The restaurant is still open but for delivery and takeout ONLY! The food was AMAZING. BEST Chinese food I have ever had. Fresh, full of flavor, & just scrumptious. The staff was friendly & had great conversations with us. Finally, I found my new go to Chinese restaurant in Monterey. Tried this for the first time last Friday, and I was so impressed. The portions were pretty big and I loved all the dishes we got. While in Monterey for the Jazz festival we stopped in for lunch before heading to the fairgrounds. Best choice that we could have made. Living in Southern California, we are accustomed to good Chinese food. The Great Wall restaurant exceeded our expectations with wonderfully tasting dishes, terrific service and reasonable cost. The best Chinese cuisine in Monterey hands down. We have been going to Great Wall for over 20 years. Every meal has been fabulous. The couple that owns and operates the restaurant are attentive and caring. The service is always great. Tonight, the server brought a small table to extend our dining table. (We ordered a lot of dishes) So we had enough room to dine comfortably with all of the yummy things we ordered. He did this without without being asked. That was very thoughtful, thank you. He also recommended a deep fried eggplant in garlic sauce that was incredible. I do not even like or eat egg plant. But I could not get enough of this awesome eggplant into my belly! The mapo tofu is the best on the planet...try it and you will see. Great Wall has it all, the best food, the best service and a welcome family atmosphere, all of this provided with consistency and sincerity. I cannot wait to go back! read more

Tonight 2/1/2021 we ordered the War Won Ton soup to go. All of the ingredients were fresh and the soup was steaming hot. This was the best soup we have ever had. Don't pass this place up if you're looking for fresh Won Ton Soup. read more

Below average food in taste and quality. This place needs a serious upgrade. Interior very dated, sticky floors and tables, furniture falling apart, and decorations random...it looks like this was once a local bar or Denny's and they made it into a Chinese restaurant. Food is Bland! They served egg drop soup with the lunch special; that should have been my first clue. The Kung Pao Chicken tasted like it came out of a can; bland and mushy. I had asked the waitress if the potstickers were homemade or store bought. She said she did not know....oh well guess that mystery will be an unknown = did not order them. Did she go ask the cook? Nope...she just did not care. And food was sizzling hot in most areas but very cold in others indicating it was reheated; yuck. I have had worse but continue to fail to find good Chinese food in Monterey. Can't recommend Great Wall; looks like they are barely hanging on...sad. And the fortune cookie was stale...did not finish it. Guess you get what you pay for. Added to AVOID list! read more

Soooo, I came back. That should say something...aka this food is booomb! Still love the chinese chicken salad, that hot mustard dressing is everything This time I tried the beef chow mein and it was sooo yummy. I also ordered the salt & peppered shrimps WITH THE SKIN ON--it matters ok!! That crunch is has just mmmm mmm mm!!! Yes, these two dishes were a bit oily but it wasnt excessive and it didnt stop me! Excellent Szechuan Mandarin cuisine. Very fresh and deliciously prepared. I haven't ordered anything that wasn't done well. I've dined in and done take out. The one missing star is simply because their service is satisfactory but not excellent. Not rude but not really friendly either. read more

I'm in town visiting for the weekend and this has been the best food stop of our trip. We stopped here unexpectedly and came across an instant favorite. I've been a fan of egg foo young but can never find it where I'm from (Ontario, CA), Great Wall has it and it's delicious. Full order was Beef egg foo young Orange chicken Spicy Mango Chicken All of the food was delicious. Wish we had stayed to dine in as the decor and atmosphere were very welcoming but to go was just as accommodating. Service was great and welcoming. read more

They have recently made most things vegan friendly! The owner is vegan so she has made changes to the menu. For example the chow mein is not an egg noodle & vegan, the tempura uses no egg for the batter and even in the soups, it's veggie based (waiter said their oyster sauce was not real oysters but a plant based sauce). To top it off, Food is delicious. The waiter was very knowledgeable and had excellent recommendations. We had their chow mein with tofu, mandarin tofu, and salt and pepper tofu/eggplant. They still have horrible delivery service they still give the standard 45 minutes delivery time and the standard "we only have one driver tonight" answer when you call to check on your order (I've been ordering from this place for almost 15 years and they always had one driver working the night I order!!) I've had the lunch specials, which are good and economical, but again, nothing to write home about. The portions are decent and the food/ingredients are fresh. This is a good Chinese food restaurant. You will enjoy the food. It's tasty and well prepared. Also know that I don't give a 5 star to anyone except the blow my socks off best food ever, so 4 stars is pretty darn good. Like all restaurants, it has some standouts and some less successful dishes. First: we got take out and one of the misfires was an ordering error on our part. The Shrimp Dumplings were packaged in a parchment paper and the delicate rice flour dumpling stuck to the paper. That's on us. However, the filling was excellent and the wrapper we scraped off the paper was very good. Order this if you're dining in. It's wonderful. The Potstickers were fine. Maybe a bit dry, but good. The BBQ Pork was fine. Not great but not bad -- actually too lean, a bit of fat would give them more flavor. The Szechuan Green Beans are wonderful. Not too spicy -- actually we kicked it up with some chili oil -- but really great perfectly blanched and crispy still. We ordered off the menu and got Twice Cooked Pork, for which the cook used the BBQ Pork instead of Pork Belly. So the Pork was okay BUT the vegetables were outstanding. The cabbage and mushrooms were so flavorful. The brown sauce was perfect. I'd take this dish with just the vegetables and skip the pork. We made another journey off the menu with Squid in Black Bean sauce. Outstanding! The squid was perfectly cooked. A bit too much green bell pepper for my taste but the dish was very good. Sauce, again, very good. Singapore Rice Noodles (combo). This is one of my go-to dishes and Great Wall nails it. Not too dry, not oily, but moist with lots of flavor and chock full of proteins. Could probably use a 1/2 teaspoon more curry powder but better too little than too much. A definite winner we'll order again. We've ordered grime several other Chinese restaurants in the area, and Great Wall is #1 at this point. read more

The veg and vegan selections are wonderful. The flavors are intense and fulfilling. The crispy spring rolls are hand-made with fresh veggies and you can really tell the difference. Favorites are the Mandarin Tofu, Garlic Tofu/Broccoli, Veggie Bao, Hunan Tofu, and especially the Salt and Pepper Fried Eggplant. Believe it or not; there isn't a lot of good Chinese here on the Monterey Peninsula. My mom should know, she lives here and long ago worked in several Chinese restaurants. This one is decent. It has a nice decor inside, is centrally located in Monterey, and I heard the owner? speak Chinese. However the waitress and buser do not. We came on a Monday night in July, which might be slow, but it was over run by hungry tourists, both Asian and not. The friendly waitress was stretched to handle 30+ people on 8 tables, and the manager/owner seemed a little indifferent and slow to help. She finally spoke to the Chinese party of 15 to help serve them. We had 3 dishes. The Chinese Chicken salad was a large portion but uninspired. Needed a little more crunch and flavor. The Beef Chow Fun was decent but needed some more green onions and bean sprouts for my taste. The veggie dish of black mushrooms, tofu and Napa cabbage in a metal pot was delicious, but seemed almost Korean with the Jap Chae glass noodles and sweetness. Most a la carte dishes here are in the $10 - $12 range and of good size. They do have set combo dinners like most Chinese places that cater to tourists. They serve tea in tall black thermoses, making it easy to refill without flagging for help. We had leftovers to take home. So what they lack in total gastronomy they make up in quantity. read more

I recently ate here on my trip to Carmel and it was really authentic, and fresh. The woman who helped us served the food in to go containers to help keep the entrees warm while we dined outside and it really did keep the food warm the whole time. I had the veggie egg rolls, chicken chow mein and beef with broccoli. Everything was very well prepared and I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends visiting the area. read more

Totally outstanding food. We have had home delivery twice now and "dined out" while dining in. As we live not far away, our orders have come in a very short time and were still plenty hot when they arrived, delivered by a very pleasant individual. We've been going down the menu to eventually try each presentation. So far, totally delicious. Be sure and have cash ready to pay when the order arrives as they specifically asked for it in lieu of credit cards. And give the delivery person a generous tip because he's there at your door with a very nice smile. It was our first time there. The waiter really took care of my mom, my 6y/o picky eater and myself. The food was delicious especially their Sizzling soup. Almost missed that if our waiter had no brought it out. The spicy green beans with chicken soo soo good!! Clean and practical place to go eat at.
