I had my first grinder at Franklin Grinders when I was 19 years old, when I lived in Hartford. They were giant! I had never had a sandwich what was so good!! When I moved back to Florida, I missed those grinders so much! I've never found a grinder that compared with them! I am 72 years old now and still talk about those grinders and how great they were. I bought 2 not looking at prices.$55 I was shocked until I saw the size . 2 people could share a 1/2. 2 of us finished 3/4 of 1. But the bathroom hasn't been cleaned in more than a month so im glad i visited it when i was done eating. I feel if they cant clean the bathroom how clean is the kitchen prep area . Based on flavor alone, this was probably one of the best restaurants in the entire state, along with the other fallen heroes Corner Grinder and Maple Giant Grinder (gone but never forgotten). Now? The impression is that no one cares. The staff, the owner, the customers - who cares? The interior has been neglected for so long that it's honestly becoming gross. There are rumors of the owner trying to sell the place. But the worst sin of all is that the quality & consistency of the food has slipped. Without that, they've got nothing. Much like the classic cheese steak joints of Philadelphia, FGG have always had a bare-bones, "take it or leave it" attitude. Very disrespectful people behind the counter the man and the lady with the blonde hair. They were just talking rude to the customers . We ordered 2 turkey sandwiches then someone else wanted one so we added another one the lady got an attitude because of that. They gave us the last bit of the lettuce in the bowl I asked for more lettuce and she got an attitude. Younger times, we purchased grinders the day before Fishing Opening Day and would have them while we waited for the fish to bite. With a couple of cold beers and Franklin Giant Grinders, we were very content biting into our grinders, no matter if the fish were biting. Their Half grinders are about 12" long. My friend and I split them to taste both meats. The Full Grinder is a family meal. These photos were at Hammonasset Beach State Park. My friend, Greg, picked them up at noon time this past summer we drove the convertible out to the beach. If you're from HTFD Suburbs you remember this place from when you were a kid .Clean -Vibrant and didn't mind taking a drive and paying top dollar for an overstuffed grinder. I didn't mind waiting in line. No lines now! Dirty and depressing- $14.50 1/2 Grinder and clearly NOT what it was. Neighborhood is risky. Something didn't change- same floor and garbage can from 1980. Still has up some of the lamest Covid protection you will ever see up. Hate to see what the kitchen looks like. What a disappointment from years ago! The entire restaurant is so filthy, I don't think it had been cleaned since the last time I was there in 2008! My husband would not let me use the bathroom after he had used the men's room. Even the outside was unkempt with trash and empty liquor bottles littering the area. There was one person taking orders, making sandwiches, collecting money and, answering the phone. I have to hand it to her, she was very calm with at least 5 walk-ins and several call-in orders. The manager (owner?) breezed in finally and pitched in, but seemed to be a little bored with the whole situation. They still provide you with a huge amount of meat, but the rest of the sandwich was totally lackluster and not at all as I had remembered and hoped for. Nothing fancy or anything fan fare about the Franklin GIANT Grinder Sandwich Shop. It doesn't have to. The immense size of their legendary sandwiches and grinders sets itself aside from all others. I picked up a 1/2 grinder with spicy Capicola, peppers, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and oil on a fresh grinder roll. I was pleasantly comfortable after half of the half, but I still had some beer left in my glass and had to march on. Success! I'm now ready for a nap! I have been coming here for thirty years since I went to school at CCSU in New Britain. I absolutely love their chicken parm grinders. Delicious and great portions. I was disappointed for the first time yesterday when I got my grinder. This is the only time I placed an order by phone for pickup and this is the only time they got it wrong. Omg I was so happy this place was still here! My grandparents were from Hartford and I grew up in Los Angeles. Spending almost every spring break with them. And every trip we paid a visit to this Grinder shop. Almost 18 years later I was able to eat here with my boyfriend and family. We all loved it! Authentic grinder sandwiches. Grabbed a couple grinders for tailgating before a UCONN football game. This place has a long standing and wonderful reputation. The grinders were on fresh, soft bread and the meat was piled high! Nice red roast beef that was excellent and the Italian combo was equally good and piled high. That's the "thing" here piled high cold cuts. To me, it's almost too much meat. I added roasted peppers to my Italian and to me, the bread and toppings are what make a great tasting grinder. I'd prefer interesting toppings (Nadelis comes to mind) or a unique Italian roll - but that's just me - and why they earned 4 and not 5 Stars. A slightly different bread (soft inside crispier outside like a baguette ?) and fun toppings would earn them all world status in grinder Hall of Fame!
