Grey Cafe is Number 1 on my list of recommended cafes in the Flushing/Bayside area. I have been going to Grey, formerly Browny, for a number of years now and can honestly say that they deserve a 5-star rating. Nearly every time I've been there I have had a positive experience. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Grey Cafe was my go-to location for getting work done. I have even spent all-day sessions there prepping for my midterms and finals. What has contributed to that is the strong 3-legged foundation of excellent food and drinks, great service, and an environment that is just right for me. Each product I've bought at Grey so far has been satisfying. The coffee, bagels, desserts, etc. are all solid for what you're paying for. The lychee iced tea is a good refresher for a cold day. The pumpkin spice latte is a good drink for sweater weather season. I've yet to had a product that has disappointed me so far. The service is top of the line. The staff there are super courteous and do the little things right like keeping their indoor and outdoor seating clean. They have also done well during the pandemic with making sure the customers indoors are properly spaced out. I personally had an issue couple months ago with a potential stalker and when I brought that up with the staff they responded by beefing up their security and assuring me that they would keep a close eye out. Very appreciative of you guys for that! The vibe there is really solid. Comes down to personal preference, but the little things like cleanliness, good lighting, and background music at just the right volume are positive contributors for me enjoying my time there or getting work done. I love this place and during the pandemic they have some very thoughtful seating (some spots a little too close, but overall ok), with lots of umbrellas. Prices are up from when they used to be Browny (pandemic prices?), however quality is excellent and they also have a wide array of dairy substitutes. I want to give them 5 stars, but there is a problem where people keep thinking it's ok to smoke in the outdoor dining area (it's not, it's actually against the law). Their response when I tell them is iffy. Sometimes they remind their customers, sometimes they ignore my plea for a smoke free experience. If this occurs more frequently, I unfortunately may have to complain to the city. I don't want to, because I know it's hard on these businesses now, but they should really consistently remind people that outdoor dining areas are still dining areas and are subject to the no smoking law. read more

However, they have a spacious inside with ample seating. Great place to do work, study or socializing (separate seating for groups of four or more but limited due to Covid restrictions at this time). They have a great assortment of coffees, teas and pastries. I ordered a hot vanilla oat latte and a black coffee with a blueberry danish and a cinnamon sticky bun. All were delicious and we were able to enjoy their super stylish and all weather outdoor seating area. Honestly I never leave reviews but after being a loyal customer for the last 3 years and now having repetitive bad experiences , I felt like I had to say something. The coffee has gone downhill, and frequently I'll be served a stale dessert/pastry. I would go multiple days and it seems that the pastries are always the same so I have to wonder if they actually exchange them with new items or they're just reselling days old food. For the steep prices they charge, it's really disappointing. The cafe is always dirty now. The tables are always sticky and the trash is always overflowing. The bathroom also always has a puddle and smells so bad, they're always missing toilet paper and paper towels. I know a lot of people come to study and hang out but the seating is really uncomfortable to sit long term in my opinion and it's always really loud. Connecting to Wi-Fi is also a battle and you never know if you'll get access. It's a shame that this cafe has gone downhill over the years. They're losing loyal customers, and there are many options for good cafes in the neighborhood. Especially with better pricing. read more

I've been ordering vanilla lattes here for a while now. I finally had a chance to visit the cafe for a friends reunion after a year and I was happy to see that they had a separate section for groups. It was pretty crowded in the cafe and almost every table got taken whether that was the inside or the outside so there's not much social distancing. However, the cashier checked all out vaccination cards prior to letting us sit inside the group area so that was nice when it comes to safety precautions. I'm only giving Grey cafe a 4 star because there doesn't seem to be much social distancing and there's no one to check the people sitting outside so I'm not too sure how safe that is. The vanilla latte is good. It's not too bitter and not too sweet. I'm not a huge coffee drinker since I think coffees are too bitter but I always see myself coming back for the vanilla latte here. read more

Grey cafe is by far my favorite cafe to go to when I need to get some work done. The atmosphere they established here is especially perfect for anyone who is looking to get studying done. I was able to get all my studying done over the course of a week because of how this cafe is run. Most tables have outlets, and they do have many outlets, making it much easier to stay a while without worrying about your devices dying. The music here is also not overwhelmingly loud which made it easier to concentrate as well. Now onto the best part -- FOOD. The food here is very good and they have many options so it doesn't get boring. My favorite item on the menu is probably the everything bagel with Italian cream cheese (5/5). I think I had this at least once each visit. It is so simple, Italian seasoning and cream cheese, who would've thought. Their teas are brewed very nicely and the peach iced tea (5/5) was extremely refreshing to wash the bagel down. The peach flavor is strong but not too sweet so it doesn't overshadow the earthy tea flavor. The cold brew (5/5) is very strong and kept me alive while I studied. The cold brew taste is very rich, but not as bitter has some cold brews Ive tried at other places. I would highly recommend if you like cold brews, it was very smooth and easy to stomach. Lastly, I tried their ham and cheese croissant (5/5). They warmed this up for me so the cheese was gooey, the ham was sweet and salty, the croissant was crisp on the outside and warm and soft on the outside. This is simple but absolutely scrumptious. Overall, Grey cafe is an amazing cafe, to meet all your needs. Food and drinks are top notch, the staff is incredibly friendly, free wifi and lots of outlets for those who need to study/get work done, and well decorated for cute dates and get togethers. 5/5, highly highly recommended. read more

I was a very loyal customer here, spending maybe $150-200 on DoorDash, until they screwed me over FOUR TIMES IN A ROW. And each time I was extremely polite and forgiving about it, but I'm fed up now and I'm done with them. First, they tell me that the chai latte is "dairy-free" when I explained I have a severe allergy, I order it, take a sip, and my mouth tells me something is wrong right away. I call back, ask if there's any nuts in it, and low and behold, there IS dairy in it. Great, it can kill me, but no big deal. In that same order, instead of 3 vegan tahini chunk cookies, they send me dairy peanut butter cookies I'm allergic to. So I can up and explain, and they tell me I can get three for free with my next order. So this morning I place an order for a coffee and include in the instructions I was owed the cookies, and they send them, and I SPECIFICALLY ASK IN THE INSTRUCTIONS for the bag to be STAPLED because I do not trust random DoorDash drivers after having my food tampered with before, so I call up and explain, and tell them this, they say "they can't do anything" until I ask if I can place another order for a cheap item and have them send it again. So I placed the order for a cheap $3 cookie, write down clearly that I'd like the coffee and the 3 cookies im owed... and they send me my order with only the coffee WITHOUT THE FUCKING COOKIES I ORDERED FOR IN THE FIRST GODDAMN PLACE. Fuck them, never ordering from here again. They're a bunch of snobby assholes that don't give a shit about their customers.
