My experience with Atticcity on our 40+ year attic insulation was GREAT from start to finish! David was the first to respond to my initial inquiry after several generic 'estimates' over the phone. The first indication I had that made me feel a sense of honesty and integrity was David's approach to estimating the square footage of my project. I had measured and estimated about 1,800 sq ft but David used current technology to get a more realistic size and said it was 15% less than my estimate. He was fair and quick over the phone and by text and submitted his formal proposal via email for me to review and sign. Quick response is key to me in judging how the job experience will be. Other contractors were still calling me after two days to send an estimator out to look at my project. On job day, David's team arrive ready and eager to get to work. David sent his guys out to our home in Redwood City several months ago. The good: they came quickly after we agreed on terms, they left the house clean, and their quote was competitive. The bad: they didn't insulate the garage bathroom as discussed, and despite the quote including air sealing, they did not seal around the many slim (and insulation rated) "recessed" lights that are in our ceiling. In David's defense, he did return himself to do some of the air sealing, but underestimated how much hadn't been done and promised to send his guys back at a time that was convenient for them. That was 3 months and multiple check-ins ago. The frustrating: the company does not respond to text or email (but does do a pretty good job answering the phone, especially when I call from a local area code), they promise things (i.e. to show up) and don't follow through. We made the mistake of paying before we realized that not everything had been done. If you know a lot about attic insulation and air sealing, and you are happy to crawl up into the attic and look at their work, then Atticity could be fine. But if you're new to this, or relatively hands-off, I'd look for someone who communicates better and is better organized/able to follow through. Update: I had a phone call within an hour of this review, and a return visit within a day. They insulated the garage bath, and sent a guy to unearth unsealed lights. We constantly had to turn on the heater and our electricity bill was just crazy. I knew I had to get new insulation. He came the next day to give me an estimate They started work the following Tuesday (less than a week). It took 3 guys and 2 half days to finish the attic and crawlspace insulation. Aug/2018 I lost track of this review and coming back to update. Edward did come back after recovering from a long illness. Unfortunately he had to start his business from scratch again. He came back to fix/work on the following: - Fixed both the non-functioning attic fans. It was because of a breaker switch that I should have noticed. - Reviewed the attic work done by him. It is still impeccable after 2 years. - Did a thorough research on crawlspace encapsulation and put a proposal. Given his delicate health condition, we agreed not to move forward. I do plan to call him every year to do a maintenance inspection, and would recommend him highly. I still keep the rating at 4, because health issues still require good/timely communication. Oct/2017 As much as I liked Edward's work, I have to bump down rating because the work is left incomplete. Sealing the moisture barrier was pending. I sent multiple reminders to Edward. He fell sick for a while and no response after that. Now I need to find someone else to complete the work. Moreover, at least 1 set of pipes installed by Edward to take rain water to the street came off and need to be re-installed. ++++++ I somehow lost track and forgot to update the review. Edward did come back immediately afterwards and reviewed the whole crawlspace. It did not help that the surrounding area was feeding water into the crawlspace after the rain. So he ended up doing multiple things: - Get the rainwater away from home - Build the pipes to take water to the street - Put a sump pump in the crawlspace. adjust the leveling so that water getting in the crawlspace flows towards the sump pump In the last weeks, it rained quite a bit again. I checked the crawlspace frequently and there is no water accumulation anymore. What is pending is to re-seal the moisture barrier. ++++++ Jan/2017 I requested Edward to come and check the crawlspace multiple times after recent rains. No response. Today I checked it myself and unfortunately there was way too much water after the recent rains. I at least expected Edward to mesg me back or call me. That way I could have checked myself and avoided any damage (if at all) to the crawlspace. I actually find our experience with Edward pretty funny! We had gotten quotes from 4 different companies, and in the end my husband and I decided to go with Edward and his team. He promised he would come by with his "best" guys the next morning and it would take two days to do the work. He called the morning of, cancelled due to his guys not wanting to work in the rain.... sounded extremely odd and unprofessional!
