I have to say, this is one of my favorite places. I'm just a hobbiest, not a professional. every time I go in, everybody there treats me with huge amounts of respect, gives me tons of information, and helps me figure things out. They are never put out when I'm asking a bunch of questions because I don't know what I'm talking about. To Top it off their prices are epically good. What an incredible business. I learned about them through the chamber of commerce. They hold a regular BBQ so we thought we would check it out. What they have done through the BBQ is create a really wonderful and smart community. Vendors come and showcase products while contractors and community members have a chance to meet and get to know one another. I know when I have my next big project or hear about a remodeling job I'll definitely look for a connection there! We went into the store and were impressed with how it's maintained its charming status and not sold out to the big guys. You feel like this is where the true workers go. You definitely have a sense of the expertise contained within the four walls and extended network. And boy is there lumber! I placed an order with Rick for a delivery of over $1700.00 worth of lumber. The entire time he was taking my order he kept looking at his watch as if I was keeping him from somewhere. I came back a day prior to the delivery and asked to add a few items to the order, and before even knowing what I wanted to add, he started whining....I felt as if I was a bother as opposed to a valued customer. I don't know how many times I have driven past this lumberyard with just a cursory glance. I never even really gave it much thought. But when I was searching online for some specialty lumber they were listed as having it in stock. I called, and got exemplary service over the phone. Then I paid a visit. I interacted with a half dozen different people and all were cheerful, friendly, and helpful. Long story short, I placed an order for delivery and got just as good of service from the order desk and the delivery personnel. Quality lumber and quality service. I brought an order into La Mesa Lumber for a custom cut 2 x 4; I wanted a cross cut and also needed it ripped diagonally. The miller that did the work was a real professional. I watched as he took my measurements, cut it to length, and then lined it up for the rip cut. The end product came out perfect. The next day, I called them to put in a good word for him and was told that he was actually born in a home on their property! I think that may qualify him as a "plank owner"... This is what a real lumber yard should be. Im a general contractor and after trying every other competitor out there, I won't shop anywhere else. They only sell professional high grade tools and hardware, quality brands of building materials and products in the store front. Their lumber selection is great, prices are fair, every employee there is helpful, knowledgeable, and most importantly has a genuinely good attitude. It is also a small family owned operation so I feel good contributing to that buy local concept rather than doing business with a huge corporation like home depot that has no regard for their employees or their customers. Overall great place for that hard to find size and type of wood. We are project builders and my newest vision called for 1x12 at 10 feet redwood. After looking at multiple stores I got the recommendation to check out La Mesa lumber. I called them up, they told me they had my wood and the price over the phone. Drove down and they told me what bay to drive over to. The kind worker (didn't get his name) showed me the ones they had. He helped me pick a great piece and even cut and loaded in my truck for me. Check out was super easy, and I was on my way. In and out in 10 minutes and everyone was super nice. Normally when I go to lumber stores and need one or two pieces I get overlooked and given weird prices based on some crazy formula based on the woods size. Not here, their pricing was clear and I didn't feel judged for not buying a full truck load of wood. Will be going back for my next crazy project! read more

The lumber I got was overall lower quality than expected - I ordered 20% more than needed and it still was not enough after discounting the bad cedar (meant for ceiling). When asking them to change some of it, they refused it invoking the 14 days policy. They refused even to throw in a deal on delivery. I understand they were covered by policies, but after all it was their lumber that brought me into this ... I would not recommend them. read more
