Green Heron is a new Italian style Sandwich Shop that opened in Old Wethersfield, in the old Luna Pizza space. They have some seating outside. As you enter the inside space, there is a lot of open room before you get to the cash register. It seems like they have space for tables, but they didn't have tables at least when I went on Day 1.
I ordered two half sandwiches for takeout. And I tried part of each. A chicken parm and an Italian Meat Lovers. I thought the chicken parm was pretty good and the Meat Lovers was generally pretty good, but see below.
For starters, the Seeded semolina roll I had for both sandwiches was a highlight. Super fresh and high quality.
Wethersfield is a tough spot for selling chicken parm's because there are at least two very good options. The Green Heron chicken was in a single layer. The cutlet was pretty good, but it didn't really stand out for me. The sandwich had red sauce, pesto-type sauce and mozzarella. I prefer a stretchier cheese on my parm's. The sauces were good.
At least on the online ordering platform I used, The Green Heron sandwiches come with some toppings, and you pay extra for some other toppings. Even very basic things like red onions carried a $.50 up charge. The Italian Meat Lovers Sandwich came with roasted peppers, some sort of leafy greens, balsamic driz and cheese. I added red onions with the up charge because I like a lot of toppings on my Italian Combos. I like the juiciness and texture contrast of vegetables.
I don't think it's a great idea to upcharge for basic sandwich ingredients. If you go to most sandwich shops, they'll top it how you want with basic ingredients for no extra charge, within reason. But here's the thing, if you ARE going to charge for extra toppings, the topping needs to make its way to the sandwich. Green Heron forgot my red onions. So I paid an extra $.50 for nothing. I didn't send it back or ask for a refund because I didn't have much time since it was a workday lunch and they had other customers. I can forgive missing an added topping on Day 1, but I don't feel great about paying extra for a missed topping that I think should be included at the base price.
The Italian meat quality was very good. I didn't love the ratio of meats to the non-meat toppings though. For me, it needed more vegetables and more acidity.
I think Green Heron is worth checking out. Maybe some of the other sandwich options would be more to my liking.
In any event, I wish them the best of luck.
