I'm assuming it was MSG (which doesn't bother me), but the dish won't wow you and it might turn you off. The beancurd w/mushroom & bamboo ($10.75) is the only substantial vegan tofu dish and here it's a mix of vegetables and tofu in a gloopy brown sauce. While not amazing, it wasn't terrible. I also ordered a vegetable gyoza, but they forgot to give that to me, and it wasn't worth it to complain once I figured it out. La Crosse doesn't have a ton of Chinese spots other than stripmall buffet spots. Great Wall is a couple blocks away and, while I didn't try it, it seems popular and the food looks decent based on its pictures.
