We used their services about 10 years ago (2015) to insulate our attic. Now, as I am working with a roofing company, the project manager told me that the insulation needs to be replaced because it is barely 2 inches high. He also offered to do it for about $5.6K. Just to seek another opinion, I called Universal. They looked into the attic and said that there is no need to add any additional insulation since it is almost 10 inches thick in all places except where people moved around to inspect the attic. They shared the photos of the current state of insulation in my attic too. I liked the honest estimate of "no need to update the attic insulation." Nick, the estimator, came out to my house because my attic was getting unbearably hot. He spent a full hour carefully inspecting both the attic and the outdoor soffits, and managed to diagnose a problem that had completely eluded more than a dozen contractors I'd had out over the years (HVAC, roofing, attic specialists--you name it). After crawling deep into attic nooks & crannies, Nick identified that my soffit intakes were blocked by wood at the eaves, which explained the ventilation issue. No one else had taken the time or had the expertise to catch this. Other well-meaning contractors had suggested solutions like attic fans, but those wouldn't have addressed the real problem that Nick finally diagnosed. On top of that, the owner, Marko, personally spent another 30 minutes with me on the phone walking through potential roofing solutions. Any time you do home improvements, its always recommended you get multiple bids for the job. In this case, we got three bids to compare and 100% satisfied that we worked with Universal Insulation. For years, our bedroom walls would feel moist during the winter months when its cold out and the heater is blasting in the house. This is the perfect recipe for mold to develop on the walls, especially behind furniture. Every spring, we've been pulling our furniture away from the walls in the bedroom to scrub/bleach the surface mold build up due to the lack of insulation in our walls, plus maintaining a temp in the house during the winter time put our heater into overdrive, which also meant paying a higher PG&E bill. We met with Gonzalo who was prompt/on time, kept his mask on, was clear with his communication, answered all of our questions, educated us on things other contractors failed to do, and pulled multiple outlets off of the walls to scope for insulation while showing us his findings in real time. They are a participating contractor in the BayREN Home+ program (google this program). Universal Insulation's bid came back thousands of dollars lower than other competitors since they essentially get to keep the rebate if your house/work qualifies. The day of the actual work was being done, the workers (Marko, AJ and another guy) introduced themselves and told us what they'd be doing through every step of the install. We had blown cellulose in the attic and exterior/interior walls. Yes, there were over 50+ holes drilled into the exterior walls but they did a great job patching each hole after the insulation was blown in. They attempted to clean up what they could, but that stuff is messy. In the end, we were pleased with the communication, the rebate program, the costs, and service. I won't know how much the insulation has effected our pg&e bill until a full year/seasons have past, but we could already feel the difference in the house. His inspection was thorough; he walked our attic for maybe 10 minutes (taking many photos) and checked our walls for insulation. He explained why adding loose fill over our existing (very old) loose fill was the most cost-effective approach. We saved considerable money by not having the old insulation removed and the attic disinfected. The credit from Bayren was already deducted from the quote so the homeowner doesn't need to wait for the rebate check. The installation crew was on time and took care not to leave any mess. I got three quotes for re-insulating the attic of our 2900sq.ft home. I was clear that we wanted to upgrade our R30 batts to meet Energy Star recommendations, and also qualify for BayRen rebates. Only Universal Insulation listened to our request, spent a long time in the attic examining the situation, and quoting me a solution that was less than HALF the cost of the other quotes and achieved the desired level of insulation. The other two vendors quoted us R39 batts, admitting that it wouldn't achieve what we wanted, and then added radiant heat barriers, attic cleaning, and attic sealing that I was clear I didn't want or need. The final test is "does it work"? and early indications are that it's already made it possible to pre-cool our house to 70deg (previously we couldn't get it below 75deg when it was hot outside). I am anticipating the winter will be equally good! Finally, Universal Insulation took care of the rebate application, and I was not surprised when Elem3nts (the designated inspector) said that Universal Insulation always does an excellent professional job. read more

The project received 5 quotes and I picked Universal Insulation even they are not the lowest bid. Mario stop by did the estimate of the project. He did the measurement thoroughly, and also provided me with Pros and Cons on different way to handle my 2 stories house. On attic, he did not over sell me the insulation but suggested me to keep the current insulation and add some more new material on top, this way it will have better thermal performance without unnecessary works to save me lots of money. Also he suggested me to add a cover on attic ladder to keep the house sealed. The crew show up on time for both days of the 2 days project. They were very professional on their work. The result is awesome! I was so lucky to pick Universal Insulation. Based on the result of their work, my house feel cooler on the hot days: outside 85F and inside 72F. In the afternoon, my west side room used to be the same as outside or higher if I closed the door in order to have my con-call before the insulation, now it is only 74when outside is 88F. We hired this team to complete our attic and wall insulation. Things that I loved about them - 1. They give you the $1.5K Bay-Ren rebate upfront - so I don't have to deal with Bay-ren. 2. Use blown in cellulose instead of fiber glass. This is a superior product in terms of self air sealing. 3. Drill only 1 inch holes in the wall and patch them ready for paint. Getting insulation blow into exterior walls of a ranch style home built in 1957. Install was quick, but loud! Be sure you're gonna go somewhere if you don't like drills hammering through stucco. After insulation, interior temps dropped by 10degrees on average, more on really hot days. So glad we did this. Marko came out to give a quote. Worth every penny. I've never lived in a house without insulation. The concept didn't even occur to me that there wouldn't be insulation in the exterior walls. Right? How could that be possible? Our house was built in 1965. It sounds like there was a building code change after 1965 that required insulation in the exterior walls. So, we did the blow in wall insulation. These guys are legit. Gonzalo showed up a few minutes early for my initial estimate and review and I wanted him to look at the walls and attic space and crawl space. Very professional. Attic had insulation from the previous owner. He said the the type and height were all good and the crawl space could be done, but not a good value for the cost to do the work. So we just did the exterior walls. The estimate comes through with a nice online platform that you can review and approve and then get a call to schedule you installation date. Very slick and easy to use. AJ and Marko did the install. Awesome guys and walked me through everything and the paperwork for the rebate. Good quality work. You can do the wall insulation from the e outside or inside of the house. We did the outside. It's a little messy, so outside is best. When they're done, it'll look like your house has been involved in a drive by shooting (they drill holes between the stud cavities to pump in the insulation and patch after). Also if you have an older house like us, you may have some nail pops in the drywall after. So a little patch and paint may be required after they complete. Painting is done by the owner or you can hire a painter. It'll take only an hour or so to go through and touch up all the spots after the patch cures. I have a home built in the 1950s. Most homes of that vintage have no insulation in their walls. My poor daughter's room is where we particularly notice this in the winter with the cold and the summer with the heat. We had previously had another company come out and do blown in cellulose in the attic which helped some. Universal Insulation came out and filled the walls of my daughter's room with cellulose plus the rest of the house for which we hadn't already opened up the walls (a little less than half of my 2000 sq ft house). The price was $1.50 per square foot with a minimum charge of $650 and the total came to about $650. The team came out on a rainy morning and pumped the walls full of cellulose through the stucco on the outside of the house. It's a pretty neat process. The workers did not need to come into the house at all. No mess on the inside and very very minimal mess (little bit of cellulose on the ground) on the outside. It took the team about half a day to fill the walls and patch the stucco. I'll have to paint the little stucco patches but no big deal once the rain goes away (I'm thinking this will be a 1-2 hour job for lazy me). The results: A+ for quality and value. It has been about a month since the installation. My daughter's room is consistently 3-5 degrees warmer throughout the night and day as measured through her baby monitor and retains heat longer after the furnace turns off. The house overall is retaining heat much more evenly throughout the different rooms and we've been able to turn our thermostat down 1-2 degrees to 66 or 67 for the night (it would be even lower but we have a newborn who doesn't sleep with a blanket). Based on this and the fact that the house just feels better we are giving Universal A+ for quality, value, and making the process incredibly easy and pain free. read more

I highly recommend Universal for their excellent work at an unbeatable price (more on that below). I hired them to increase our attic insulation. Marko, the owner, discussed the options and recommended blow-in insulation. He also tapped on all the interior walls of the house and said we didn't need to insulate them, because they had already been done to code. He supervised the worker as the job was done. The resulting insulation looks very neat and uniformly deep, like a single, smooth blanket, with nowhere for heat to leak across the barrier. They even insulated the access hatch to the attic. Marko took a photo of the attic before the job, showing where we have walkways along the joists. He hung the photo on a rafter by the entry hatch, in case anyone needs to use the walkways in the future -- a brilliant idea. They protected our home with drop cloths under the blow-in tube, and vacuumed thoroughly when the job was done. Universal did the paperwork for the Bay area Regional Energy Network's (BayREN) efficiency upgrade rebate of $1000. They subtracted this expected rebate from the up-front cost of the job, which cut our invoice in half. We acquired a new house in Fremont and I reached out to 3 insulation companies to check the insulation we have in the attic, crawlspace and outside facing drywalls to determine if we need to do anything to make our home more energy efficient. The first two companies gave me a laundry list of items that we need to do, with projected costs ranging from 7K to 10K USD.
