feeling some get when remembering the great food they once did but no longer have. I think it may be time for the owners to give Gordon Ramsey a call. Now down to business. The food at Grotto has not only gone down the hill, its become a mountain slide of poor quality, poor service and cheap ingredients. When you look at the pizza they now serve, it simply looks gross. It doesn't get much better in the taste department, a below average rating comes to mind. You can clearly see, taste and feel the lack of quality that now exists at Grotto. It reminds me of the superstar ball player who signs a huge contract and then just goes belly up out of laziness since they have their paycheck all sewn up. Well, it's time to give Grotto their unconditional release and move on to a pizzeria that knows what Grotto once did, exceptional quality and service is what keeps customers coming back. read more
