So clutch! I am thoroughly happy I chose to work Ahmad and Greenshield Insulation. tldr - Don't hire Greenshield if you have a whole house fan. We just finished having Greenshield remove our old insulation, air seal, sanitize, and install new blown in insulation. We talked with 3 companies, and Greenshield had the best price and best communication up front. They were the only one participating in the rebate programs. We rely on a whole house fan to cool our house at night. It pulls in air from open windows, pushes air from our living space into the attic and out the eve vents. Before we did the project I was worried that the vents could get blocked, so I called Ahmad and asked. He indicated there wont be any impact on the fan. He was wrong, our fans have lost most of their flow rate. Ahmad denied they did anything wrong and wouldn't help fix it, and only offered me $250. It's going to cost a lot more to fix this. The inspector that came for the rebate, says he sees this all the time. So either I have bad luck, or Ahmad is being dishonest. As part of the air sealing they patched a hole in my utility closet, but the workmanship was poor. The guy forgot his dry wall and his ladder, and used my ladder and dry wall. It looks terrible, but it's in my utility closet, so no one will see it. But the insulation does work very well, and has kept our house very cool during the recent heat wave. Despite my disappointment with the house fans, this was the main reason we hired them, and on this main aspect, they delivered. As for the rest of the air sealing, we did have a few spots where their expanding foam was visible from around light fixture in my home. It was easy to trim away, not a big deal. We learned about Green Shield through the PG&E BayRen rebate program. Green Shield is one of the vetted contractors in the program. We chose them because of all the great reviews here on Yelp. And the reviews are right --they were terrific and I highly recommend them, so I'm adding my own 5 star review! First of all, they quoted me half the price of of two other "attic" companies that I had called before I knew about the BayRen program. Seriously, don't go with those "attic" companies, you will be ripped off! Half of Green Shield's price was refunded to me by the rebate!! So in the end, instead of paying one of those "attic" companies $12k to insulate my entire house, I paid $3k with Green Shield after the rebate for the same exact work! Think about that -- using Green Shield saved me 3/4 off the "attic" companies' prices!!!! Anyway, they were very pleasant to work with. Ahmad was very communicative, and his insulation installers Parker and Dave were also very pleasant, professional, and efficient. They did the job in a half day, blowing insulation into the upstairs and downstairs attics of my house, and all of the exterior-facing walls (including the closets). They spackled all of the wall holes, but of course afterwards I had a painter come out to smooth it out and paint those walls. A few weeks after the job, an inspector from the BayRen program came out. A few weeks later we learned that we passed inspection, no problem. And a few weeks after that, we received our rebate check. Easy Peasy! Green Shield took care of all the paperwork, which was amazing! It was a messy process, having to move stuff away from walls and empty out some of our closets, but it was totally worth it! My house is so much more comfortable now. One thing I will mention -- if your house was built before 1980, have an electrician come out to inspect for knob-and-tube wiring. We had no idea that the downstairs of our house had knob-and-tube (the upstairs didn't so we assumed....). Green Shield won't insulate a house with knob-and-tube unless it is inspected and signed-off by a licensed electrician. Fortunately, our house was OK in this respect. Background Story: I was working in my garage replacing the sheetrock when I reached inside the wall cavity and discovered......NOTHING!?! Where's the insulation, to my disbelief the house I had just bought had no insulation at all in any of the walls. Tearing out the entire sheetrock throughout the house would be very costly, but that is when I heard about blown in insulation into the walls. Blowing in insualtion to the attic is pretty easy, but ripping apart your walls and blowing it into your wall cavity, well that's no picnic. You can try to do it yourself and Home Depot will even give you a machine for 24 hours to use, but after further research I found out that the machine they give you will not dense pack your cellulose insulation, it simply does not have enough pressure so the insulation will settle over time. Greenshield to the Rescue: After getting several quotes, Ahmad from Greensheild was able to beat out their competitors on pricing. He also assured me his guys would not cut corners and they would dense pack everything and also seal the wall holes and patch once they are done. When his guys arrived I told them my fears about rushing through this project as I really want each wall dense packed. The installer told me he has been doing this for 15 years and even has his own custom built tools for dense packing, he showed me exactly what he was doing. When he finished the first wall, he showed me how tight he got the insulation almost a R20 value for a 4inch wall depth and it was indeed DENSE PACKED!!! I was really impressed with Greenshield, they worked on my home for 10 hours that day. A project like this might have taken me a couple of weekends to complete. I bought my home almost 3 years ago, it was a flip but they didn't put any insulation into the walls... In the summer my AC couldn't even keep the house cooler than 80 degrees! Professionalism is the motto of Ahmad and his crew. From start to finish they were exceptional! We had 4 companies come give bids, and Greenshield was the winner of our business. I am very happy we chose them. We had over 3,000 sq ft of radiant heat barrier installed, the ceiling air sealed, and an additional 2,500 sq ft R-30 installed over existing insulation in attic. I'm a big Yelper, and was concerned after reading several of the Yelp reviews. I did follow up research about the "questionable business license" comments, and I could not find anything out of place or wrong. Their license was up to date, workers comp, insurance, everything was as it should be. I'm not sure what the problem was originally, but its good now. Ahmad came dressed in a clean uniform, ID badge displayed, and immediately handed me a business card after shaking my hand. Before coming into my home, he donned booties to keep my carpets clean. He had all his necessary gear ready to go (Unlike other companies that went back and forth to their vehicles to get ladders, etc). Ahmad had in depth knowledge about his products and what would work best for my home. I must admit, I did lie to him initially so that I could test his integrity. I did A LOT of homework prior to his arrival. I pretended to be an uneducated homeowner to see what he'd tell me and try to sell me. I was pleased by his no-pressure tactics. He was very polite, and always addressed me as Sir until I told him to call me by my name. His bid was not the cheapest. It was actually one of the most expensive. We absolutely got what we paid for. Worth every penny. We chose him because he listened to us during our consultation and worked with us to solve our problems (Several other companies talked down to us and tried to force products/ techniques upon us). He was professional and made me feel like he cared about doing a high quality job. Ahmad was here everyday during the project too. This was comforting. I knew I didn't have to re-explain the project to new people. Ahmad kept me up to date on the project's status. Thoroughly explained what they were doing, what they were using and why they were doing it. They worked long and hard. It was over 125 degrees up there all three days! Greenshield did the insulation at our house a few weeks ago and the process was excellent from beginning to end. Ahmed was responsive and extremely knowledgeable. He educated us and what we needed and even was upfront on a more expensive option we were exploring for our crawl space that led us to not spend as much as we thought we had to. They did our exterior walls, crawl space and refinished our attic which was under insulated. It's been about two weeks and we've run our heater over 30% less each week! He also shared more about the rebates we would be eligible for and filled out the paperwork for us, something the other companies I got quotes from did not inform us of. Again, yesterday, a door-to-door salesman from Greenshield showed up at my door. This is the third time since June. Telling them "no" seems to make no difference. This was a 50-ish male who really likes to talk and doesn't take "no" easily. He's also amazingly good at evading a question and not giving straight answers. Example: he claims they give a guarantee for the life of the house. Remember, they're supposedly only doing "free energy audits" so you have to wonder why he's so willing to talk about guaranteeing work done. When I pointed out to him that a house here might have a lifetime of 100 - 150 years, he tried to change the subject. When I asked him repeatedly if the guarantee was transferable to new owners, he evaded the question over and over again, trying to change the subject. When they were first here in June, I spent the time to do online investigation of the company and it's a bit worrisome and convoluted. Their website prominently displays license number #530223. Checking with California's contractor licensing board at https://www2.cslb.ca.gov/OnlineServices/CheckLicenseII/checklicense.aspx reveals several troubling things about that license. 1. The license is registered to "C&T Construction." 2. Business is claimed as a sole proprietorship with *no* employees and, therefore, *no* workers' compensation insurance. 3. Business owner is listed as Charles Arthur Husk, listed as residing in Pacifica, CA. 4. Business license address is 3868 STUEBEN CT, FREMONT, CA 94538 5. Googling the phone number listed (510.928.6360, not the same as Greenshield) with that business brings up a business address in Oakland, CA. - So, three different addresses. Notes and additional information on C&T Construction: I called the phone number and spoke to Charles "Chuck" Husk. I asked him how many employees he has and he said "three." I told him why I was asking (workers' comp insurance) and he said because the employees are his sons, they don't count for workers' comp. [I simply don't know the laws on that regarding relatives but do know that it's very risky to hire a company without workers' comp insurance on its employees. An injury suffered on your property becomes your responsibility if the worker is not covered by his/her employer's workers' comp.] - Mr. Husk says he does all the installation work for Greenshield. Note that Greenshield purports to only be doing "Free Energy Audits" and their solicitor dodged my question about what they were selling. Obviously, their purpose is to sell insulation, etc., and I assumed that but would much prefer a straight answer to my question. Also of note, Mr. Husk was speaking to me from Texas (cell phone). He said he's been there for about two weeks doing work for relatives. What that reveals is that Greenshield has obviously had no work scheduled for him during that entire two-week period. **Greenshield should not be displaying C&T Construction's license number as their own.** The Better Business Bureau, a service that has become increasingly irrelevant and uninformative, has very little information on Greenshield. Address listed in San Jose matches the business card. Record exists since 8/16/2011 *Principal - Ahmad Baballah* I also found mention elsewhere of a "Greenshield" with a Morgan Hill address but now that license number shows "inactive"; not authorized to do business. Note: I asked Mr. Husk about the name, Ahmad Baballah, and who owns Greenshield. He said there are three owners: "Ahmad, Sam, and Abraham." Because I'd also checked Ahmad Baballah's Facebook page, I asked Mr. Husk how old Mr. Baballah is. Mr. Husk says he'd estimate him at about 24 years old. That fits with the impression I got from the FB page. Summary: Greenshield has no track record of its own and they're prominently displaying someone else's license number on their website. http://mygreenshield.com/ It seems to me that it would be far wiser to do business with an established company that's more likely to be in business next year if problems arise. I suspect they have little or no assets if a liability situation were to arise. There are legitimate energy audit companies that charge for their audits because they do not sell products or services beyond the audit which theoretically makes their reports more reliable as they do not have a vested interest in the outcome of the audit. This is consistent with the CA code http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=bpc&group=07001-08000&file=7195-7199. Section 7197 states: (a) It is an unfair business practice for a home inspector, a company that employs the inspector, or a company that is controlled by a company that also has a financial interest in a company employing a home inspector, to do any of the following: (1) To perform or offer to perform, for an additional fee, any repairs to a structure on which the inspector, or the inspector's company, has prepared a home inspection report in the past 12 months. read more

We used Greenshield some time back (before the Sept 2012 reviews on Yelp), believing that they were an approved contractor/rater of the Energy Upgrade California program (they aren't; see: https://energyupgradeca.org/euc_approved_contractors). They came and did an energy audit of our home, which was marginally useful (I followed them the entire time), and then gave us a sales pitch on their radiant barrier insulation product, which we declined. We asked them to leave their written quote, which they refused to do. As Randy R.'s research and the Energy Upgrade California website indicates (see: https://energyupgradeca.org/news/phony_telemarketing_calls-3558), Greenshield is one of many companies using "energy audits" as a pretext to make sales pitches for installing insulation or other products. Greenshield seems to have removed the questionable state contractor's license number from their website that Randy R. noted, but the website itself is in disrepair (several links are broken, and some of the pages don't load properly), and I have little doubt that they're still up to the same old tricks. read more
