    Tuna melt

First time at Grey's and it definitely won't be my last! I was a fan of Mattie's, which was formerly in this same space, but honestly, this is an upgrade. The aesthetics are simple and welcoming, a great diner vibe, and the addition of the bar makes the space feel even more inviting. The staff was so warm and helpful with recommendations from the menu, which made it tough to choose! We ended up trying the tuna melt and the signature lasagna, and both absolutely lived up to the hype. While simple, the homemade onion rings were a total showstopper--robust and packed with flavor. Don't skip dessert, the chocolate peanut butter pie is delicious! I a huge fan of a good savory cocktail and highly recommend the Slow Burn, a pickleback martini. ,Grey's serves this one in impressive drinkware, which is always a nice perk. I will certainly be back and look forward to trying their breakfast options next!

Shout out to the hosts. Walking in, there was an upset family of 4 that did not have reservations on Mothers Day where it was clearly stated online, reservations only and multiple signs at the front. The lady was extremely rude and disrespectful to the front hosts. And the hosts were so kind in the face of heat. I see why it was reservations only, the food was SO GOOD. my husband and I split our entrees. At first glance, the overnight yeast waffles seemed overwhelming as a stack of 3. But they were so light and crispy, paired with the honey crisp apple butter, made it addictive! The black bean chilaquiles were such a surprise! They weren't overly spicy unless you caught a jalepeno. Well seasoned while still showcasing the freshness of the produce. I cannot wait to come back for lunch!

Went back for dinner at Grey's and it was a home run! Everything was fantastic from the second you walk in the door. You can taste the local quality and love in the food, beverages and hospitality. Orange crush and merch not pictured. Put this one on your list!

Chef Sam is at it again! Take everything you love about diner fare, and then elevate it and you have Grey's Diner. Sure, it's not a "diner" in the sense that it doesn't have a 20 page menu, but all the staples you know and love from a diner can be found here - and what's not to love about eating in a nostalgic dining car! We came for dinner and loved everything! The simple salad has some fun pops with pumpkin seeds and Brie bites. The lasagna is a star for sure! We also loved the Salisbury steak (the mashed potatoes are spot on). Unfortunately, we didn't have room for dessert, but will certainly save room for the chocolate cake or peanut butter pie next time!!

If you don't come here for breakfast, you're really missing out! The food is amazing! The service is fantastic and the prices are just right! Sam Diminich has hit another home run. As someone who was friends with his father, I'm sure he's looking down with a great big smile on his face that Sam is continuing the family legacy. We'll be back soon to try lunch and dinner.

Grey's quickly landed itself in the regular rotation. The breakfast is a fantastic way to start the day sitting in the diner. I enjoyed dinner in the dining room and was amazed at the distinct vibe that has - just steps away from the diner portion we all know and love. Outstanding food and incredible detail in each dish. Loved the black bean chilaquiles from the vegan menu and the veggie fajita plate at dinner time. Service is great and you feel like everything is taken care of or looked into for you no problem. Their offerings are unique and this is such a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait to go back!

We were a frequent Mattie's diner visitors and were really sad when they left but knowing another diner is coming up gave us hope. We tried the place finally - honestly the food was okay - we got sloppy joe and hummus pita bowl - was a lil disappointed on how small the vegan menu is now and both the items we ordered had basically no protein but their vegan shake was AWESOME....i also found the place much costly compare to Mattie's

Grey's Diner is definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a great breakfast or brunch spot. I really enjoyed the old-fashioned yeast waffles. They were a nice change from the typical sweeter waffles and had a great texture. What really stood out was the owner taking the time to greet every table, shake hands, and genuinely connect with guests. Great food, great service, and such a welcoming atmosphere. I'll definitely be back!

Grabbed a late lunch at Grey's Diner & man was it great! It's a new diner that opened up by Chef Sam in Charlotte & I would def recommend!

    Cruel Summer

I'll start off by saying I think the comparisons of Grey's to Mattie's are a bit odd. Sure they kept some decor, but it's like comparing a McDonald's that took over a Wendy's building. A drive though yes, but a very different burger. My partner and I went on Saturday around 7:30pm. Started with the Cruel Summer cocktail. It sadly wasn't good. There was no strawberry flavor, the phosphate soda didn't stand out, and generally just tasted like a weak gin and tonic. Could have used strawberry syrup and some fresh citrus juice. I opted for the flounder and my partner the burger. I got the simple side salad with my flounder, and really enjoyed the miso vinaigrette! The fries were great; crispy and salty with that deep almost malty potato flavor. The onion rings were incredible. Lightly battered so the batter doesn't fall off the onion, and they had a really nice flavor. I tried the burger, and yeah, it was a burger. Good black pepper flavor but over salted and overcooked. The flounder had a great peppery flavor, almost a Cajun-esque flavor profile? I enjoyed that aspect. The breading texture however was really odd. Idk if it was just my piece, but it wasn't crispy at all and almost had a stale bread like texture? Just strange, and paired with the softer flesh of the fish it didn't have a great mouth feel. The desserts were fine. Vanilla milkshake and peanut butter pie which were very very okay. I wish I had a better review, and I will happily try them again for breakfast, but maybe not for another couple months. Opening weeks are hard.

Formerly Mattie's Diner, Grey's has moved into the former classic American diner building. Living in the neighborhood, I'm glad that the location stayed as a local eatery. I will admit though, although Mattie's breakfast and food had some room for improvement, I did really like their vast options for breakfast lunch and dinner. Grey's food, I had the omelet with potatoes and side of bacon. The potatoes were slightly undercooked and there were only two slices of bacon which were thick cut but very small. Especially for $6. Prepare for a bit of a sticker shock for what you get. I've attached the bill and I'm shaking my head. Grey's, from a visual perspective is essentially a lift and shift from the prior restaurant. Not much change but that's fine. The building is also the charm. Grey's menu, however, is much more limited than its predecessor along with their portion sizes. Check their website for menu as it may change since the time of this post. The official opening is April 27 and it looks as though they have soft opened. It would be unfair to compare Grey's to Mattie's... it's a little unavoidable. I also have Jack Beagle's in mind as that is also walkable from us along with Workman's Friend and other spots in each of those opposite hotspots. For anyone who has eaten at either though, you will notice a difference for the cost and quality. Again, new owner and menu, quality consistency of food preparation with new kitchen and staff I'm sure will improve. However, dollar to serving, I feel I'll likely continue to Jack Beagle's, Workman's Friend and keep Grey's in the back pocket.

Authentic diner experience with great quality food! We sat at the counter, and had a lovely attentive server, Holly. We ordered breakfast- eggs with bacon and cheddar grits and a biscuit, and an omelette with hash browns and a biscuit. The portions are generous and the food is locally sourced and of better quality- everything tasted great! Our placemat listed all the local sources for the food, connecting the community with information- (cool!), and there are signs and reminders of a willingness to help anyone with food insecurity, no questions asked- (love this!) And- our breakfast proceed tag was very reasonable. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

***UPDATE******* I returned for a second visit after speaking with Jill, and I want to start by complimenting the excellent customer service. Our server, Riley, was energetic, knowledgeable, and provided outstanding service. The food was delicious--I'm especially glad I chose the chicken parmesan. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try breakfast, since I've heard so many great things about it. Overall, I was very pleased with the service, food, and atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend Grey's to anyone looking for affordable, high-quality food in a unique setting.

A diner, with their wide menu, works well. And our lunch today at Mattie's was excellent. We arrived right at the tail end of the lunch rush. A friendly hostess brought us to the last booth in the front section of the restaurant and then a waitress took our drink orders. Lots of shouting and "Order ready!" from the kitchen while we looked over the menu and then placed our orders. About ten minutes later, a plate of French Toast with vegan sausage on the side for Mrs. K. Light, fluffy, delicious. The sausage was great! For me, Mattie's Mom's Meatloaf. A massive thick slice of meatloaf topped with melted cheese, grilled onions and spicy marinara. My two sides, a creamy cole slaw and green beans with bacon were excellent. We both enjoyed our meals. Neither of us could finish the huge plates! Five stars, will definitely return. [Review 649 of 2025 - 4136 in North Carolina - 24210 overall]

But the Bestie that wanted to have this met me in the parking lot scared there would be cross contamination and wanted to go elsewhere. He's been a dedicated vegan since 2008 or 2010. Either way, this ain't for play nor show. He's principled. The other vegan is really pescatarian and could careless. I have severe allergies and definitely care if there's cross contamination. Young lady seating is asked about how the cooktop works for vegan items: 1) is there a separate cooktop? 2) are new utensils used? They did a good job answering and owning what they didn't know but sought someone to answer the questions. Young lady showed us the place where we'll sit and she would go get answers and be right back. She never came back. Alas, the server showed up and he didn't know either nor did anyone ask him or inform him. I had to clean the table and seats were more upsetting to me. The busboy popped nearby and I asked for his spray bottle and he apologized saying he'd clean. H wiped everything but dried nothing. Server returned without answers but someone got another guy to explain their process. He was helpful. I was content. I can say pics on Yelp leave much to be desired but I got the chicken fried chicken + mashed potatoes and sweet potato waffle fries. The vegans got their food first and we got an explanation. I didn't care. Bring it as it's ready. I understand. Plus y'all know vegan cheese doesn't melt. Lol. I didn't desire their vegan breakfast quesadilla nor padrino (I think that's what one had). See pictures. I must say I wanted to get the greens but I will definitely order them on another visit. The vegan ordered vegan pancakes for All to try. I like the crispy edges of any pancake but didn't need the pecans. The vegan butter and syrup was impressive. We got a lot of apologies in due time as 1) straws were forgotten 2) soup of day query was forgotten 3) refills forgotten 4) table wasn't cleaned 5) Milkshake was delayed but hey ... It takes as long as it takes. But I didn't order it so I can't say. I was most bothered the itemized check was taken away so I don't have an image for this review but also BECAUSE a huge convo took place regarding the tip. A new immigrant to the USA was amongst us AND had legit questions so I was happy to explain but their receipts show 20% totals and higher for tipping yet this receipt show the total with tax. Tips for on the pre-tax total. Long and short I can recommend 1) fried chicken fried 2) sweet potato waffle fries 3) mashed potatoes 4) brown and light gravy 5) vegan pancakes 6) American potatoes looked great but I didn't touch em as I had plenty Parking is rough. Cleanup in between flipping/turning tables doesn't really happen in the overflow and I'm good on that. Like, sweeping and wiping can be done between tables and as parties depart. The staff is younger like everyone appear to be teens which led a dining member inquire where are the adults? I think I saw 1. There is an overflow parking lot.

A must stop for both dinner and Southern breakfast enthusiasts…read more On my way home from Charlotte, I used Yelp to find me a classic diner to start my day off right. I choose the Crack of Dawn Diner in Concord. I am so glad I did. Crack of Dawn Diner is the real thing--a local Concord breakfast-and-lunch spot serving traditional Southern fare at reasonable prices. The menu caters to local tastes, the dining room is filled with regulars, and the atmosphere is comfortable rather than trendy. Parking is somewhat limited. The private lot surrounding the restaurant was fully used so I parked in the lot next door that had signs that said private property, but it looked like other patrons were parking there also so I took the chance. As it turns out, it was safe to park there. The entrance is very welcoming, as well as the staff. Amanda was my very efficient and nice waitress. There is great teamwork here, and Amanda was well supported by, I believe, the owner who ran my food out and talked a bit with me. The menu is fascinating. A distinctly North Carolina menu. Several things jumped out: * Breakfast special for $6.59 weekdays * Breakfast plates mostly under $12 * Grits included as a side option * Livermush available * City ham and country ham both offered * Pork chops available for breakfast I ordered the country-fried steak with white gravy (essentially chicken-fried steak), along with two sunny-side-up eggs, perfectly prepared grits, a large buttermilk biscuit, and a delicious diner coffee. The restaurant occupies a stand-alone building with a warm, "come on in and rest a spell" atmosphere. Inside, you'll find counter seating, an open kitchen, and tables throughout the dining room. I chose a seat by the window overlooking the parking area. This was a great breakfast, that was reasonably priced, in a great atmosphere, with very nice people. It stuck to both my mind and ribs all day long. After breakfast, I continued on to downtown Concord and spent some time exploring one of North Carolina's most charming revitalized downtown districts. The breakfast was the perfect start to the morning. Crack of Dawn Diner has earned a spot on my repeat list whenever my travels take me through the Charlotte-Concord area.

At least it's free. Walked in and there's a line - all were waiting for take out so we were able to bypass them all and was seated right away. Good thing too as the place was just packed. Not an empty table when I went to the restroom or when we were leaving. Service was great. Team effort. Several different team members provided service. From taking your order to refills as follow up and general questions. They were busy but still took time to make sure everyone was taken care of. I say that not that I was in a big party - I meant other tables too. And the food was nice, simple and good. See pics. I wanted the meat gravy I hadn't had in a long time. Then some protein and grits of course. I cleared the plate but couldn't polish off the grits. I was so full on the sweetened ice team that there was no room for anything else. Even the tea hits different in the south, compared to California. Not saying this is the best food you'll ever have but it'll definitely be decent comfort food. Inexpensive and simple.
