A slow morning walk before my dental appointment led me to one of my favorite little treats. I arrived shortly after opening, but the Ruby sandwich was already sold out, so I tried the Sammy on a croissant (without cheese) with the Beehive bacon -- and wow, delicious! I also tried the blueberry basil lemonade (I usually go for the prickly pear), and it was such a refreshing surprise. The flavors were so good together! Grindcore is one of those places I appreciate because it feels like a special stop when I'm able to occasionally treat myself. The food is amazing, but the staff makes the experience even better. Great options for a vegan cafe & bakery, especially for lunch. The Greenwich is by far my favorite sandwich, especially with the house made hummus used, but the other sandwiches and pastries are tasty as well. My only negative is the "bacon" used on sandwiches, which tastes more like a seasoned, limp deli meat than a crisp, vegan bacon alternative. Otherwise though, good coffee and good food! read more

I visited this place back in early August on my trip to see a concert but had time before so I decided to check Grindcore House. I am not going to lie, the name led me to believe I'd be hearing grindcore music upon entering in but apparently it was quite the opposite? It was extremely hot outside so I only opted to go for what I knew best; ordering something with Matcha because I truly have a Matcha latte problem. I ended up getting the Strawberry Matcha Latte which was the perfect drink to beat the heat with. The staff was friendly and even mentioned that their food was also vegan and honestly it's a plus that it accommodates for the people that have allergens + is sensitive. There's a few seats up at the front, though there are tables in the back. If you were to walk around the entire cafe, there's lots of music related posters, even checking out the bathroom is just cool too! I like this place! I am happy that my visit here was memorable. Although my time in Philly was short, I hope to make a comeback trip to try more of the other drinks/food! read more

They always do vegan food so well here. Monte Cristo was reasonably flavorfully savory. Even though I could tell it wasn't a traditional monte Cristo, I still loved it all the same. It surprises me that this place couldn't keep its second location it is so good. It seems to be a reflection of the respective neighborhood and what people have to spend. I do feel Grindcore is reasonably priced for what you get. I am not vegan but I am a big fan. I am asking myself sometimes if this is really vegan. It's just good food and I wish they could be open longer. I love how they have random night market nights but I always never can make the ones I notice. Check their IG for special food nights, events, and food specials which I tend to go for. My fave so far is when they had a roast beef sandwich and maybe a tie between a banana Creme Brulee(?) latte and cardamom rose latte. Maybe something s-more like with a strong flamey flavor even though I am not usually so campy like that. I didn't know they had a nice seating area in the back. I don't take 5 stars lightly, but this place left me with a (grind)CORE memory. I didn't see the sign outside that said "All Vegan" and from the food you wouldn't even be able to tell it was! I got a latte here with non-dairy milk (of course) which didn't cost extra (in this economy??) which was really good. I got the basic sandwich which was tofu on a Philadelphia roll. I'm not sure what sauce or cheese or seasoning they use, but it was amazing! Seriously may call them for the recipe. Everything was super reasonably priced (especially for it being vegan). There are a few high chairs at the front, but wouldn't bring a laptop or sit-down work. They have a bathroom in the back which was small, but clean. The baristas were really nice and very hip. Second time here because I could not stop thinking about their biscuit. It is difficult to find a good vegan biscuit and they do savory and sweet so well. We got a breakfast sandwich and it was one of the best vegan or non vegan ones. The blueberry coffee cake was okay, wish it had more blueberry flavor, but was from another vendor. Service is all counter so you order from their menu and then come up to grab it once they call you. The employees are all nice and you saw them cleaning and helping if you needed it. My friend went and informed the worker about the hair in it, and we were brushed off with no form of reimbursement or apology. We were told "there is nothing we can do." My sister, boyfriend and I made a pit stop at Grindcore House after having breakfast at The Dutch. It's been my sister's favorite coffee shop while she's been out in Philly, so I took her word for it. Due to the pandemic, all the ordering and paying are done online. Pretty simple and straightforward. Many of the customers pre-ordered, but we easily placed our order on the spot. The turnaround time for drinks to be made was quick. I'm all about the custom coffee drinks and wanted to try something unique to the place. The Swamp Thing totally caught my eye. The drink was an iced Americano with green mint syrup and soy creamer, so there's no way I could miss the bright minty green layer. Over time the top coffee layer mixes in with the mint syrup, which makes the top layer legitimately appear to be this murky green color. It may not sound appealing, but it tasted great. It wasn't overly sweet and had the right touch of mint that was subtle. read more

So, the other day, I stopped by the coffeeshop again and had a biscuit breakfast sandwich. It's call a Mc G. I didn't bother to check the type of bread and was slightly disappointed when I saw it was a biscuit. Entirely my fault. I own it. Should have checked. Anyway, I let the sandwich sit for a bit while I did some work. After awhile, I thought I'd better eat it before it got cold. There's no telling what a vegan biscuit would taste like when cold. I didn't want to find out. Okay, I picked it up and it was still nice and warm. On my second bite, some of the biscuit crumbled a bit. I mean it crumbled in the same manner a really good non vegan biscuit would. I picked up the piece from my pate (not the floor or anything) and ate it. It might have been one of the best biscuits I've had. I never asked, but I think there was some kind of butter on the biscuit as well. It was good. In fact, I could have just eaten the biscuit. But I felt a little guilty afterword. You know the kind of guilt you feel when you've eaten something really good and rich and then wonder how many calories you bought in for. Later, I went to the counter to ask if the biscuit had indeed been vegan. I was kindly informed that everything is vegan. Okay, count me educated. I had another biscuit sandwich earlier today. Having only been to Philadelphia a few times, Grindcore House has been a staple to our visits. We make it a point to get breakfast (and some treats) at least twice every visit. It can be busy at times, but the food/drinks always come out quicker than expected. I also feel like I'm getting a touch of history with their fantastic black and white photograph from old hardcore shows. This is a wonderful find in this part of the town. We were at target when we started feeling the hunger pangs and coffee craving. Quick yelp search showed us this place not too far away. For food, it's completely vegan. We ordered the klopotkin with tofurkey and it was quite nice. For coffee, they have plenty non dairy options for the milk. I ordered the chai tea latte and husband ordered the mocha latte, both with macadamia milk. His drink was a lot better than mine. They have plenty of dessert options as well, but I didn't try any. They have plenty of seating in the back. They have books, including books for children that you can borrow and read while you're there. Their choice of music is kind of funky. They were constantly playing hard rock? Gothic? Well something on those lines. Free WiFi is a plus if you're looking to come work from this place. read more

Nice little corner cafe/coffee shop. Vegan friendly galore. They have a goth/heavy metal vibe but it's not overbearing or creepy. Ordered the Greenwich added seitan on everything bagel. The taste was good and price was okay ~$8. Good menu for vegan sandwich options, I'll have to try them out. My one gripe is, I probably should've gotten a different bread base. The bagel was too small to hold it all together and I had to eat it separate vs sandwich style. Next time I go I'll ask for a different kind and see if it's a better experience! So this is a cute little coffee shop with quality coffee, and plenty of seating. There is window bar seating at the front and more tables and a couch in the back. The service was good enough. The four stars is because the punk rock music they were playing is just really not my vibe. So of course that influences whether or not I will be returning. We ordered the Kropotkin sandwich with Tofurky, a whole grain everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, an oat milk mocha, an oat milk chai latte and a cream cheese coffeecake slice. We loved the kropotkin sandwich! It was delicious with the roasted peppers and the creamy pesto veganaise. It had a strong pickle taste. We had it on sourdough but next time we wanna try it on pumpernickel bread! The bagel with the scallion cream cheese was insanely good too. The cream cheese was super thick and creamy. The cream cheese coffeecake was super delicious too. We loved the brown sugar flavor with the creamy filling. The drinks were excellent and beautiful! Even with the traffic making us late to pick up everything was still hot! The grizzli breakfast sandwich was the best vegan breakfast sandwich I've ever had, I miss it already. I have t had a brownie since going vegan two years ago and this one was just how I remember them! You've never know it was vegan and it was super fresh and soft still. I was disappointed that they are take out only, and that we had to order using a QR code (which seems to be common in Philly). The whole thing felt a little inhuman to be honest. One of the woman inside saw me struggling on my phone for a few minutes to place an order and then came out and took my order with her tablet thing. Done in less than a minute. The bre ad was delicious. My mocha was strong and delicious too. Chai tea latte was a bit too sweet for our taste, a tad bit cinamony too. Not the best. Ambiance is casual. They have limited seating upfront, but more seating indoors. Also have a book shelf for reading. Lot of kid books. The servers were friendly. Hard metal music playing in the background. Good place to work if you are alone and prefer music in the background. The place was not very crowded, but we were there on a Sunday afternoon. So not sure how bust it gets on other days. I walked here to grab my boyfriend & I a cup of coffee - the front door is blocked off by chairs & rope to stop people from coming in (understandable, I guess, since it is a smaller coffee shop & they don't want people coming inside due to covid but kind of unwelcoming). Anyway, when I walked up the woman working opens the front door, I say "Good morning, I'll have one large coffee -" and I'm interrupted by "YOU HAVE TO ORDER ONLINE". I say, "okay, do you take cash?" she abruptly answers "NO". The overall experience was just unpleasant & I felt like I was almost bothering the employees by showing up & trying to order a coffee. I understand there are precautions due to everything going on, however, why do I need to login to a website, create an account, & enter my credit card information to order two plain coffees? I absolutely love Grindcore House! It reminds me off an intimate Portland artists caffeine mecca. Every time I come here there is always a cool art show! This time was no exception. They had super cool movie posters from Repo Man to Escape from NY! The colors popped and they filled the walls of the front and back room. Their cork board always has postings about cool shows coming up in the area too. There's always plenty of vegan treats. They serve up the Counter Culture coffee here and I love it. It's never too acidic. I also like that even though this place is vegan you have MULTIPLE milk substitute options from soy milk, almond milk, coconut creamer to soy creamer. The t-shirt design I love and have purchased is a play in death metal type. It's hilarious because it looks like a band shirt instead of a vegan coffee shop and I guess that's the point. They also have Dottie's Donuts here that are the recent vegan donut rage! I will be back next month and hopefully not too far from my death metal vegan coffee spot. And if that's also your musical interest the baristas will be sure to please your ear drums! I have to say thanks to the lovely lady who pulled out three shirts before I decided on the girl shirt! Very cute little place my friend and I discovered from Yelp looking for something small on a Saturday morning. They allow dogs in here which is nice because while sitting outside, we noticed a lot of people were walking their dogs and stopped in here. I had the Greenwich sandwich which consisted of avocado, tomato, lettuce, spinach, hummus and cucumber. Hummus and avocado!? Must get! A little disappointed though since I didn't taste any hummus. I also had the hot chocolate which had too much milk or cream and no chocolate taste. The atmosphere was nice and sitting outside under a tree and a kind of quiet little neighborhood was nice. They also have more seating indoors but we only peeked inside. Not sure there is a point to their website. There is no menu or at least I couldn't find it which would then mean it was poorly designed. read more
