We've been doing the Freedom Rock tour throughout Iowa (Google it...86 down 13 to go). This takes us to the far corners of Iowa and into many small town. Yesterday found us in Waukon Iowa. We chose to visit Yen Hing Dragon Restaurant. The interior is a little dated, but this is typical of small town restaurants. It's obviously family run. Seating is a combination of booths and tables and chairs. The menu is pretty large and there's something for everyone. We went with the House Special fried rice, a lunch special of Sichuan Spicy Chicken (lunch special with hot and sour soup and an egg roll), an order of crab rangoon, an iced tea and a water. $29 and change before tip. The food came out after a very short wait. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted good. Our server was very attentive. If you're passing through Waukon give these guys a shot. We were pleasantly surprised and left happy. read more

A very nice small town Chinese restaurant. it is of course family run and as you sit waiting for your food, you may see one or two children doing their homework or watching YouTube at one of the tables. Mama and Papa turn out good (but not outstanding) Chinese food. But within roughly 30 miles this is about the best Chinese food you're going to find. Service is fairly efficient and pleasant, but not effusively so. They're more interested in getting your food to you than building a relationship. It's not often crowded but I wonder if that's because people in this small town are not used to Chinese food. Some of their noodle dishes, including one Thai noodle dish, are pretty interesting. Under new ownership and doing a great job. I had shrimp lo mein and it was delicious. The egg rolls were a little greasy but were tasty. Crab Rangoon had plenty of filling- nothing worse than skimpy dried out crab Rangoon. Sizes as usual are more than generous. Great lunchtime prices. Very disappointed....will NOT go there again. The people were very friendly .....But the food was practically inedible. The breading on the "sesame chicken" was so thick and tough you could barely find the chicken, and when you found the chicken it was dry/tough....with thin, orange watery stuff poured over it and not a sesame seed in sight!?!?! The "mild" Mongolian beef was spicy HOT....but without the heat there would have been no taste! And the "House Special Fried Rice" was gummy and everything in it was totally over cooked..the veggies were mush, the shrimp like rubber! read more
