We've seen the tree farm from the highway as we've driven by hundreds of times and thought we'd go by one day to check out what sort of supply they offer and what types of trees they sell. Because we didn't have a specific reason for buying a tree there I did feel a bit judged. Almost like we shouldn't have been there unless they were already expecting us with an order to pickup or something. Didn't seem super friendly. I would give it another chance for when we eventually are ready to buy a citrus tree, but felt fairly unwelcome overall. One good thing was the citrus that they had for sale in bins. It was cheap and very good quality. The blood oranges were nice. read more

Recently I decided to remodel my backyard and wanted to add some citrus trees to it. My local nursery that I usually get stuff from didn't have any available and recommended Greenfield Citrus nursery as they offer a wide variety of citrus plants that are locally grown here in Arizona. Unlike a lot of other places that carry citrus trees these are grown here using Arizona soil. That's a big plus for when they get transported and planted, they have a better success rate of growth while other citrus trees from different states such as California or Oregon have different expectations for them when it comes to soil & growth and not used to this dry heat I called previously to see about availability and the shop owner was able to put the item on hold for me. When you're planning your pick up, it needs to be done before 1 PM so I managed to get there just before noon and was pleasantly surprised to find a wide variety of citrus trees that were there. I called ahead to ask about it available as not too many places had what I was looking for. We talked about what to expect from the citrus tree as far as height, growth plan, properly digging the hole, watering and everything you could imagine which was perfect and most importantly I was provided a summary sheet on how to go about maintaining a fruitful tree. This is the type of experience I look forward to when I am branching out into the unknown. Someone who is knowledgeable helpful and not just looking to make a cash sale but really looking to see that these plants and trees thrive in their environment. Staff was great and even upon leaving told me that if I had any questions to feel free to give her a call. 5 stars to quality of trees and knowledge and instructions for caring for trees. This is truly a wonderful place. However, I'd like to deduct a star or two for confusion and lack of communication. Please be aware that you can place an order for trees that aren't yet in stock. I purchased a Cara Cara navel about a month and a half ago. The tree is beautiful, healthy, and better quality that I was seeing in citrus trees at other stores. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase and I hope to purchase from here again. I was looking for a navel and grapefruit tree. I asked at that time when I bought the navel when they would have grapefruit trees available and was told in 3 to 4 weeks. The lady suggested checking back with them then. A couple weeks later I called to get a status update and was told it would be another week or two. The following week I called again and the lady I spoke with said they weren't ready yet but she could give me a call back when they were. She took my name but not my phone number so I figured she had caller id. However, I made a mental note to call back the next week to check in again just in case. The next week I called back and spoke to another lady. She told me my name was on a waitlist for a pink grapefruit. I was surprised because the previous week I was neither told I was being put on a waitlist nor that I was on a list for a specific variety. I asked what varieties they have. She mentioned Oro Blanco so I asked if I could be put on the waitlist for that instead of the pink. Just now I received a call back that they do not have an Oro Blanco for me this season and I can check back in the fall. She mentioned they released my pink when I switched to the Oro Blanco and that I wasn't on a waitlist but rather I had placed an actual order and they had started taking orders in February. At this point I became perplexed by the whole process. I wasn't told I had placed and order nor was I told any of the earlier times I spoke to them that placing an order (especially one for a specific variety) was an option. I would have placed an order the previous month when I bought the navel or even on one of my earlier phone calls if I had been told that was an option. I told her I had started inquiring about grapefruit about a month ago to which she responded that people have been calling since the fall and that they started taking order at the end of February (around the time I bought the navel). I believe the point she was trying to make was that people had started calling and ordering long before me which is why they didn't have one for me. I understand that. But I don't think she understood the point I was trying to make -- that they didn't communicate the ordering process to me. If they were already taking orders when I started inquiring then they should have explained that process to me so that I, too, could place an order. Then I would have been higher up on the list. Purchasing a grapefruit was clearly my intention. Additionally, I had been in the previous year inquiring about grapefruit trees. It was my first time there and I was mainly doing research, not ready to purchase yet. I asked what specific varieties they had but the lady told me to contact them when I was ready to purchase and they would let me know what varieties, if any, I could choose between. It sounded like variety was second to availability when purchasing a tree which is part of the reason placing an order for a specific variety threw me for a loop this time and why it didn't even occur to me to ask about available varieties the first few times I spoke with them. Ultimately, it was more important for me to get the tree as soon as possible than it was to get a specific variety. So I'm annoyed that I probably could have gotten a grapefruit tree f I hadn't changed my order but I realize that was my mistake. I wonder if I could have said first available (I'll have to ask when I call back in the fall). Basically, I feel that the communication at each step of this whole process could have been much, much better which likely would have meant me being able to get the tree. I'm quite disappointed since I'm feeling a lot of pressure to get trees for my food forest in the ground asap. The navel is for my husband; the grapefruit was supposed to be for me. read more

A great place very dedicated to growing good disease free fruits. Citrus, dates, etc.

I am feeling conflicted. Jeff and I really wanted an Orlando Tangelo tree to finish off our citrus grove. I found two available at the Greenfield Citrus Nursery in Mesa. I purchased one and even bought a mandarin tree since it requires a cross pollinator to produce fruit. This is not cheap, mind you. We handled this Orlando very gently (at the expense of our lower backs), and followed all planting instructions to a T. We have two other trees from this nursery, which are doing fantastic, so basic care is no issue. Now the problem is, they use ridiculously heavy soil. It honest to God feels like they fill the pot with cement (no exaggeration). Even a small tree is probably a couple hundred pounds of soil--it's so dense! Anyhow, when we cut open the pot *exactly* as directed (and we've done successfully twice before), we noticed all this cement-like soil was fragmented, and was so heavy, without the supportive pot, gravity pulled it forcefully away from the tree. In the process, it ripped off the entire rootball from the tree, immediately killing it! I saw my hard earned cash spent on this tree just burn into a ball of blazing glory right before my very eyes! WTF! We merely had the tree for minutes before its ultimate demise! If Jeff and I were at fault (i.e. we dropped the tree, were rough with it, drove home recklessly and took corners fast, planted contrary to instructions, didn't water, etc) I'd take the blame and chalk it up as a loss. Yet our trip home and planting was uneventful. I feel Greenfield Citrus Nursery sold us a defective product with bad soil! We called and emailed management, who delayed as long as possible, and finally advised many days later, they do *not* warranty their product, but would be willing to make an exception and give us 50% off, and then sort of even vaguely blamed us for not having a truck (even though our entire vehicle is flat like a truck and there were absolutely no issues fitting the tree inside, and they placed it inside with a tractor!). Big Box Stores, by comparison, sell trees at 1/4th the price with a full year warranty, no questions asked! And oddly, our "poor quality" Big Box trees are the happiest and most prolific in our grove. What Greenfield Nursery has going for it is good, Arizona specific rootstock and rare trees. But certainly NOT their warranty or service! Votes: A. Accept 50% off and try again with another Greenfield Citrus Nursery Orlando Tangelo and hope we get a better tree. B. No compromise and put on the pressure for a full refund (since it was their soil that caused the issue!), and possibly request delivery and planting, so if we have the same issue, it's on them. C. Never shop at Greenfield Citrus Nursery again and just get a cheap replacement tree of another kind from a Big Box Store and be happy we don't have to carry around another several hundred pound tree or deal with Greenfield Citrus Nursery again. Simply the best place for a homeowner to buy citrus trees in the valley. Trees are locally grown. Arizona soil. Arizona climate. Makes a huge difference. Speaking of huge, the root balls are larger than those of trees sold at most non-specialty retailers. The larger ball adds to the challenge of transporting and planting, but it helps the tree get established much faster. The trees pictured in the photograph posted range roughly in price from $65 to $85, very fair for a superior product. You'll also be able to select from multiple varieties of lemons, oranges and grapefruit, not just from one or two. The staff, you may be talking to an owner, are very knowledgeable, and will talk you through specific advantages and disadvantages of each variety. There are significant differences not just in fruit, but tolerance to sun, speed of growth, and so on. Greenfield Citrus Nursery is locally owned. There are live peacocks and chickens wandering about the property. This day, we just dropped in just to see the birds. The kids loved it. The staff was not at all annoyed and seemed pleased when we told them the three trees we had purchased from them were thriving. One more thing. You don't have to buy a tree. If you aren't able to buy all the fruit you want at the Orange Patch next door, there are often lemons, oranges and grapefruit for sale very cheaply at Greenfield's. read more

She treated me like a good friend. She sent a crew out right away to take a look and help us out. I was so impressed with Amano and his crew. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and answered all of our questions. I could go on and on about the great service, communication, pleasant conversations, punctuality, quick response, and more, but I will just say that we are more than impressed with the service and our trees. I'm conflicted about Greenfield. I like the quality of their trees and have bought several, but everytime we're "helped" by the lady with the blonde hair, we leave feeling like we've gotten the most terrible customer service. She's really anal, stingy and just not pleasant to be around. Not the type of person who should be on the frontline of sales and customer service. They have no warranty on their trees. Their selection has not been great (their website lists items that aren't there). And even their smaller trees are 150lbs due to the soil. A medium sized tree is 800lbs. It's just not reasonable to move around without a tractor. I was super disappointed too; we were interested in a tree and wanted to sample a piece of fruit, as it's a decades long investment and we wanted to be sure we liked what we were going to buy, since in a few years time, our tree would be producing hundreds of these fruits a year. On a 25 acre farm in season with fresh fruit overflowing from the trees, they weren't willing to share even a segment. I'm sure rats just take what they want at night, but they can't even share with customers spending their hard earned money? I wanted to give them another chance because I'm a tree lover, but being the second time we've dealt with the same poor customer service, we'll continue shopping elsewhere. P.S. I noticed a review from Victoria on here, and it appears she had the same terrible service. It sounds like it's the *owner* who is so awful, which makes it even more unacceptable. We definitely do not want to support a business of an owner who treats customers so poorly. Like Victoria mentioned, when we are helped by the associates, everything is great. But these owners--they should stay away from the public and leave the associates to take care of customer service! read more

I've bought several citrus trees here over the years. I don't think I will ever go anywhere else. The selection is good, the advice is fantastic, & the planting crew is the best! Debbie is full of information & knows what she's talking about. The same people have planted every one of our trees in the past 5 years. It says a lot that the crew stays the same for several years. I'd like to complement and thank Debbie. One of our mature citrus trees is having a difficulty and turning yellow. I called on the phone to ask for their guidance. I was given some useful advice and they suggested I provide photos so that they could better understand the situation. Debbie has replied quickly and in enough detail that I can take prompt actions. I asked a follow up question a few days later and again Debbie was most helpful. Great experience with greenfield nursery. I bought a grapefruit tree and navel orange tree yesterday. The lady was very knowledgeable and told us exact procedure for planting them. She also gave us tips for future pruning. They loaded them up in the truck for us and staples them down to avoid damage on the drive home. I called this nursery looking for someone to come and take a look at my tree that looked like it was dying. The lovely woman asked me to send a picture of my tree. She then took 10 minutes of her time to tell me the best procedure to try and save it. Then she consulted with her husband to make sure she gave me the correct information. Amazing! Want citrus trees? Or maybe you want more, or maybe you have some and they are not doing everything you would like them to do. This is your place. Rarely do I find a commercial establishment where the staff are truly experts in what they sell - usually questions get quizzical looks and meaningless answers. But talk to John, look over the grounds (yes the trees are actually growing here), and be amazed. Just seeing Greenfield Nursery is an experience. Wander around with or without a salesperson, sample fruit from the trees (watch out for the peacocks), and select the varieties that work best for you. They will tell you about frost sensitivity, fruit retention (do they drop to the ground before ripening), taste, pollination issues, planting in proximity to other trees, and just about anything else you need to know. Then they will plant your trees properly and guarantee them (in my area, this meant jack hammering the slate out of the way and adding good soil to the hole). And all this costs about the same as any other nursery charges. HINT: Take pictures of your trees and the general area where you want to plant. They can look at a picture of a tree and tell you what it had for breakfast. Amazing! read more

Their trees are extremely healthy. We had a couple sizable palms delivered today and their delivery guys were so considerate and careful not only with the new palms, but also with our property. This is a 5 Star nursery. Upon arrival I was greeted with a flock of peacocks. Pretty cool. If you are looking for the best selection of citrus in the Phoenix Area Greenfield is where it's at. Everything is grown in ground and on site so you know it's well adapted to the climate and heavy soil. Your tree will have a larger rootball than if it came from a pot and will just be much healthier in general. The prices are on par with anywhere else so theres no reason to go somewhere else. You will also find figs, pomegranate, peaches and so on... I bought a pomegranate and a lemon tree and am having them delivered. Delivery is super affordable as well. Some nurseries charge a lot more to go much shorter distances. I'll probably even head back to pick up a few more trees to add to my order because I want what they got. It's good stuff. read more

This Nursery is very nice, has high quality citrus in it and even very informative workers. The reason why this is a 1/5 star experience is because I took my money somewhere else and paid double because of the horrible experience with the owner(wife). I had an amazing associate helping me and my fiancé, we were going to have a worker dig the holes in our backyard so we could get a discount on planting because we still wanted the professionals from the nursery plant the trees, I hear from the corner "are you sure they are going to show up?" In an aggressive tone and I said yes we hired them two days before you are coming to deliver the trees, she responds with "Those guys are always busy". At this point I didn't know what to say just kept checking out with the associate. What made me beyond angry is this nursery is full of animals peacocks, roosters etc. I have a service dog that is trained for my handicap fiancé this is a place of business and also a nursery which is typically dog friendly and it is actually illegal to kick him out. Before we went to check out I noticed where you check out is also their home that the front of it is turned into a place of business where you purchase your trees. Before we went inside we asked the associate if we could come in with our dog she said yes. (Not that I didn't see a few chickens go inside the house before us and we were just being polite our dog is legally allowed to go wherever my fiancé is). We start checking out inside the owner (wife) makes the comment about the workers then waits a few minutes and says, "get your dog out, my husband is allergic" my fiancé was shocked our dog is a well behaved standard poodle who is hypoallergenic and has a clear vest that says service dog my fiancé responds "our dog is hypoallergenic but if you feel uncomfortable I will step outside" she gives a big huff and walks my fiancé out. (Not that her husband can't possibly be allergic to the roosters that go through their home and Thanks for using the word "please") My fiancé walks outside to wait for me. I don't know if she was having a bad day but if she didn't speak to us at all she would of had a large sale from her associate who was wonderful. Her associate I could tell was very uncomfortable with her comments and was trying to ignore the fact she was saying anything. I will NEVER recommend any of my friends to go here and I will NEVER go here again because of my experience. Experience is everything. Advice to the nursery, the front of your home is a place of business if your husband is allergic to dogs do not let any dogs into the nursery, nurseries are a very common place people bring their dogs. You cannot let them into the nursery but not let them in the checkout location. If I was alone with my dog you would of lost a sale because I wouldn't of been able to go inside. I have read two negative reviews concerning Greenfield Citrus Nursery and have to chuckle, though I'm sure the owners do not find the comments humorous. I have purchased, and grown over 80 + citrus trees over the past fifty years here in the valley and have found Greenfield Citrus Nursery a most reliable, friendly, and informed place to buy citrus trees. They grow their trees onsite in a sandy clay ideal for citrus trees. When they dig the trees they are extraordinarily careful in preparing the tree for transplant so as not to disturb the rootball. Yes, 16" and 18" rootballs are heavy, yet I find them easy to transplant if a person carefully slides the tree at an angle into the planting hole. Removing the tar paper is easy and one is left to simply replace the dirt around the rootball. I am a 74 year old man who has had multiple arm and shoulder surgeries as well as a quintuple bypass survivor. If I can do it, anyone should be able to. If one follows the expert directions that Greenfield Citrus Nursery provides, the transplanted tree will thrive wonderfully. Even if the rootball is broken, a citrus tree can survive quite well as long as the exposed roots do not dry out and the tree is shaded for the first two summers. (Tips: let the rootball dry out a little before transplanting - this will decrease the amount of lifting and pulling required to plant the tree; also, it is very important to not handle the tree by the trunk!) Finally, a word about the folks that run the place. They are exceptionally knowledgeable about rootstock, varieties, fertilizing/watering, diseases of, and other general horticultural practices related to growing citrus. They always seem friendly, willing, and happy to spend time educating me and others on any questions that we might have. I have found only one other nursery in the East Valley, A & P Nursery on Baseline Road in Gilbert, that is comparable to Greenfield Citrus Nursery. (Note: A & P does not grow their own stock, choosing to purchase their trees from Sunset Nursery in Yuma which buds most of their standard-sized trees on Carrizo Citrange rootstock, a viable and excellent rootstock, though not quite as well adapted to heavy clay soils as the Seville Sour Orange rootstock that Greenfield uses.) Nevertheless, I would highly recommend either nursery to anyone wanting to purchase a citrus tree. read more

Just purchased a handful of trees from Greenfield and they were installed in my lawn without damaging it whatsoever. Amazing. Highly recommend using these guys!
