I purchased a new folding knife valued at over $200. The blade was a tad dull, and I wanted the bevel re-profiled. After reading the reviews, and seeing that Greg has been sharpening knives for decades, I thought he would be able to make the desired adjustments. I brought my knife in, described that I was looking for a 40 degree bevel, and he seemed to know exactly what I was talking about. Greg took the knife into his workshop and I heard the sounds of a bench grinder. I should have ran back and stopped him then. He spent just a few moments grinding away before he brought the knife back out. He demonstrated that it could cut paper, but upon closer inspection the blade was basically ruined. The tip was rounded off, and the bevel was uneven. Not to mention it looked like it was sharpened on a cinder block. I was in shock. I paid him ($3.50), and thought to myself that I could fix it at home with the sharpening stones that I have. At home, I examined the knife further and realized so much material had been removed that it was beyond repair. I drove back to Gregs to determine what recourse I had. I politely explained that I was not satisfied, and the knife had been ruined. He took the knife back into his shop for more grinding (even after I asked him not to). I guess he wanted to just totally finish it off for me. At this point, I wanted my knife replaced, and I asked if he had any insurance to cover such events. He became agitated, told me he wasn't going to give me $200, and he threw my $3.50 down on the counter as to wash his hands of me. And that was that. End of discussion. I'm sure Greg can take great care of your lawnmower blade or other hard use tools, but knives require a more meticulous technique than a bench grinder. If you value your knives, I suggest looking elsewhere for sharpening. read more

Had Greg sharpen my entire knife block plus a few and he did a great job. Even made me a couple of copies of a key in almost no time. The cost was very reasonable as well. read more

I don't know why I put off getting my knives sharpened for so long! Greg knows his stuff and got all 21 of our knives sharpened within an hour and a half. I took four of my kitchen knives to Greg and he did a great job putting a new edge on them! $3.50 per knife and it's a little more for serrated blades. He did them while I ate lunch at Sanfilippos (about a 50 yard walk). It's a small family run place and Greg was very professional. read more

I bring my knives to Greg about every 3-4 months. It's like getting brand new knives every time. My wife loves it. It's a super convent storefront and Greg is great. Definitely recommend using him. read more

Greg is an upstanding business man. He is old fashioned: a man of integrity, honesty and kindness. He told me my late parents' set of knives I brought to get sharpened are worth over $1,000! They had been collecting dust for years, now I use them everyday and am so happy. He can sharpen just about anything. Please go see him! read more

My chef knife which I use all day every day happened to chip a couple days ago. It went about 1/16 of an inch into the steel. I was worried about getting it fixed and was recommended to go here to get it worked on. When I got in he looked at it like it was no big deal told me he'd be done with it in 30 minutes. 30 minutes later new edge. New tip. Nice polish all for $3.50 and a tip. This is now my go to spot to take anything I need sharpened. Quick, friendly, solid service. Will be back for sure. read more

Honest guy with good character. He wouldn't sharpen my knives which didn't need sharpening. The ones that did, are SUPER sharp...so sharp, he gave me Band-aids for when I cut myself. read more

We live in RB and after reading reviews, we went out of our way to give this guy a try. Best decision ever. In a nutshell, this guy knows his trade. And the lowdown? 7 dull kitchen knives brought to life for 24 bucks. And it was accomplished in 30 minutes. Just enough time to hit the downtown La Mesa area for a lunch and shopping. Couldn't be happier to support this guy. Thanks Greg! read more

Came in to sharpen 4 of my pocket knives and a bayonet. My pocket knives were duller than a butter knife and my bayonet though sharp, needed some fine sharpening. Tested them out on some paper and cardboard today and was happy to say that it cut through it like butter! One of my pocket knives i tried to sharpen myself also (before i had greg sharpen it) had a nick on it and greg straightened and resharpened it to a fine point. I would recommend coming to gregs sharpening service and will come back to sharpen more knives. read more

Very nice work, sharpened my blade and serrations to razor sharp. The knife had a coating on it and it was left in perfect condition. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and the prices beat every other place I called. It took about 15 minutes and I was on my way. read more

Greg will bring your dull knives that you thought were ready to be canned back to life. I had a couple knives that I didn't think could be taken care of with a stone, and in three hours Greg had them in brand knew condition. He's fast, and more than fair with his prices. Lets just say that I brought him a few knives so far and haven't hit the $20 mark yet. Give this little shop a shot and I'd be shocked if you didn't consider him your ONLY resource for putting a serious edge on your knives. read more

Shave sharp! Greg hooks up the kitchen knives and I even brought my jeep shovel, hatchet and pick.

This review was done 6 years ago on my wife's account... thought i would transfer it over here. Last Friday I had an important interview for a sushi chef position. i flew in the night before from sacramento and my knives were in pretty poor shape. The place i went to was closed on friday and thursday, something they didn't put on their website. it was 11 AM and my interview was at 4 PM. in desperation i went to Greg's Sharpening Service. My knives are my life, more so as a sushi chef then any other chef. i was extremely nervous about handling over my knives to a complete stranger. Greg assured me that he worked on sushi knives all the time. I showed him my 9 inch yanagiba that was bent from a mishap. Greg said he could make it true. I left him my knives and the trust of a sushi chef to a professional sharpener. i had scheduled another interview at 2 PM and my wife picked up the knives for me. Greg warned her to be careful since they were extremely sharp! once i had my knives back i inspected them closely. Greg did an amazing job. for 3.50 a knife plus polishing and no charge to correct the bend total came out to 21 bucks for all my knives. Money well spent for a bang up job. My wife told me greg said if i like his work, let people know. Here it is greg, thank you for taking care of my knives! read more

If you are even thinking about visiting Greg's shop,Do it. His work is awesome and the prices are great! Thanks Greg!

Greg and his wife are awesome!!! He does a really great job sharpening anything (knives and scissors in my case). They also sell cutlery and giftware. You will also walk out of the shop having learned something. Really friendly, professional, knows his stuff. Highly recommended!!! I will be taking my knives to be sharpened or repaired here for as long as I'm in San Diego county! read more

Greg did an amazing job sharpening a custom made knife on a very short notice. I will definitely come back with more blades.

Fast, inexpensive, and SHARP!!! I brought in 2 knives with broken tips. Not only did Greg re-shape the blades, he made them sharp enough to shave with. Only costed $9, only took 30 minutes. I will bring EVERYTHING with an edge to him until I die or move. read more

Owner of the shop knows his stuff and is very informative about the care and handling of knife sharping. Would go to him for now on.

I've had many knives sharpened here and Greg is the best! His prices are reasonable and service is excellent. Once I brought him an old hunting knife I found in my backyard, and he gave it such a sharp edge that I can use it as an all purpose kitchen knife. I broke the tip on my Wusthoff chef's knife and ground a new one. I highly recommend! read more

Great work and fast service. Read the reviews on Yelp and decided to try. Knives are good as new. Knives are expensive and a good sharpening when needed brings the joy back to my butcher block. read more

Blades keep their edge less with this particular sharpener. Mediocre results are all one expects here. read more

This is a small unassuming shop which might easily be mistaken for the bookstore next door. You have to look very carefully to enter the right door. Everything about this place is unassuming except the service which is spectacular! Knives are sharpened, artistically wrapped and return to you in almost no time at all or an incredibly reasonable price. The result is first-rate. Formerly, all my knives were sharpened in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood. So I was very leery about going to this shop which as I said is small and unassuming. However oh, I am so impressed with this man's work that I have gone to Yelp about it. Casual catering service, sharp sharp knives. read more

Took 2 pairs of kitchen scissors and a knife to sharpen, the service was fast! Pick them in less than 2 hours. Friendly service and great job. The scissors and knife work like new. read more

Great service! Friendly, and relaxed environment - I didn't feel judged for the dull state of my knives, or the fact that they weren't "brand name". Great prices, incredibly quick service (dropped off at 9:50a, and he said they'd be done in about 30 min... WOW!!) I will absolutely go back! read more

Fast. 1 minute to drop off. next day 1 minute to pick up. Sharp as hell, great experience and great prices.

Greg is the man. Took him 3 pocket knives and my cooking knife and he did wonders with them. Better than new and he charges a ridiculous low price. Also turn around time was quick, 30 minutes and that's only because he had a few to sharpen before mine. Will get all my business from now on. Thanks again read more

Consistent, reliable, professional, local, excellent quality each time - rare to find a business this great. Greg does an excellent job!

Greg does excellent work on what you bring in: knives, scissors (pinking shears!), garden tools, etc. This guy knows what is he doing, and will give you the straight scoop on your goods (worth doing, or replace). I highly recommend you come here! Make your life easier with sharp tools! read more

This guy is great! He sharpened up my Ka-Bar in about 10 mins. He put an edge on it that can split hairs. He even sharpened the clip on the spine of the knife, which if you have ever tried to sharpen that part of a Ka-Bar with a regular whetstone you know it can be a real pain. Bought a new stone and some oil also, great deal! I would suggest you go out of your way to this guy, he really knows his trade. read more

I signed up just to say Greg is awesome. I dropped off 4 knives before work and didn't have a chance to pick them up until the following morning. All 4 knives were shaving sharp, even a thick boot knife with a 1.5" blade. He reprofiled the edge on my Emerson from the chisel grind to a sharper V and backed up the relief a tad bit for a shallower angle. To top things off, while dropping the knives off, the meter lady came in to warn us about expired meters (nice of her) and Greg gave me a quarter for parking without hesitation. Very rare to find friendly business like this nowadays. I snagged a few business cards for friends and Greg definitely has one more repeat customer. read more

Gregg is a very through technician. Just picked up my 2 chef's knives ----Evenly honed, with very keen edges A-1 job on two heirloom handsaws. Just enough steel was filed. and the set was perfect ----they cut straight & fast. read more

After searching for a knife sharpening service a few months ago, I found Greg's place. It took me a month to finally get a Saturday off so I could go in. The reviews I saw last month were mostly favorable. When I checked this last Saturday, I saw the posting by Jared. I was somewhat concerned as I was planning to bring in several chef's knives and my trusty Kershaw pocket knife. So this last Saturday, my wife and I decided to go and see if we were comfortable leaving about $800.00 worth of knves to be sharpened. In addition to the Kershaw, I have 3 Shun knives, two with single bevels and a Hattori 8" chef's knife made from 63 layers of folded Damascus steel. One of my Henkel's,and my Ken Onion Shun, were beyond my ability to properly sharpen. I have been using my Chef's Choice 3 stage sharpener, but it has worn down the blade at the butt and no longer allows a proper rocking motion. I asked Greg about his experience with Jared, as I wanted to hear both sides. His explanation was, in my opinion, believable, so we decided to leave the knives and go on our way to do some shopping. The knives were done in about two hours. Greg explained to me that he had ground down the butt of the Henkel so that it could be used in a proper rocking motion. All of the knives are razor sharp. As anyone knows, a dull knife is far more dangerous than a properly sharpened one. What I took away from the experience is that Greg is a hard working person trying to make it in this economy. His prices are reasonable and his work is more than worth the cost of the sharpening. Now that a third of my knives are sharpened, I am looking forward to bringing the rest in. I truly recommend his place, the quality of his work, and the honesty I felt while there. read more

I'm a meat cutter and got some "hand me down" knifes. I looked up a sharpening place in San Diego and found Greg. A friend and I went to his shop and brought in 5 knifes and he only charged $3.50 for each! After grabbing a bite to eat he called and said they were ready to pick up already! He said they were so dull he even had to do some reshaping, with no extra costs. Also had a conversation about swords and weapons he has in his shop as well. 10/10 will definitely go back, its the perfect mom and pop shop everyone loves to see! read more
