There was a good-sized bar in the front and a quieter dining area in the back. The service was appreciated and the food came out quickly. The Reuben egg rolls were ordered. They had a 1,000-island dressing along with a miso mustard. I liked the sauce choices, one traditional and the other unique. The egg rolls as a whole were solid. Started with the spinach dip and... yeah, that's a no from me. Not something I'd come back for. One friend got a taco and loved it so much she ordered a second. Another friend tried the chicken bites and said they were good. Drinks were decent. The staff? A little all over the place. I couldn't tell who my bartender actually was or who my tip even went to. This wonderful and wildly fun place is great! We loved the beer options of Kosst lager on tap or the Grand Trunk beer itself. Both cold and crisp and fantastic. These preztel bites were amazingly good. We suggest ordering two of them. The bartender Chris was wonderful and she knew all about art history as she studies this and got her degree on this. Was so nice to chit-chat about Diego Rivera and Frieda so nonchalantly. Shawn was also a standout bartender and made us feel so included and was welcoming to us! Very awesome Irish styles pub with excellent food like their spicy salmon sandwich and you can also swap out the fries with orzo. This was our second time here. It's a pub. So it's a little rustic, and nothing fancy. But the drinks are great as is the service! We've thoroughly enjoyed it both times. This time I had the loaded bloody mary with mini grilled cheese sandwiches. While the grilled cheese sandwiches were cold (not the greatest), the other garnishes were yummy, and the bloody mary came in a much larger size than the.regular. Here in Detroit on business and we were told about this place. It has been here for a while. Really interesting interior with a large bar. It is cool and dark which I really like. Our bartender was very personable and was all about letting us try the huge variety of beers that they offer. He had great food suggestions for food and drink. We stopped in to this friendly, lively local bar. Which may or may not be a dive bar. The service and staff were always very friendly. We would have beers and ordered a couple apps to munch on. I went here for lunch with a party of eight today. Our back room had a comfortable vibe with a fun railroad theme, including what seemed authentic train car parts. My portobello mushroom burger was novel - the mushroom was crispy, stuffed with cheese, and topped with a yummy aioli sauce and greens and accompanied by pretty good fries. Others in the party liked their meals, too. Our waitress was attentive without hovering or rushing. I will say that I wasn't wild about sitting on a high chair at a high table. Everything we tried we thoroughly enjoyed, we ordered the jalapeño popper wontons, insanely flavorful, side caesar salad was the perfect portion size with super fresh ingredients! I loved this place! Our waiter was really nice & we were able to talk to him about video games which was dope. There's low lighting but it definitely fits the aesthetic so I loved it. I ordered the spicy crispy. chicken sandwich and while I normally don't like blue cheese, I loved it on this sandwich! The sandwich isn't a patty also, it's two breaded tenders which is fine, just made it a little harder to eat. The fries were also great & the The Trunk drink was delish and strong! First off, the history of this building is always so interesting and it definitely is a unique space keeping with old Detroit. A great place to meet friends for drinks and easy bites. However, this last time, the food was mediocre at best. My chicken fingers were soggy, no crunch at all. The fries were lukewarm, nothing spectacular. But my cranberry mule was outstanding....not too sweet! Again, it's typical pub food, but could use a little improving in this department to get it up to par. Grand Trunk's food is decent but nothing extraordinary--more like something you'd crave after a night of drinking. The Chicken & Chips are tasty, but the $17 price for chicken strips and fries feels a bit steep. Service has been painfully slow in all three of my visits; a lunch experience for a group of 5 took around 2 hours from seating to paying the bill. It's an okay bar for drinks and maybe a quick bite, but be prepared for a wait. The bar area has a pub-like charm, while the back room is less impressive. With all that being said, I'll probably return since it's conveniently close to the office, and my coworkers appreciate the variety of lunch options available. Met some friends here in Detroit. They were busy but not full with plenty of open tables in the side room. Our waitress was very friendly and nice but appeared to be relatively new and inexperienced. She could have been more attentative but wasn't awful and was trying hard. The Brussel sprout dish and grilled cheese sandwich was pretty good. The tomato bisque was excellent. We ordered pub fries for an appetizer and they were excellent. They tended to be a bit salty but that is how I like my fries and we really enjoyed those. We've been going to Grand Trunk for years now. Beer selection is great, servers usually try really hard to give you the best service. It has seemed (even since pre-COVID) that they've been understaffed a little. This is my favorite place for fish and chips! They use a great beer batter, but my favorite part is the malt-vin aioli. Fries are awesome too! My Husband ordered the burger and enjoyed it! They have a good brunch as well. The building is really unique... we love the character and history of it. 4 stars for the the fries.....everything else is just 2-3 stars! Best fries in Detroit! The building is beautiful and has such potential for atmosphere but they have cheesy fall decorations with fake fall leaves and fall pumpkins. Service was friendly. I had a huge party of 25 that had reserved some tables but they were clearly not ready for us. Took about 90 minutes for the last person to receive their food. It I know this is an issue at many places these days. But really this rating is all about the fries! I have to say that these are some of my all time favorite fries. The seasoning is salty but just a tad bit sweet. R minds me of Hop Cats. I may have to do a taste test to see if there is a difference. Regardless, they are pretty dang good. read more
