Diner comfort foods made with locally sourced ingredients?! Say less. We came on a Monday for brunch to avoid any potential crowds, and there was plenty of seating in the additional room. Entering through the original diner car was super cool, and it's nice that there's also a more spacious option. We were with our toddler and had brought her clip-on high chair, but the table we were sat at felt too wobbly to attach it to, so we just used one of the high chairs they had there. They have a dedicated kids' menu and crayons they can color on it with, so very family-friendly overall! To drink, I got an iced oat milk latte with vanilla, which was made with local Enderly coffee and came in a nice glass. To eat, we shared the fried chicken biscuit with a side a home fries, the yeast waffles with butter & apple butter, and an extra side of grits. All was very tasty! The grits were creamy, and served with lots of fresh scallions on top. Personally I thought the scallion flavor was a bit overwhelming, but it was easy enough to scoop them out. The chicken was seasoned well and fried crispy. And the yeast waffles were a bit tangy with a great texture, and eaten with the apple butter, it has a great fall flavor. I think prices are pretty reasonable considering the farm-to-table approach. Recommend giving Grey's a visit! read more

First time at Grey's and it definitely won't be my last! I was a fan of Mattie's, which was formerly in this same space, but honestly, this is an upgrade. The aesthetics are simple and welcoming, a great diner vibe, and the addition of the bar makes the space feel even more inviting. The staff was so warm and helpful with recommendations from the menu, which made it tough to choose! We ended up trying the tuna melt and the signature lasagna, and both absolutely lived up to the hype. While simple, the homemade onion rings were a total showstopper--robust and packed with flavor. Don't skip dessert, the chocolate peanut butter pie is delicious! I a huge fan of a good savory cocktail and highly recommend the Slow Burn, a pickleback martini. ,Grey's serves this one in impressive drinkware, which is always a nice perk. Shout out to the hosts. Walking in, there was an upset family of 4 that did not have reservations on Mothers Day where it was clearly stated online, reservations only and multiple signs at the front. The lady was extremely rude and disrespectful to the front hosts. And the hosts were so kind in the face of heat. I see why it was reservations only, the food was SO GOOD. my husband and I split our entrees. At first glance, the overnight yeast waffles seemed overwhelming as a stack of 3. But they were so light and crispy, paired with the honey crisp apple butter, made it addictive! The black bean chilaquiles were such a surprise! Chef Sam is at it again! Take everything you love about diner fare, and then elevate it and you have Grey's Diner. Sure, it's not a "diner" in the sense that it doesn't have a 20 page menu, but all the staples you know and love from a diner can be found here - and what's not to love about eating in a nostalgic dining car! We came for dinner and loved everything! The simple salad has some fun pops with pumpkin seeds and Brie bites. The lasagna is a star for sure! We also loved the Salisbury steak (the mashed potatoes are spot on). Grey's quickly landed itself in the regular rotation. The breakfast is a fantastic way to start the day sitting in the diner. I enjoyed dinner in the dining room and was amazed at the distinct vibe that has - just steps away from the diner portion we all know and love. Outstanding food and incredible detail in each dish. They were a nice change from the typical sweeter waffles and had a great texture. I'll start off by saying I think the comparisons of Grey's to Mattie's are a bit odd. Sure they kept some decor, but it's like comparing a McDonald's that took over a Wendy's building. A drive though yes, but a very different burger. My partner and I went on Saturday around 7:30pm. Started with the Cruel Summer cocktail. It sadly wasn't good. There was no strawberry flavor, the phosphate soda didn't stand out, and generally just tasted like a weak gin and tonic. Could have used strawberry syrup and some fresh citrus juice. I opted for the flounder and my partner the burger. I got the simple side salad with my flounder, and really enjoyed the miso vinaigrette! The fries were great; crispy and salty with that deep almost malty potato flavor. The onion rings were incredible. Lightly battered so the batter doesn't fall off the onion, and they had a really nice flavor. I tried the burger, and yeah, it was a burger. Good black pepper flavor but over salted and overcooked. The flounder had a great peppery flavor, almost a Cajun-esque flavor profile? I enjoyed that aspect. The breading texture however was really odd. Idk if it was just my piece, but it wasn't crispy at all and almost had a stale bread like texture? Just strange, and paired with the softer flesh of the fish it didn't have a great mouth feel. The desserts were fine. Vanilla milkshake and peanut butter pie which were very very okay. I wish I had a better review, and I will happily try them again for breakfast, but maybe not for another couple months. Opening weeks are hard. read more

Formerly Mattie's Diner, Grey's has moved into the former classic American diner building. Living in the neighborhood, I'm glad that the location stayed as a local eatery. I will admit though, although Mattie's breakfast and food had some room for improvement, I did really like their vast options for breakfast lunch and dinner. Grey's food, I had the omelet with potatoes and side of bacon. The potatoes were slightly undercooked and there were only two slices of bacon which were thick cut but very small. Especially for $6. Prepare for a bit of a sticker shock for what you get. I've attached the bill and I'm shaking my head. Grey's, from a visual perspective is essentially a lift and shift from the prior restaurant. Not much change but that's fine. The building is also the charm. Grey's menu, however, is much more limited than its predecessor along with their portion sizes. Check their website for menu as it may change since the time of this post. The official opening is April 27 and it looks as though they have soft opened. It would be unfair to compare Grey's to Mattie's... it's a little unavoidable. I also have Jack Beagle's in mind as that is also walkable from us along with Workman's Friend and other spots in each of those opposite hotspots. For anyone who has eaten at either though, you will notice a difference for the cost and quality. Again, new owner and menu, quality consistency of food preparation with new kitchen and staff I'm sure will improve. However, dollar to serving, I feel I'll likely continue to Jack Beagle's, Workman's Friend and keep Grey's in the back pocket. read more

Authentic diner experience with great quality food! We sat at the counter, and had a lovely attentive server, Holly. We ordered breakfast- eggs with bacon and cheddar grits and a biscuit, and an omelette with hash browns and a biscuit. The portions are generous and the food is locally sourced and of better quality- everything tasted great! Our placemat listed all the local sources for the food, connecting the community with information- (cool!), and there are signs and reminders of a willingness to help anyone with food insecurity, no questions asked- (love this!) We were very happy to see this place reopening in our neighborhood. But we immediately noticed that the menu is quite small, which is likely understandable since they have just reopened. The cocktails were good. 5/5 However, the food was just okay. My potatoes were undercooked, which affected the overall impression of the dish, and my partner had the same issue with their potatoes as well. The potatoes were also cut into uneven pieces, so the smaller pieces were cooked perfectly, but the larger ones were still undercooked. I ordered the house special, and I would not order it again. The bacon portions were quite small compared to other places. On a positive note, the place looks clean and the staff is very friendly. We might come back again since it is very close to us, but not more than that. read more

Grey's is an incredible Farm to table diner doing it right with high quality proteins and produce from local farms. Seriously, you cannot get a better sourced menu in this city - everything is farm fresh and raised and grown right. We have been for both breakfast and dinner and have enjoyed all of our food. Some highlights are the buttermilk pancakes (with real maple syrup and whipped butter yum!), eggplant Parmesan sandwich, shrimp and grits, and the peanut butter mousse pie. They have a coffee bar and a full liquor bar with a super fun song-themed cocktail menu. I had the "Cruel Summer" and it was delicious. One thing that really stands out is how fresh and juicy and ripe the produce is. The tomatoes are red and fresh and flavorful, and the strawberries in my drink were so ripe and sweet, you just can't get produce like that at most restaurants. The prices are higher than a typical diner, but this is not a typical diner and honestly with the work they're doing and the quality of ingredients, I think it's all very fair. Well priced beers and I had the shrimp and grits and certainly would recommend-the sauce had a Smokey savor flavor and the grits were great & creamy. Living along the Georgia Coast where the shrimp are huge and sweet have to be honest these were a bit small but they were plump and fresh. I'll be back again when back in town. " Friendships start right here" I read this on the door as we came in today. So thankful to be back in this very special place. Happy to see that the former Matties is now in a new season of life as Grey's diner. We were greeted and promptly seated by the hostess in a booth in the diner area. Love the charm and nostalgia of the surroundings. It was busy in their opening week. Some people were also dining at the counter. We ordered breakfast. I had the chicken biscuit which was a very generous portion and the cheddar grits both were very good, but I partically liked how the grits were prepared. Husband ordered the omelet with hasbrowns and cleaned up his plate so I think he enjoyed it. Something that I noticed and appreciated about the staff was it was definitely a team effort.When it got busy for our server other staff were quick to attentively notice and help us when we needed something. Also the bathrooms are wheelchair accessible with alot of thought and care put into it. There was a baby changing table as well as feminine hygiene products available for guests and even little candies offered too. I appreciate all the care in this. I took a few pics of the nice decor and eclectic books and things in the bathroom. I have a heart for those who have struggled with and overcome addiction and it's inspiring to know that the Chef, Sam Diminich is someone who has done this. Big props. I also noticed the family friendly vibe with crayons and coloring available for children. The check was brought to us with a cute postcard of Grey's Diner a nice keepsake that also had history of the diner on it. Very thoughtful. Finally had dinner at Grey's. I got the burger and fries. Flavor was good on everything, but for $19 for a single patty, you can justify going maybe once every couple of months. As a neighbor, you wish that a diner wouldn't have to be higher end. It should be a spot you can pop in and get a quick, affordable meal. This is the antithesis of that. read more

It has great spirit and the staff could not have been any better., We actually had Grey waiting on our table. He was so helpful in recommending what dishes we should have. He is a super guy. It is hard to believe the quality of the food being prepared in such a small space. We had peanut butter pie for dessert and it was delicious. Me and two friends made the trek to Grey's, having enjoyed Matties several times when it was open. First, the positives. The service was great, and the burger was delicious. Food came pretty quickly. However, a burger and fries for $25 bucks is a lot. The onion rings were good, but not cooked enough, and they left a pool of oil in the dish. The menu is very small. We went to Grey's Diner on Memorial Day for breakfast. When we arrived, we were told the wait would be between one and one and a half hours. We decided to wait. We were seated in about half an hour, but that timing was way off. We easily could have decided to leave, and that would be bad for business. It was one of the quirks I think they need to work out yet. I got the French toast and a side of bacon and my wife got the omelet with grits. She liked her food, and that's good, because she doesn't like food much. I am a foodie, and I thought my French toast was good as well as the bacon, though it was only two strips, and orders usually consist of 3. It was $4, and I think a happy medium would be 3 for $5. At $14, I thought the French toast was a couple of bucks too high, since it didn't come with anything else such as fruit, a topping, etc. My main concern was the service. Our server was very nice, but the food took a really long time to come out. At one point, she came by to say it would be up soon, realizing how long it was taking. I ordered an iced latte, which came first, and the runner didn't know if I or my wife ordered it. When our food came, same situation, though initially, the runner was bringing it to the table next to us. When she went by us, she again didn't know who ordered what. It shouldn't be that hard, especially at a table of 2. I think there is a lot of training that needs to be done for the restaurant to run efficiently, because that's the biggest problem, between not knowing who ordered what and taking so long to bring the food. To leave on a positive note, the food was definitely good and we both agreed we would come back to eat there. We're hoping the service catches up to the food. read more

This is such an amazing addition to the neighborhood. We had two dinners, and drinks, and bill was barely $50. The fried flounder was perfect- light breading and came with a balanced and fresh tartar sauce. The standout even more so was the shrimp and grits - husband enjoyed every bite. The decor was reminiscent of a 50's diner with similar booths, a small jukebox at each table (for decoration only), and stools at the counter. The staff were friendly, and very responsive. I'd been hearing about this new diner in Charlotte and finally decided to check it out, and it was like, "Why did I wait so long to come here?" We sat in a booth on the diner side, with a good vibe crowd in the house. Our waiter, Harrison, was cool and professionally thorough.
