On one occasion, the juice that I was looking for was out of stock on the shelf. He could've easily told me that there were no more but he didn't and I respect him for that. I've been coming for many years to purchase food and meat and will continue to do so as long as their doors are open to the public.

Staubitz Market is one of those places that makes you appreciate old New York. I love coming here…read morefor the quality of the meat, the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and especially the old-fashioned atmosphere. It feels like a Brooklyn institution, with a history and character that you simply don't find in many places anymore. In a city that changes so quickly, Staubitz is a real treasure, and I hope it remains part of the neighborhood for generations to come. I also want to encourage everyone to support Staubitz (and the other small businesses on Court Street) right now. Our stupid and dishonest government recently reduced Court Street to one lane for cars (and the city blatantly lied by saying businesses on Court Street asked for this). The changes have suddenly made it extremely difficult for customers and deliveries, putting additional pressure on neighborhood businesses like this. Court Street has become a horrible mess. These longtime local businesses need our support. Now is a particularly good time to shop there.

And i wish it were open at 8 am on Saturdays instead of 9 when many of of us are out and about shopping. We had a close friend recommend this butcher. We went there with high hopes for a brisket and were…read morevery, very disappointed. The first cut piece we requested looked like no other brisket we had ever bought before, parts of it were very hard in the packaging. It was also not a long piece , nor the same height all the way across. Instead it was like a mound. It seemed strange but we had received a strong recommendation so we purchased it. It came out of the oven very tough and we ended up throwing it away. The staff were nice but we were not there for chat , but for a tender brisket.

We've been customers of Bay Root meats for over 5 years but we're shifting to Balady. Anytime you…read morecome, there is NO meat and the chicken is in bad condition and discolored. You can only get mince and God knows what's in it. This is despite the fact that we come the day the meat supposedly arrives and not one cut is available. It's been one year, no joke, and we can never get any cut of meat we ask for. No cuts, no steaks, no biftek, nothing. Just mince. But I guess the customers that give the butchers money on the side as we see in front of our own eyes take precedence over loyal customers who never shopped for meat anywhere else in Bay Ridge. Lesson learned, you lost a repeat customer because your butchers give meat to who they want and save it for the people they like (who can give them money on the side). I guess bakhsheesh is more important than repeat business and customer loyalty.

It could be kept cleaner but I'm OCD with cleanliness so don't mind that thought. My overall rating is a strong 4 for No. 1 Fish Market/ Utica Fish Market The End.

I'm quite obsessed with this place and it's a true savior in a neighborhood that's a food desert…read more Let me be very clear: this is a small hole in the wall in a slightly sketchy neighborhood and quite humble in appearance. The owner is decently pleasant but I wouldn't neccesarily call him friendly, so just don't go in asking a bunch of silly questions and you'll be fine. The selection of fish is very broad and you can buy whole fresh fish to take home after picking your own, or choose from fillets. You can shop 2 ways here: pick, pay, and leave, or pick, pay, and have them steam cook it for an extra $1 per lb. I always have them steam my fish and add their blend of sliced potatoes, onions, corn, broccoli and carrots which is the best way to go, every time! The ladies who steam are freaking experts with seasoning! I recommend that you get your order steamed and ask for everything which includes seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper and red pepper flakes. They squirt your fish with lemon juice and then rinse it, followed by generous amounts of seasoning (I've never had it be too salty, they just get it right somehow) and put everything in a big plastic bags for steaming. and when your fish is done (13 minutes) they put a big dollop of butter (actually a "buttery blend" but it's still very good, just roll with it!) in the bag, close it up and put it in an aluminum container with plastic lid. I mention the packaging because it does an incredible job of keeping everything hot for at least 90 minutes after you buy it. You'll spend about $12-20 easily but you will LOOOOVE IT!!
