PARTY REVIEW: Hosted a Surprise birthday party at this venue on a warm spring day and it was much a surprise to myself. Our group had so much fun! I had a party of around 15 and we reserved a table by the main bar towards the entrance. This place is packed on a sunny weekend day, so be ready for music, drinking and a surprise visit from a saxophone player. Crowds were flowing which made it difficult to move around and chat comfortably , and music was blasting very loudly making it hard to hear conversations. But I guess its just the spot for a day-drinking shindig. This place got REALLY packed, but the bartenders were really nice and respectful when it came to serving drinks to our group. The doorman Sam was super collaborative and worked with my guests to help plan a surprise entrance for my friend upon their entry. Thanks Sam! Another day, another $1 oyster happy hour. There aren't a lot of these deals left in the city so my only advice would be to run to these while you can. Grey Lady has a beautiful warm aesthetic and inviting interior that calls out to patrons loudly with it's big and bold neon sign outside that screams SEAFOOD and OYSTERS. I came in here and plopped myself at the bar. They have amazing happy hour specials like 2 for 1 espresso martinis and aperol spritz as well as $6 draft beers and selection of wine which in my opinion is an absolute steal in this economy. My bartender was super friendly and fun to talk to, we exchanged ideas on many life nuisances and he really made my visit that much more enjoyable. Give my boy Moe a raise now for real!! Jose was a bright and happy spirit who kept the oysters coming. I started with 24 oysters but they are a little on the smaller side, and so I sheepishly ordered 24 more. I think because they're on the smaller side is how I ended up breaking my own oyster personal record at 48..(please don't judge I have a problem).. The droppers for hot sauce and mignonette are a creative twist but I definitely prefer the good old horse radish and cocktail sauce combo. These were refreshing nonetheless. They have a variety of other food on their menu too which I didn't get to but would definitely try next time I come around. Cool place with cool vibes. Passed by and saw the happy hour sign, place opens at 5. We walked in about 5:10 and there was one guy sitting at the bar. They $1 oysters and happy hour wine and beer and a couple of house cocktails. The $1 oysters were Wellpoints so we got a few dozen and beer and wine and had a fun time. It was a Tuesday and there was one bartender and one waitress. Hour later the joint was packed. But service was still good. Literally every seat was taken, its dark inside with a nautical theme and they played some funky cool music. Would definitely return. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a quick bite to eat and some drinks. There was a crowd but a good amount tables and seats available at the bar which was great. The place felt both busy but spacious. It was awesome. The music selection and volume were great, you could hear the music but still have a conversation at a comfortable volume with those around you. I was on a first date here and she let us know that she unfortunately didn't put our order in before oysters for happy hour were sold out. The place was packed on a Sunday afternoon, but the hostess and waiter was able to get us our seats right away. The one dollar oysters are actually pretty big and they provide two different oils that you can use to eat the oysters with . You literally can't move so I don't think I would recommend this to anybody, but I will say we came here for someone's birthday and we had the back room rented out for a few hours, and that was pretty pleasant, but other than that, I would not come here again. I'm stoked. They have $1 oysters at Happy Hour! That's so rare these days. Almost all the $1 oyster HH I know of in Manhattan are done. They just don't exist anymore but they still have it here??? There's also other food that I will need to come back for next time such as $3 clams, $10 crinkle fries, quarter pounder, fish tacos, maybe fish and chips, I'm getting hungry thinking about it. I was there on a Wednesday at around 6:30pm. Their happy hour ends at 7pm. It wasn't crowded at all, which was nice. The outdoor seatings were packed but the indoor seatings were open as you can see in my pictures of the interior. The service was fast. I was seated immediately as I walked in, given a menu, glass of cold water, and my order was taken promptly afterwards. The ambiance was great. They have high ceilings, large windows making the restaurant very well-lit, and I like the design of the place overall. I think Grey Lady would be the perfect place for first dates (given the not-overdoing ambiance, not messy food, and it's not loud or crowded so you can actually talk and have some privacy, yet it's a nice bar and restaurant). I came here at lunchtime with a friend. It wasn't busy, but it seemed like a cute spot. Plenty of people on dates. Drinks are good. We started with the shrimp and fries. I didn't expect the shrimp to be that big. I'm not a crinkle-cut fry guy, but these were so delicious. The artichoke dip was good. The lobster roll was so amazing. Do I think it was worth $45? No, but I understand lobster isn't cheap, and the business won't pay for itself, so it's worth trying. I also tried the Poboy sandwich, and I should've gotten the cheeseburger. Honestly, we came here for the HH $1 oysters (can't believe that is still a thing!) and we're so glad we did because they were delicious... I mean I had a little more than two dozen. The best part was that we were there on a Sunday and apparently on Sundays, they extend the $1 oysters so that's a plus. We ordered the clam chowder and the French onion which both were delicious! For drinks, my partner ordered an IPA and our friend ordered a glass of wine (nothing too fancy there) but they had a classic mojito on the menu for HH so I asked if I could get a coconut mojito and the bartender was happy to do so at no additional charge... and let me tell you it was delicious!!! The oysters were good and fresh and I loved the trio of sauces provided in the mini squeeze bottle + the peppery mignonette was good. Outside of that it was short staffed but unfortunately I was provided not great service which I believe was racially motivated as I was the only black customer dining and I watched the waiter check in with other customers regularly to check if everything was okay and if they wanted anything else. I even watched two customers who came in after me, get their order taken, get their food, ate and left before the waiter came back around to me. I ended up waiting 15+ mins to just pay my bill until my boyfriend came and insisted we just take it up to the bar so we can leave. French onion soup looks nice but overall was a 3 out of 10. Onions weren't even fully caramelized so it had crunchy onions + very watery loose broth with not enough flavor or richness.
