Ramona's Chopped Cheese

Maybe you've had a Chopped Cheese Sandwich. But I bet you haven't had a Wagyu one. Ramona's Chopped Cheese just opened in Hartford near The Webster Theater. A Chopped Cheese is similar to a cheesesteak, but it's made with an uncooked beef patty that is chopped and grilled, usually with onions and peppers. I've heard the traditional cheese is a smooth melting American, which is what I had along with lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup and mayo. I added banana peppers when I ordered, but I didn't notice those. Grill Pro Antoine tells me they have a secret bread hook up from the Bronx. The bread is like a long medium crusty grinder roll. It held everything together well. In addition to Wagyu, they have a range of fancier patties like ground Filet, Strip and Ribeye and Porterhouse. They also have less expensive cuts like sirloin. And non-red meat as well. My Wagyu Chopped Cheese was delicious. The meat was tender and well flavored with the melty cheese, ketchup and mayo. I liked the lettuce and tomato for that texture contrast. The bread was fresh and better than I expect from most places. There are no tables, and there is barely any room to stand in this Small Speak Easy of a sandwich shop. You order at a video kiosk in the lobby and they give you a takeout bag when it's ready. So plan accordingly. Goodwin Park is down the road a bit if you're coming from away. I am not a Chopped Cheese pro, but I thought this was tasty. Given the cost of burgers at most places, I thought the price (around $14) was pretty reasonable. If I was rating just the sandwich, this would be a 4.5 Star review. Although service was friendly, I have to downgrade a bit just because the lobby is so small and it's going to have a tendency to get cramped. So my overall score is 4.25 Stars.

I heard about Ramona's from a foodie friend and watched a Daymn Drops video on YouTube, so I decided to check them out. Ramona's is a small establishment, and there is no seating in the inside. The establishment could only fit three to four people, and you order from a kiosk. They sell a variety of Chopped Cheeses such as Brisket, Chicken, Filet Mignon, New York Strip, Pork and Bacon, Porterhouse, Rib-Eye, Sirloin, Turkey, and Waygu Chopped Cheese. I met the owner; she was very personable and provided great customer service. My friend and I wanted to order the Waygu Chopped Cheese, and the kiosk said it was sold out, but the owner told us she had one more left and would make it for us. I was very appreciative because I wanted to try that cut of meat. I was going to order the Chopped Cheese plain, but we added Hot Peppers, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Onions, Barbeque Sauce, and Mayonnaise. The Chopped Cheese is made to order so that the wait will be about fifteen to twenty minutes. Opening the sandwich, I noticed it had more toppings than the meat. I understand that food is expensive and the meat cut is more expensive, and I don't mind paying the price, but the Chopped Cheese didn't look as full as my foodie friends on Instagram or displayed on Daymn Drops Youtube review. New York Chopped Cheeses are filled with meat, but the sandwiches have lower quality meat and at a cheaper price. As I took the first bite, it was so spicy that I couldn't taste the meat. I decided to try the meat by itself, which was pretty good. The meat was not dry and had good flavor, and the bread was soft. However, I think I will get the sandwich plain next time to get a real feel for it. The customer service was great, and I will return to try another sandwich.

Wagyu chopped cheese fully loaded as suggested by owner and cook

Wanted to see the what the hype was all about. Not here to bash any small business but I'm here to honestly review food. Ramona's is on Maple Ave in Hartford with street parking. It is a very TINY shop. The cook was sitting outside on a chair when we arrived (thought he was a patron). The order kiosk right inside the door said the Wagyu was SOLD OUT but the owner, Shavon, came out and said there's one left. I specifically went for the Wagyu so naturally I wanted to try it and agreed to take the last one but it may have been a sale tactic now that I look back at my experience. It was recommended by the owner and cook to get it fully loaded, the way it comes, "how Ramona made it." I'm thinking I can't mess up the original way it comes because they should know what they're talking about; it's their establishment. Ramona was Shavon's grandmother. Ramona passed away and left Shavon "a lot of money" and Shavon was one of 22 grandchildren. I thought it was TMI but I wanted to hear the story she wanted to share with me. Shavon is from Harlem and chopped cheese originated from Harlem so I am truly trusting my sandwich with Shavon at this point. It took about 15 minutes for it to be made. Fully loaded Wagyu chopped cheese at Ramona's includes: Wagyu beef, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, barbecue sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, grilled onions and jalapeño peppers. It was almost $17 and definitely not worth it, unfortunately. I was handed the sandwich and I immediately went to my car to eat it because it's a takeout place. The iceberg lettuce was completely wilted and the tomato was hard. I found it odd that the chopped cheese was recommended this way and I was very disappointed. Bread was soggy from absorbing all the moisture and condiments; sandwich dripping from the wilted lettuce and tomatoes. It did not hold up well. The only flavor note I tasted was spice. The spiciness overpowered everything. It was messy to eat and too spicy to enjoy. I took two bites and tossed the sandwich and I never waste food but this was not the sandwich for me. I eat parts of animals most people throw out (chicken feet, organs, etc). Ordering Wagyu, I thought there would be no problem with it. Honestly, I was looking for the meat in my sandwich. There were more toppings/condiments than meat, which was disappointing. The meat didn't taste like Wagyu that I'm used to. I wish Ramona's a lot of success but they have a lot of work to do in my opinion. There are many sandwich shops that deliver on flavor. I don't recommend Ramona's and I will not return.

"Rose darling come to me All I ask of you…read moreIs make my wildest dreams come true" (Steely Dan) You probably don't need a PHD in linguistics to surmise that the Italian words "La Rosa" translates into the English words "The Rose". And if your wildest dreams happen to revolve around Italian comfort foods and well stacked sandwiches, well, do I have a place to make those wildest dreams come true for you! La Rosa is your quintessential Italian deli with dozens of grinders, paninis, wraps, salads, soups and a daily hot bar of pasta and chicken entrees. We ordered a grilled Panino Melenzani ($12) with eggplant, tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil. It was grilled right in front of our eyes, so it was as fresh as could be. It had plenty of tender sliced eggplant, yummy cheese and fresh tomatoes. I went with my usual, an Italian Combo (half size for $14) stacked a mile high with Ham, Turkey, Genoa, Mortadella, Capicola, and Provolone with lettuce, tomato, onions, and peppers on a fresh loaf of Italian bread. It was superb, and the portion size was so generous that it lasted me for three lunches. As we were paying, we spied some home-made cookies by the register and grabbed an oatmeal and a chocolate chip to take home. Everything ran $32 for a ton of wonderful Italian goodness. We didn't get a chance to check out the hot bar. It wasn't open today because LaRosa's Marketplace was closing early for personal reasons. But I promise you, the next time we visit we'll leave with one of their chicken or pasta entrees. We love our Italian delis, and LaRosa's has immediately shot up into our top tier.

The only bad thing about this place is that it's not open later!…read more I went here one time with some coworkers when we were on a break for lunch in the area, and I think about it often! Everything here is fantastic, but my recommendation is the three squared. The cutlet is fantastic and the mix of the red peppers with the arugula and cheese is delicious! It just hits the spot.

I've driven by the Cove Deli a quadrillion times and never even noticed it. Around 8:30 am, I used…read morethe "open now" filter and then Yelp-searched restaurants for my "current location". Cove Deli was the only place that I hadn't already tried that I would try. Selection made. Cove Deli is located in what could be a charming grey multi-level residence towards the far north side of the Silas Deane in Wethersfield. It's sign is grey/blue and looks like it would be obscured by the shade for some of the day. Guess that's why I never noticed. They serve things such as breakfast sandwiches, coffee, burgers, salads, lunch sandwiches and prepared meals for home consumption. The inside was well-cared for and decorated in a manner fitting the nice exterior of the building. I would be comfortable eating there, although I'm still mostly in takeout mode. I ordered something I usually only order in Manhattan - an everything bagel with lox, red onion, tomato, capers and cream cheese. Cove Deli promptly answered my call, and my order, which Cove Deli calls "Lox on a Bagel", was ready when I arrived about 10 minutes later. Service was friendly. The "Lox on a Bagel" was decent, but is a couple of steps down from the best New York places that I've tried. The ingredients were all fine, but there were no real standouts. I would definitely return to try something different at the Cove Deli, but I prefer other places in the area for bagels. Three Stars
