Marko with Universal Insulation is knowledgeable, professional, and honest. After meeting with several other insulation installers, we decided to hire Universal to install R-44 blown cellulose insulation in our attic. The team showed up on time, laid drop clothes from the front door to the attic entrance and took great care running the hose around our walls and furniture. The process itself was surprisingly fast and quiet (compared with our experience having the old insulation removed by another company which took all day and was SO loud). We had been burned recently by a contractor who did a shoddy job in a part of the house we don't access very often (the crawlspace), so we made a point of checking the attic before Universal's installation team departed. R-44 is supposed to be 12" deep. We found that the insulation was not that deep near the attic entrance, so the team ran their hose back up and added more without a fuss. They also added a few cardboard rulers throughout the attic so we could see from a distance that the depth was accurate. Marko even gave us a call afterward to confirm that he had counted the insulation packages to make sure the correct amount was added. Good service with a surprise! During my recent renovation, I learned that my house had no wall insulation at all. As I'm such a green person, yes, my electricity is 100% renewable (through santa clara utilities), I decided to call a few places to get some insulation quote. Universal's price was good and I preferred cellulose than glass fiber (largely by reading online articles that are probably written by the cellulose industry). Kevin came out to my house and did an quote on the spot based on the square footage. In hindsight I probably should have tried to haggle a bit, but I wanted it done soon. The crew of 2 came on time and started right away. The drill noise was loud but at least it was fairly quickly done. They did their due diligence poking around. I noticed that they didn't drill above the windows in the back and their answer was that it's solid wood because they tried to drill around 2 windows and both were like that. But they did drill above the windows in the front of the house, so I'm not so sure about it now. They cleaned as they finished filling the holes in the wall and they were finishing up fairly quickly. The best part was that they were so considerate to water one of my tree with dose of freshly brewed urine. I wonder how did the guy know that that particular tree was actually in need of watering/fertilization. I almost thanked him because he save me the trouble of pissing on it myself. After they left, I checked on the attic insulation. They did baffle the canned lights as promised, although I was hoping that they'd offer to put some cover even if it cost a bit more. The insulation was not level, they put quite a bit more over the bedroom and a lot less near the central heat duct. Maybe it's a legal thing? Overall I'm happy with the job. I will rate this firm 5 stars just for Kevin's honesty and integrity (their work was good too). I knew I needed attic insulation upgrade because I could see that the existing blown-in insulation was pretty low. I called three of the top 5 star reviewed companies near my area before calling Universal. Each of them tried to up-sell thousands of dollars worth duct replacement work because there was asbestos in the boot. I did some online research and found that unless they were in friable condition(which they were not), they posed no risk. These firms also were recommending batt insulation even though blown-in provides better attic insulation. I later realized this was so that they could include another $2000 worth cleaning of the existing insulation. Kevin gave me the most sensible advise - to just add more blown-in insulation on top of the existing insulation saving me thousands of dollars. He also reassured me that the asbestos in the boots don't pose any risk in their present condition. The workers arrived on the scheduled date and finished the work in a couple of hours. But be sure that you over-communicate and double check things with them. They did not place a batt wall around the hole in the ceiling above the furnace closet even after I had asked one of the workers to do so. Luckily I spotted it before they had sprayed all over that portion of the attic and got it taken care of. read more

Totally impressed how professional this company was when I got the insulation done in my house. We had a little issues were the sheet rock didn't have enough screws in it from the prior owner and when they used the equipment to pump and the insulation from the outside of my home it caused a big crack under my window but they totally took care of it down to texturing and painting . Marko made it look like nothing ever happened. Also after setting up the appointment to the job being completed just took a couple business days and the customer service and liability was not even stressful it was the best decision I've made. After the work was completed our walls were much warmer I didn't have a moisture content from being so cold outside And the heater going inside will always cause cold moisture on the walls but now that's all gone. These folks did my attic and blow-in back in 2009, so I called them to see if they would be able to bid on my floor. Marko explained that floor insulation is rarely worth it, and that since I was also having problems with drafts through the floor insulation wouldn't solve that. They are careful and patient. They opned the holes on the exterior wall and blow in the insulation then patched the wall. And they've also cleaned all the spots after. The BEST insulation ever! This is my second time hiring them. The first time with our first house and now this new house. My house was so cold, but after it was warm. Before I hired Kevin again, my husband called another place because it was a 4 years gap since we hired Universal and wanted to compare other options if there are any cheaper and better quality. Wrong! Stick to Universal Insulation. They do work with a heart and honesty is their policy. We had a few rat poop in the attic and the other company told me to remove everything because I had rat infested poop up there and showed me pictures of it (which I later found out there wasn't much because my husband climbed up to check). Kevin said my attic was clean and there wasn't much installation needed like the other attic company that try to up-sell me saying I needed to put insulation on the ground and through the walls. I only needed in my attic like Kevin suggest and it worked! I was confused over fiberglass vs cellulose, but after all the crazy research I went with cellulose just like my last house and Kevin's recommendation. He may not look professional, but he does the work. The other guy came in with gears and all, but try to scare you with fake pictures from other people's attic that shows rat infested poop! Be careful what those other company tells you because they are lying. You have to climb up the attic to look for yourself because some of them trick you with pictures that aren't from your house mixed in there. Good thing, my husband was willing to climb up there. The work was OK but be sure that you are present and monitor that everything is done perfect the first time because you won't get it fixed later. The good: I scheduled an appointment and Kevin showed up on time. He also promptly sent a quote. The crew showed up on schedule too. The price was surprisingly fair. The bad: I had to leave so I left them insulating the house. The house was built in 1959 so there was no insulation in the house. They insulated the back (South) wall and the East wall. The crew also insulated the West wall, at last part of it. They insulated from the back up to the fence/gate. The distance from the gate to the front of the house was skipped. They drilled 3 holes in the front but clearly didn't insulate the wall. This is VERY odd since the rest of the house, including areas that were remodeled, didn't have insulation and the front had never been touched. Combine that with the area skipped on the West side and I am skeptical about the claim that it was insulated (details below). In addition, they didn't prime the holes as specified on the quote. The stucco patch looks good but the wood clearly isn't primed. I called Kevin, he returned my call the next evening and left a voice message that the wall was insulated so they skipped it. He also said that they were going to deduct it from the bill. I called back and left a message that we needed to talk because they skipped part of the West wall, didn't prime the patches, and as a result I am skeptical about the front wall. Kevin didn't call back. I called a 2nd time and again left a message. AGAIN, no call back. They eventually sent the bill. It arrived over 2 weeks after the work was done. They had adjusted it for the reduced area but it is very slow in arriving. That wouldn't be a problem if there wasn't a 30 day limit for submission of the rebate request to PG&E. Summary: Overall I think that they did reasonable work BUT I would recommend that you be present and monitor all of the work. DO NOT expect them to correct any errors because they won't respond to you again. PLUS, be prepared to process any PG&E claim very quickly on your end because they will not get you the billing information promptly so you can make the deadlines. read more

This company was very thorough and professional, beginning with Kevin coming to quote. I called several companies to get quotes on wall and attic insulation since I was not sure if our walls had insulation and figured the attic could use an upgrade. We recently bought our home as an REO so we got no info and since our home was built mid 70s, wall insulation was possible, but not guaranteed. Anyway Kevin came in, took a look in the attic, educated me on what we had and what we could do. He even told me to take incense and walk around all the light vents and door jams to see where there are other leaks. Kevin then also asked to see a closet that faced an exterior wall. He had a tool that made a 1/2 inch hole through the drywall to see if there was insulation in the walls. For sure there was, very obvious when you can see it right there! Then Kevin patched the hole with a little plug, and instantly wrote up a quote for attic insulation only. Not only did he write up the quote right away, but he educated me on all the rebates we would qualify for, giving me a quick instruction sheet to keep. I had other companies come to quote. Only one other even tried to check our walls and his method was taking off an electrical outlet cover and squeezing a wire with tiny hook between the electrical box and the drywall. He banged it around in there hoping to catch a piece of insulation in his hook. Not as effective a method as Kevin's. So when I hired Universal to insulate the attic, they were quick (2 hours) and clean. They laid down drop clothes everywhere they were walking and routing the tube and they even swept up my house afterward. Very happy and the difference with the new attic insulation was noted the first night. Such a noticeable change just in how the upstairs felt much less how much energy we saved not having to heat. read more

This is a 10 stars business. Probably the best in California. They are very honest, will give you best advice. I had insulation installed once, it was great. A year after I got a water leak that damage my ceiling with a lot of insulation. They accommodated a time to come back to assess the situation, and gave me a couple of bags of insulation for no charge so I can fill up the empty area in my attic. We had a portion of our walls and attic insulated with Universal through Sandium. They worked quickly and left the place really clean. The outside was spotless after the wall insulation and they broom-swept the house after the attic, so I still vacuumed with a hepa filter afterwards, because dust... They actually found I had insulation in some of the walls so they refunded some of the money. Yay! I had to communicate this with Sandium myself because it had slipped through the cracks, but all in all I'm really happy with the company and the work they did. read more

I got the outer walls of my 50 year-old house insulated using cellulose insulation. Kevin and Kline (yes, I know, :-)) arrived promptly at 9 AM as scheduled and got the work done by 1 PM without taking a lunch break. The work was done efficiently and with minimum noise. A portion of the house did have insulation (as part of an upgrade to a couple of rooms) and when this was discovered (by them drilling holes) they took measurements and said that I would be sent an amended bill to take into account the reduced work. Overall, I'm really happy with the work done. The improvement in the insulation in my house is just great. Not only is the the house warmer in the winter but the outside sounds have been reduced because of the added insulation. My amended bill was about $840/- for a 1340 sq. ft house. PG & E rebate was about $420! I'd highly recommend wall insulation to anyone living in an older house and Universal Insulation & Building. BTW, I did get a second estimate for this and their price was almost $900/- higher than UI & B. read more

Their rep gave the quote then they were able to schedule the work for the following week. Our walls had NO insulation, but our attic was fine so we had the walls insulated to R-13 (for PG&E rebate). The crew showed up on time, and they were great with my young child (who was VERY curious about the holes in the house and the process of sealing the holes, etc). When they tell you to be diligent about sealing around every wall outlet, window sill, gap, nook and cranny that could let in even the slightest draft, BELIEVE THEM. I was totally anal about it, and the house came out just fine. However, I didn't even think about sealing anything out in the garage, and we had bits of cellulose fluff dancing around the garage for weeks. You do NOT want that mess in your house! The only thing I didn't like was the cigarette smoke that wafted into the house occasionally, and a few cig butts I found in my driveway afterward. But, the work was done on time and I am happy with the results. The smoke/butts is the only reason they did not get five stars from me. The hardest part for me was finding a few child-free hours to paint the sealed holes after the work was done. :) read more

Just got my house insulated by Universal today. Yes, it'll take a while to see how much it helps my heating and cooling, but they did the extra things that made me want to write this review. The job: This was for external wall insulation only on my stucco-sided home. 1350sq ft house, cost was $1257 (can get 3% discount for cash), and they say I'll get about a $600 rebate from PG&E. So net I'd be out about $650. The good: After I had him come out and quote, I noticed my newly remodeled bathroom had no ceiling insulation. I asked them if I could have that done at the same time. He first suggested he could quote the ceiling area but after I explained the rest of the ceiling insulation was fairly new he said to just tell the 2 workers about it and give them an extra $20 each and they'd do it. Seemed well worth it. When Kevin and Keith (or maybe it was Kline) showed up, I mentioned how there's a void between my walls and my fireplace chimeney and there's nothing I could do about that yes? He said, no they can fill that, and just did, no extra charge. They also redid my attic access hatch's insulation without me asking. Not bad eh? What else: Aside from that they were nice guys, and the whole thing took about 5 hours (plus 1/2 hr or so for lunch.) The process is fairly noisy if you're in the house and you will find a few little wisps of insulation around the outside of the house even though they do clean up. They patch the walls and put a textured paintable top coat, but don't paint them. That makes sense as it takes 2 days for the patches to dry (and during the quote they made it clear that was the plan.) Keith even patched a hole on request that my fence had made in my stucco. One thing that hadn't been mentioned is they use your 220V electrical for their insulation machine (plugged into my dryer's plug.) Not a problem, but it does make you hesitate to leave home while they're working. Note that Keith is also a painter, so you could probably get him to come back and pain the holes if you wanted (didn't ask, its easy to do myself.) I tipped them $20 each (beyond the $20 extra mentioned above) as I was impressed with them overall. read more

I have two rooms facing south that heats up in the summer and freezes in the winter. I lived and accepted that for over 10yrs. Until recently I thought insulation involved tearing down interior walls to install rolled insulation. Then I found out the method of blowing cellulose fibers into the walls. I got all the exterior walls insulated. They come and hammer about 1 inch holes at the top and bottom and blow R13 insulation. Then patch the holes. The painting is your responsibility as expected so know your paint colors. Be warn there's going to be a lot of patch holes. The outcome is truly amazing. The whole place is a consistent temperature. When it was in the high 80s last week the two rooms were perfect like the other rooms. I'm a believer and preach this new found insulation knowledge! read more

They told me that they messed up with another job with the same first name and $ amount and on the same day. Rescheduled next week.
