I used Greater Austin Moving for my last move; the third move I have made in Austin over 18 years. Greater Austin Moving was by far the most expensive service provider I have ever used, but we understood they would be providing a premium service. That is not the experience we had. We sustained more damage than we have experienced before while the work cost 5x more than we have ever paid. The proprietor reduced our $20k+ bill (for a 2628 sq ft house where we did the unpacking ourselves) by only $300 as compensation. As well, the service provider used inconsistent levels of packaging; in some cases, highly durable items were wrapped excessively, while in other cases fragile items were wrapped sparingly. This approach resulted in extra work for us, and (predictably) unacceptable levels of damage to our belongings. I would highly recommend against using this provider. read more

I never imagined I'd have to write a review like this, but my experience with Greater Austin Moving & Storage was so unprofessional, unkind, and downright disrespectful that I feel obligated to warn others. In June, I hired Greater Austin Moving & Storage to move me out of my house and store my belongings in their storage facility. After receiving the initial quote, I even went the extra step of doing a personal walk-through with their team to make sure the estimate would be accurate and that there wouldn't be any surprises. I couldn't have been more wrong. The final bill was drastically higher than quoted, and I was even charged for random line items, materials, and overcharged me for hours they weren't even there. When I voiced my concerns over the billing errors, instead of handling the situation professionally, the owner, Tammy, became outraged and defensive, demanding immediate payment and refusing to listen. Her reaction was hostile and completely unnecessary. Only later did she apologize, asking for forgiveness and apologizing for her temper. Fast forward, two months later, when I notified her I was ready to move my things out of their storage facility and into my new place, and that I would be hiring a different company because of my terrible experience, she retaliated. I have experienced such a hateful business owner. She suddenly required 5-7 days' notice to retrieve my own property and refused to release my belongings until I signed a document promising not to leave any negative reviews. Think about that: being forced to give up your right to speak honestly just to access your own possessions. It didn't stop there. Tammy then told me that she requires a "facilitating fee" of 3-4 hours just for allowing another moving company to pick up my belongings. I have never heard of such thing. When my things finally arrived, many fragile and valuable items, which were packed by Greater Austin Moving & Storage themselves -- showed up broken. I sent three separate emails with photos requesting reimbursement. When I confronted Tammy, she dismissed me again, saying my belongings were "no longer insured" because I didn't use her company for the final delivery. That excuse is both unethical and outrageous. I was told they weren't insured because I dared to use a different mover and insurance no longer applied to me.Tammy's conduct is not only unprofessional, it shows a complete lack of integrity and respect for her customers. No one should have to deal with a company that mistreats clients, ignores damage claims, and weaponizes contracts to silence honest reviews. Greater Austin Moving & Storage turned what should have been a smooth process into one of the most stressful, disrespectful, and costly experiences of my life. These guys were easy to schedule and very reasonably priced. My crew of Jason, Eric & Trey arrived on time, got straight to work and did an incredible job breaking down and securing our furniture for transit. Each item was individually wrapped in a blanket, blanket secured by tension bands and then plastic wrapped for maximum protection and efficiency. They broke down and moved my 1,800 sq ft/3 bed/2.5 bath home in 6 hours flat from S Austin to Fitzhugh Rd off 290. Very impressed, very happy, highly recommended. read more

Just wanted to update my experience with GAM. Tammy, the Owner reached back out to me at 8:30 on a Monday night and left a message for me apologizing for my experience, "they dropped the ball", and what happened, "customer experience was not what they were hoping for here". She asked if I could give her a callback and try to work through the issue and get something set up for my move. Outstanding customer service...or so I thought. I called back the next day during business hours and left a message asking for a callback to chat. That was Tuesday and here it is Friday...crickets. ******************************************Revised********************************** Well...within the hour of my Yelp update... Tammy contacted me, she left a message and I called her back and we spoke. She apologized and said her week was busy with a death in the family. She said she had kept the original date available and would accommodate me but realized that due to the amount of time that had passed that I had probably made other arrangements, which she was correct about. I told her that when I got her message, that I called and cancelled the other appointment. My thought being that GMA is really going to make this right and will take care of me, they won't want to give me a reason to complain after all this. She seemed genuinely surprised when I told her that I cancelled the other appointment and would take her up on her offer. Hmmm. When I was calling around, after being left in the lurch by GMA,... most Company's gave me a price over the phone. They all stated this would be a 3 hour job, 2-3 guys, and that was the minimum. $125-$150 an hour, so $375-$450. Reasonable for what I needed done. GMA/Tammy came back with $1830. I responded to Tammy and told her that I got my old slot back with her competitor and thank you. I have a feeling 1 of 3 things happened or a combination there of; 1. Tammy misunderstood what I was trying to accomplish or I didn't explain it well enough. (Although I did send pics and her competitors seemed to know what I was talking about) 2. GMA is crazy expensive. Or 3. Tammy didn't really want to deal with me. I've heard some business owners do this. They throw out an astronomical price thinking you will be a problem to deal with and this will make you go away. If you do take them up on their services, they will make so much money off you that it will ease their pain in having to deal with you. I don't work this way, I've actually explained to potential customers before that we won't be a good fit working together and I'll need to bow out, no hard feelings. They are usually very understanding. My next door neighbor liked GMA and the guys I talked to were very friendly. Tammy seemed friendly as well. For what ever reason...it just wasn't meant to be. I couldn't get these people to take my business, it was.... weird. Set up for a twice quote and never heard back, figured I did something wrong and called to get a quote. They "found it" it was reasonable priced and once I asked if they had military discounts to my delight they did, it ended up being $90 an hour for two hour minimum. Cool right?! Next I get the confirmation email and confirm and then realize we never set a time. So I emailed and asked "Erm excuse me? How do we do this?" They first asked for my address because they forgot that before ‍ and then told me 8:30 am pick. Well that didn't work for us with having to get a moving truck, so I responded with anything possible between 11-6 (big gap I thought) and she said how about 10? - not in the big gap I asked for and didn't work for us. So I said no thank you and they said good luck. After speaking with my husband we decided that we could get a truck the day before so I emailed back asking for the 8:30 time if it was still available- no response. My husband called, they told him that they'd call him back and never did. Not sure if they were done with us because of disorganization or we weren't gonna make them enough money or they hate veterans (Kidding!) I've moved more than 2 dozen times in my adult life. From local to cross country and everything in-between. This may have been one of the smoothest moves I have ever had. I just repainted the entire interior of my new condo. I was hoping, but not expecting the walls would stay clean and undamaged. I've never had a move where there weren't at least a few dents, nicks, scrapes or dirty handprints on the walls. Somehow the crew managed to leave everything in pristine condition. Not one single mark on the walls, even the stairwell. It really was easy from beginning to end. We were only moving a block, so I balked at the $45/$90 "transportation fees" of the other companies I looked at. This place didn't have one (hooray!) and their rate was very reasonable. We used Greater Austin Moving and had a very good experience. Competitive bid, arrived on-time, moved us without damaging any of our things ... what more could you ask for! Oh yeah, and a few weeks later when we had to temporarily move some stuff out of the first floor of our new house and into a storage unit in our driveway (so a painting contractor's mistakes could be cleaned up), we called on short notice and the Greater Austin Moving guys dropped by to move the stuff out and then back in again a few days later, all for a very low fee. So to start off with i have never used a moving company before so i wasn't sure what to expect. Moving is obviously a stressful time and i have moved so many times in my life that i wanted to see if i could have movers do it instead. Because i am definitely not in the best shape or fit and didn't want to die of fatigue or exhaustion. So here is what i learned about movers. First and foremost, this was a great company that made everything run smoothly, efficiently, safely and very fast. From the get go the administration was prompt, helpful and put everything at ease. Because basically movers are legal thieves that come into your home, take everything and then drive off. LOL, just kidding. But i was nervous about some of our stuff not being damaged or lost. Then the actual moving process was super fast and very awesome. Those two guys made everything great. I'm pretty ashamed (or jealous probably) that i cant lift a whole recliner by myself and move it. I normally have to break it down into parts then move it. Anyways this company was great from start to finish and was well worth the price tag. I highly recommended Greater Austin Moving. And if you need more details please keep reading about what i learned. - Pricing - All the companies i put out bids to had 3 main concepts that are very standard. There is a set hourly rate, minimum hours required and you get 2 guys and a truck. The hourly rates range from $110 to $150 per hour and a minimum of 3 hours. I was thinking that is awesome i can definitely afford that since i am only moving down the street. But as i was looking over the quotes i saw a lot of unusual fees like; time of day, traffic, number of boxes, mileage and many other fees. Which made the bill almost double the hourly. Well crap, it looked like if i wanted to use movers i was going to get nickel and dimed. So i almost decided to just call it quits and risk giving myself a stroke or die of exhaustion. But then i got the bid from Greater Austin Moving. It was a super reasonable $120 for a minimum 3 hours for a total of $360. Some places were cheaper hourly but had fees. So the quote from Greater Austin Moving said that the only charge (fee) was the hourly and they provide all the safety equipment and mats and blankets. I didn't believe this at first so i actually inquired about other hidden fees or what not and they told me again that the only thing i will be charged for is hourly! Freaking sweet baby! Best thing about them, straightforward with pricing and i appreciate the fact they don't try to nickel and dime me. So for me the pricing was the best. - Service - The service was great from the time of booking to the moment they were done moving everything. The lady that booked my appointment was extremely helpful and honest. She made sure everything was set and ready and put us at ease about moving. The day came for moving and we had our 8:30 appointment and we were ready. But the drivers got lost..... lol. This made me slightly nervous as i didn't know when timing started. But anyways, the 2 gentlemen arrived, looking like the men from Magic Mike, and i showed them around. At first the 2 guys seemed off but as a few minutes passed they were very friendly and helpful. They even thanked us for packing everything in the same size boxes. Well yeah duh, make it easier for the movers. Yeah its their job but come on people it helps them a lot, especially when trying to load a truck and secure everything. These guys came with all these great things to wrap up furniture, pack things and secure things. The best part was they did the whole job in exactly 2 hours. Bravo Superman and Batman with your big arms and legs. No seriously, each guy literally picked up recliners, tables, mattresses by themselves (not both at the same time, but one guy moved a recliner by himself). Put my skinny a$$ to shame, need to start eating my Wheaties. Another good thing about these guys was the made sure everything was where we wanted it before leaving. I felt super bad about not being about to help but these guys were running circles around me. Overall, the service was great. - Tipping - THIS IS FOR ALL POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS. I didnt know if tipping was customary or not but tipping is customary. So if you know already then you can stop reading. It is a service and most services get tips. I didnt know that until a few days before my move when a fellow coworker told me about his move and that he tipped them. Whew, glad i had that conversation as i didnt know. I did some research (yes, i did research because im a nerd and want to make sure i tip correctly) and found out that it when tipping movers it is normally $10 per hour per mover. So 2 guys for 2 hours would have been $40, $20 for each. So please tip your movers. It was sad to hear them say that some people dont tip, especially during summer. Anytime you have to move it can be and is very stressful. My family (wife and 2 toddlers) were in a time crunch to move into our new house. After several bids from local movers in the Austin area I felt the most comfortable with these guys. From the first interaction I had to the time they finished the move and left, everyone was so professional and courteous. I even had a last minute change in the moving date and Tammy (the owner) was so accommodating and very understanding. She said no problem and made it happen. I had email updates and reminders which confirmed my confidence in them. Movers were a little early on moving day and called as a coUrtesy to see if I needed more time to prepare. Once they arrived they were very efficient and worked smart. They took great care of everything and worked around 2 toddlers the whole time. There were no hidden fees or trip charges etc. the rate they quoted me was exactly what I paid. Here's my story: Way too much per hour for three college age movers. One was professional, the other two spent more time screwing around and texting. After all is said and done, I have three pieces of furniture with broken parts. One cannot be repaired to new, another has an apolstery tack broken off and irreplaceable, the third is a custom aspenwood bed that has a piece of the footboard split. I have that glued and clamped, but it too will not be like it was. Go ahead, take your chances. I personally would never use this mover again. This company may give you the best hourly bid but don't fall for the okeydoke. We ended up spending 3x what we've paid in the past. To make matters worse, it was a move that resulted in damaged furniture and all the hardware missing from furniture they disassembled. We are sleeping on a blow up bed among many other frustrating things that happened with Greater Austin Moving. They told us we'd have a crew of four. That changed throughout the day. At times we had only two crew! Although it's movers are very nice and professional, we were paying for qualified and experienced movers. We learned that our belongings were thrown into storage. Things we're not secured, mattresses soiled even though they were provided plastic covers for our fairly new mattresses. It was so prolonged that my husband helped at the end. When contacted they want me to go out and find the replacement parts to my furniture. That's my time and money. When asked for their insurance info it was like pulling teeth.
