The place had many fun touches like croched embellishments on the chairs, homemade wallets for sale and a formidable looking food and salad menu that we may try one day. Only 1 vegan option that I saw; a curry tofu sandwich of some kind. Lots of pastries too. They have outdoor seating as well. We will go back. read more

This place is legit. We came in from the city to check out what our sister state had to offer. This place has a great coffee house feel, Metropolis coffee, interesting decor and specialty drinks. We tried lattes, a cortado, the current pour over on offer, and one of their tea infused drinks called The Queen of Thornes that was also very tasty. On the food side we tried all of the cookies, the tea snickerdoodle is something I'm still thinking about. Delicious. read more

My husband I used to live in NWI and saying we were here 3 times a week is an understatement. Some of my favorites were: -Another Princess In A Castle (sandwich special) -Eggplant Wizard (sandwich) -Curry Tofu (sandwich) -Pumpkin Queen (seasonal Pumpkin Chai Latte) -Vanilla Ice Latte -Chai Tea -Fruit Teas -Pour overs I love the alternative atmosphere, music, homemade goodies, staff is great, and (of course) drinks and food. The only thing I ever got there that I didn't like was the Cantur. It was a little too sweet for my liking. They have plenty of activities going on there such as Socrates Cafe, art groups, knitting groups, etc. My husband and I miss this gem immensely. By far the best coffee shop I've been to in NW Indiana. Walking in reminded me of all the great independent coffee shops back home in the Pacific Northwest. Big comfy couch, yarn-bombed tables and chairs. The food here is excellent. My favorite thing by far is their chicken salad sandwich (nice and crisp, with cranberries!), but the bleu cheese beef bomb is a close second. I'm not a huge fan of the coffee, though. The roast is just way darker than I like, so to me it tastes a little burned. That said, they do make a good latte. Better than anywhere else around. read more

Accidentally found this place. It was a nice surprise. I had the chicken sammich which was delicious. It was warm and it had a lot of chicken. I also had a black tea the guy at the register recommended and it was so good! I bought a couple of chocolate chip cookies, a chocolate chip scone and a maple syrup scone which were so good my whole family enjoyed! Definitely will be back. My only one complaint is the prices. The tea especially was 2.20 for about 8 oz. (even though it says 12 on the menu). read more

We found this place while at a wedding in Merrillville and needed breakfast. Don't let my review rating deter you from trying it but if you expect a full service venue - this is not where to go. The establishment was quaint and eclectic. The coffee great. The menu board featured about a dozen options and you order at the counter. They were out of a couple things and I felt that it would have been in their best interest to erase those choices from the chalkboard rather than leave them and have you excited while you stand in line for 10 min (because bicyclists seem to frequent this place since it's apparently near a bike route) only to be dashed at the counter. And any special coffee requests take quite some time but the coffee and food we did get were good. read more

The way they trap the bubbles in the latte is an art, it give a richness, a full body flavor if you will, till the last sip and really must be experienced. Great coffeehouse decor, friendly staff, and best of all great food and a cup. Alright, full disclosure (because I am an ethical and virtuous human being): I'm really good friends with the people who own this shop. I've known them for years, have a "matching" tattoo with one of them and overall think they are rad. Now that we've got that out of the way, I can say without a doubt that Grindhouse is the best coffee shop in Griffith, and possibly in Northwest Indiana. As someone who grew up in NWI and then moved away, I can safely say that Grindhouse is what the area has been missing. A shop that uses fine craft coffee (Metropolis), serves affordable - yet delectable - food (seriously, the pulled pork was awesome. And what other coffee shop has pulled pork? I mean, really.) I went with three others, and the general consensus was that Grindhouse is fantastic. For $7, the sandwiches were fresh, filling and scrumptious. The coffee drinks were top notch, but I'd expect nothing less knowing the people running it. While I didn't try one of their baked goods, I know that the bakers are pretty good at what they do as well. So, if you've got a sweet tooth, I'm sure they'll have something to delight you with. If I could give this place ten stars I would. This was my first time here and I must say what a GREAT place. I don't know why I waited so long to try this cute little gem in downtown Griffith. I had the Dornish Mulled Apple Cider and the Crouque Grindhouse sandwich and they both were DELISH!!! My niece had the Pumpkin King Latte with the Pumpkin Scone with a Cinnamon glaze and it was beyond wonderful. This is my new favorite place. I love the Grindhouse! But today I took my son after school. We shared a chicken sammich. He got a smoothie and a cookie. I got a pumpkin Queen and and dessert also. My son is 5, so of course he had to go to the bathroom more than once. We we came back the second time, all of our food was gone!!!!! I spent over $20 with tip. Great place! Hubby and I decided to stop in on a Sunday for some brunch before running errands, we'd heard good things but had never been here before. Hubby ordered a coffee and sandwich and I had a peppermint cocoa and a scone. We were greeted warmly as we entered the warm, cute coffee shop and the staff was super kind and helpful as we placed our order. We settled down at a table as we waited for our food and drinks to be delivered to our table. I loved the atmosphere, people chatting, studying or reading - it's very much the classic independent coffee shop. Just as we were getting comfy, our food and drinks were delivered to the table, the drinks are great. Good quality, generous size but the food really blew me away, the sandwich my husband ordered looked amazing! It was fresh, gourmet and enticing, I stole a couple bites and it was fantastic! I'm not a sandwich person but I'd totally order that next time and leave happy! My scone was freshly baked, flakey and filling with perfect bursts of chocolate chips, not too sweet not too savory - just right. The (Nearly) One Year Review. It is fairly simple to say but I'd rather go into fine detail of why Grindhouse is without a doubt the bee's knees (his legs and his arms). Grindhouse has that feel, you know the one, no not that one sicko, the feeling you get when you know you will finally see family that you haven't gotten to see in years, that fresh blankets out of the dryer comfort feel. Grindhouse should be called GrindHome because no matter what you will always feel welcomed there. So what sets them apart? Everything, the tea is always amazing, their coffee drinks are stellar (no up charge for soy! - F U StarBucks). They do real legitimate specials usually a monthly sandwich special as well as at least one drink special. It's Doc Chicken Ya'll! --- The best sandwich special to date (in my opinion) Barbecued Chicken with cheddar cheese, pickled vegetables (onions and carrots), bacon (the duct tape of food! -- Meat Candy) and jalapeños, trust me this sandwich had KAPOW! Kick right to the depths of your soul! Back to the regular menu items, "Well is there anything that isn't good on their menu?" um let me answer by saying this....NO! It is a brilliant menu that has great written all over from the Blue Cheese Beef Bomb to the Turkey Dolo to the Curry-age or how about a Chicken Sammich --- Yeah, spelled like that because the owners rule! What I'm babbling about is there isn't a place I'd rather spend my hard earned money, yeah maybe McD's is faster but why eat dog doo doo when I could have a Scooby Snack for just a tiny bit more? My point exactly, in the near year the Grindhouse has been open they have constantly been way beyond satisfaction and expectation, my hope is that they will expand beyond their current four walls and get a larger location or two maybe even a shop with a drive thru window, that would be the ultimate! OH MY GLOB! I forgot to talk about the pastries.............Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie, Potato Chip Chocolate Chip Cookie (HEAVENLY!) Chocolate Chip Cookie?(Best in the World) Bananimal Banana Bread (Off the chain baby!) Cake Pop's?! (To Die For!) I literally could ramble for days about why this place is hands down the best establishment in NWI but "Ain't Nobody Got Time for Dat" so hurry your butts to the Grindhouse order a "Cold Pop" and a sandwich, maybe when you are done get a Coffee Special like the #Hativersary (Hate Iversary -- not HAT) but don't drink it too fast or your mouth will be saying "Oh Lord Jesus It's a Fire!" All joking aside this place is more than a coffee shop because you can feel the honesty and love in everything they do, the staff is respectful and friendly (with some pretty rad tattoos), and you always leave the Grindhouse with a smile on your face. I have been to this establishment twice, the first time I had a tea latte and a pulled pork sandwich both were amazing! The staff was helpful and answered my questions. It was so good that before I left it got a cold brew coffee as well, mind you I am not a coffee drinker. The second time was different I was not greeted as I placed my order (a cold brew coffee with soy milk and vanilla flavor) I got to coffee when the staff member left and came back with iced coffee, when I mentioned I wanted soy milk he gave me a look and as I was going to ask for flavoring the guy left again.. had to debate asking for vanilla flavor, as I am waiting in line the customer behind me is ordering can't help but overhear how helpful he is with him and how he waits for his whole order before actually making it. I had to wait for two more customers so I could get my drink right. I have worked customer service for a long time and there was no apology, and not even a smile, sadly I will not be coming back I was made aware that I am a minority therefore this treatment is usual I was just not expecting it while getting coffee. read more

This wonderful Seattle coffeehouse. Wait, what, it's in Griffith??? Wow this place is wonderful. Finally an alternative to Starbucks in NWI. My wife and I stopped by this place for a pick me up in the afternoon. It is quaint and cozy but don't let that fool you they know their coffee. You are greeted at the door by a wall menu packed with some great drinks and dishes. I had a pour over and my wife had a cafe au lait. They were both wonderful. 3 stars because they have great food (when they get it right) and delicious pastries. For me though, to go here means to take the good with the not so good. Not sure why but I can't seem to receive a Chorizo-saur burrito without onions to save my life. No one ever seems to read that part of my order. Today was no exception. I called in my order. 20+ minutes later, I was still waiting only to find that my food was done yet just put to the side. Accidents happen, I get it. But there is always something quite not right about Grindhouse despite their good products. Their customer service is just ok. You may get a "hello" or "good morning" or you may not. You may walk up to the counter with no one there yet still receive a greeting from the owner making drinks off to the side....or you may not. Or, someone will be at the counter busy with something else and they will still give you a quick acknowledgement while you wait...or you may not. I come from the time when you were taught by management to greet every single customer with a smile, even if it's just to say " someone will be right with you." They have good stuff. But after my occasional visits I always ask myself why I go back when my order is usually wrong and customer service is not so inviting. read more

My absolute favorite cafe! I am a regular here, and try new things all the time, but I STILL haven't even come close to trying every drink they have to offer here. All I can say is that EVERYTHING is good. The only downside is that during peak hours, parking is hard to come by. It's a very laid back, hipster-y place, but at the same time you see business executives and even families coming here for drinks. They make very creative drinks and always have a new special drink to try. Some of my past favorites are the Cinnamon Girl and the Bacon Whiskey Latte. Who thinks of that?! Only Grindhouse. Try their mocha frappe for a good blended coffee drink. Oh, and their tea selection is spectacular. This place never disappoints! read more
