This constant traffic invaded our personal space, and it might be worth considering moving the table or relocating the silverware. The food was good, with decent portion sizes, but I was surprised that no bread or small snacks were provided while waiting. I just don't get it. Have dined here twice now and as many reviewers state, the burger is quite good. But I can get a great burger at numerous places in the city without having to deal with the numerous "pain in the ass" factors in going to Grey Ghost. No valet and parking is as mentioned, a pain in the ass. They basically treat you like garbage being seated. Not sure if the air wasn't working or they had too many doors open but we literally had sweat dripping down us the entire meal. I am quite sure it would have been cooler if we had selected patio seating. Now once seated the service has always been exceptional. The wine list is awful and the food is just okay. Anytime someone asks, "Where should we go for happy hour?" or "I've got a friend visiting--any recommendations?" my answer is always Grey Ghost. It has never let me down. On my most recent visit, my wife, some friends, and I enjoyed a nice big meal. We started with the Fried Potato Salad, Steak Tartare, and Zucchini Tots--each was packed with flavor. The crispy chicken skin in the potato salad added a satisfying crunch and an incredible depth of flavor. Portion sizes were generous across the board, but the Steak Tartare stole the show. It's an absolute must-try! For mains, we split their classic burger (easily one of the top 3 in the city!) and the filet mignon. The food though was the most interesting with a rotating menu every two weeks to keep things fresh! I loved the overall vibe and decor. We were a little bit thrown off that you could not see yourself at the bar but we ended up not waiting a super long time after all. We went across the street to have cocktails while we were waiting, which was a very pleasant experience. Our server was very helpful in explaining things to us and making recommendations since it is a very unique menu. I enjoyed everything I ate and drank, although portions are smaller. It is definitely a pricier place because I do feel like you are paying for the experience as well. The conclusion of our meal when the bill came was the only major issue I had all night. Came here on a Friday night around 7pm, didn't have reservations and managed to get seats on a table top near the bar. I was happy to see they had mocktails and I recommend the lavender crème one (forgot the actual name), because it tasted like a creamy pina colada crossed with an orange Julius. We got the octopus torchon which was thinly sliced octopus on a waffle. The ginger aoli sauce really shined and we practically cleaned the plate! The roasted turnips was also very tasty and refreshing. For our mains we got scallops which I thought would come with 4 scallops from the other pics on Yelp but disappointedly only came with 3. Cooked well but I wish it had more for a sear on it. The star of the dish was the spicy njuda sauce. I'm not too tolerable to spicy but it was done just right. It had the perfect kick and made a great pairing to pure scallops. The ny strip was cooked via sous vide so it would've been hard to mess up at medium rare. It had a side of oxtail(?) hash brown? Our server James was polite and knowledgeable of the menu and gave good recommendations. It was VERY busy and we saw he had several other tables yet still checked in with us at very well timed intervals. We didn't not leave wanting. Ambience was loud and hip. Parking in this neighborhood is a nightmare. I wish they had their own lot but unless you park far away in a structure, you can park next door to the restaurant for a charge or $40!!! Those parking attendants are also swindlers. He got the Bavette steak, served with grits and onion compote, and some delicious fried bell pepper rings. Both were tasty, but the NY strip was just so perfectly cooked; it melted in my mouth. The server was super knowledgeable and very nice throughout the evening. Everyone that worked there was super great, refilling out water before it got low, and just going above and beyond to make it a super great evening. Overall, great experience. Food was delicious. The third time that I went, l our party of 4 was pretty disappointed. The service was wonderful, but we found that most of our entrees were EXTREMELY salty. This last time I went with another party of 4 for a friend's birthday dinner and our experience was great. We got the Brussels sprouts, fries, and the deep fried mushrooms. They went over really well and the drinks were also tasty. For the entrees we got 2 scallops, a chicken dish, and the pork. We spent the night at Grey Ghost for my birthday. First off, the staff was EXCELLENT! They made me feel very special for my birthday. Our server Sarah was great! Her service was amazing and she was so knowledgeable and helpful with all the questions we had. We split the brussel sprouts and the baked ricotta. The ricotta was so creamy and it was the perfect combo on top of the garlic asiago sourdough that comes with it. For entrees we ordered the Venison Shank and Spaghetti Carbonara. The Venison Shank had a guajillo jus that was so flavorful with a little spice to it! The meat was so tender that it fell off the bone. The bone marrow at the end was delightful! I really enjoyed the carbonara sauce on the Spaghetti Carbonara. You can tell the noodles are fresh made in house. All the drinks were delicious as well! My favorite was the Duck for Cover. I've been here numerous times to almost always a great meal & drinks. The first question that asks is, "do you have any allergies?" And a person I was with said egg. Apparently you're not allowed to say egg. They pretty much said that over half the menu had egg and they could t fix those. The choices without egg were mostly lamb which this person doesn't care for... or an $80 steak. They couldn't even make a burger without egg. I'm sorry but the skill & creativity that is in the kitchen should've been able to do better. So while visiting in Detroit, we decided on a date night and we landed on Grey Ghost. I was able to make a reservation and we were seated in a very timely fashion. Looking around, this place is very beautiful. It has a bar that seems to carry anything that you would want. Our waitress was amazing. We had dietary restrictions and she was on top of them all and was able to offer items that fit both restrictions. We placed our orders and waited. While scanning the restaurant, there was a man who kept walking by our table and side-eyeing. It wasn't till later we realized that he actually worked there. He cleared our table of the dishes. It would've been nice if he had spoken. He just seemed to lurk, which made us a little uneasy. At the end of dinner, we were offered two small desserts that again, fit our restrictions and they both were delicious! When Detroit's food scene first started humming there were some early restaurants that really started to make an impact and bring some shine down on the city. Then a second wave came through and and suddenly out food scene was blowing up all over the place. I always associate GG with that second wave. I've been here several.tomws now and their cocktail service is second to none. Consistently their bartenders come up with interesting and flavorful combinations that you just didn't find elsewhere. Now of course it's a different story, but at the time it was always such a great adventure trying one of their new cocktails. Foodwise, a very solid menu with wide ranging choices that I'm sure anyone can find something to choose from. While their food has always been good, it's not as eclectic or interesting as their cocktail list. Still, I have not been disappointed with anything I've ever had here. I think one of my favorite aspects of the restaurant is the aesthetics and ambience of it. It's not a large place, there's a coziness to it that reminds me of Paris for some reason. This food was so amazing. Had a nice date night. I always love the ambience. My only complaint was when I looked online there were a lot of availability for seating. However, the hostess told us that we could only sit at the bar. I watched the main dining hall, and some of the tables remain available, the entire duration that I was there. We ordered the short rib dumplings, which were OK. However, the egg plant tempura was the highlight. It was served on top of a hummus that was amazing. We also ordered the bone in ribeye, brussels sprouts, and long beans. All of the food was delicious except for the short rib dumplings. I was expecting shredded meat however, it reminded me of a turkey meatball. We also order several drinks that were made to perfection. Highly recommend.
