The stylist was bubbly and fun to talk to. She knew what she was doing because when I told her what I wanted, she said no. The result was a ton of compliments from friends. Unfortunately, she has passed away since then, and I have yet to find such an awesome stylist. I've been back to this location quite a few times, each time trying out a new stylist, but none have been great. I've gotten a lop-sided haircut, been lectured about how Americans don't use the metric system, been kicked out of the chair because "my hour was up" (I asked her to layer my thick hair), and so on. So under appreciated! I had Kathleen and she was amazing! She really let me pick the style I wanted and she was super nice when answering questions I had about my hair and how I could maintain it. He place was very nice and accommodating towards time availability, we were instantly seated when we got there and we had only checked in two minutes prior. No appointments needed but should definitely check in, makes everyone's job a ton easier. Tip: trust them! They've had years of experience and should get more credit. I didn't come in with anything too challenging, just asked to add layers and a subtle fringe because ANY cut from my grown out mop would have been an improvement. Ashley made sure to communicate exactly what she was going to do, and didn't go on without my agreement, which is nice for those that are very anxious over their hair. She cut my hair and cut it again another 2 inches because I wanted it a bit shorter. My haircut took only about 20 minutes or so. Worst haircut I have ever gotten. I walked in to get my bangs trimmed. I have blunt fringe bangs, and I was silly enough to think that it would be simple. Of course I was wrong. First off, the woman cutting my hair sneezed and didn't wash her hands, proceeding to run her fingers through my hair. Ew. Second, she spritzed my hair, but mostly just got my neck wet. Considering how far my bangs and my neck are from each other, I was pretty appalled. Third, she was extremely scissor happy. She started snipping away, and before I could say something, she had already cut most of my bangs away. So I got out of there, as quickly as I could, surrendering my $6. This is how my bangs look now: They are to my eyebrows. So far so good. Oh wait. There is a layer of bangs on top of my bangs that is a good 3-4 inches above the bottom of my bangs. This is good for those who don't really know how to use hair cut jargon. I've been coming to this Great Clips on and off for the past four years. Mainly when they have sales, coupons or deals. No appointment needed. They usually have 2-3 stylist on hand. Wait ranges from 5mins to 20mins (at busy hours). Not too bad, especially for those who need a haircut and don't want to make appointments. The haircut. My hair style isn't too difficult; I haven't had a problem with them. Most of the stylist I've experienced are nice. A few time I have come home to notice patches of hair (I end up cutting myself), uneven sides and they cut shorter than asked for. If you want a simple fast haircut, come here. If you want a nice fancy haircut, find a fancy hair salon. If you want a simple, fast, cheap haircut; drive to Sacramento - there are some $6 places... I guess you should remember, you get what you pay for. Although, at the normal price of $16... I don't know if this place is worth the full price. Great Clips has yet to disappoint me! The barbers are all very nice, friendly and competent. Then again, my hair is pretty easy to cut. But still, they seem to actually know how to make your haircut look good from the get go, which I feel like is hard to find sometimes. That aside, the nice thing about Great Clips is that when you come in and ask for a certain cut or style, they take note of it so when you come in again, you can just ask for the same thing. We've been going to the Davis location for years to get my now 10-year old's cut. We always went to the same person - Brenda, who did an excellent job cutting his hair, using scissors alone. We were so happy with her, I even followed her to Carmichael for a while when she had temporarily switched locations. Today, my son went with his dad to get a haircut, but Brenda is no longer there. Someone named Grace cut his hair instead and truly did a number on his head. The cut is absolutely atrocious. It is patchy all over, completely uneven, and she butchered his bangs too, leaving about 1/2 inch of zig-zaggy mess. I think even if someone intentionally tried to butcher a haircut, they couldn't do such a horrible job of it. Tried to call the manager and complain, but they are already closed. Ugh. I really hate getting my hair cut. Not because I'm afraid of cutting it, but because I hate having people I don't know right in my face. Which is why I love Great Clips. If you expect a nice salon visit, obviously you shouldn't come here. But I love coming here because it's really fast and really easy. Each time I've had different stylists, and they all did a good job. They're always really fast; sometimes my haircut is finished before the guys' haircuts. Plus, the price is great. I was the first customer who came in today, there was no wait. I asked for a slick back with the sides faded and showed them a picture of what I wanted. The woman who helped me said she would do her best. As started fading the sides with a razor, but I pointed out that it was not even. She kept saying she was trying her best, but was not attending to the spot that I said was not even. She kept trying to fix things, but could not even give me an even cut with a razor. She got frustrated, told her manager to help me, and as she walked away, threw the hair apron in my mouth, probably by accidental. Either way, it was very unprofessional disrespectful. Where is the half star option, Yelp? This damn place has to be the WORST hair salon that will ever exist in our lifetime. They're all terribly bad. They charge $16 for a standard male cut, no student or military discount, and one of their stylers with lipstick is way too inconsistent--makes too many mistakes. I'd rather cut my own hair, or go to the hair salon right near Richards and Olive--they only charge $10 for students. The lady that I mentioned cut off a huge portion of my hair that I had gotten a very expensive perm on. She doesn't know how to blend in the hair, and she also hates having hair on herself, which makes you wonder why the hell she chose that job. Er, I really should have asked for the name of the stylist that had given me haircuts previously, because the stylist I went to this time around butchered the left half of my mostly straight Asian hair in a very short amount of time. I guess my left side decided to be temperamental for a day and therefore resulted in 1 inch a scissor mishap, leaving a chunk in my left side and a style considerably shorter than my right. The stylist said that it might be because of how she was styling the hair at the moment, and that everything should be better when I shampooed/styled/etc. Two days later: everything didn't magically look better. The asymmetrical hairstyle still looked like someone snipped off wayy too much. I'm usually not picky about my hair, but putting up with comments about my uneven hair for two days, I came back and got my right side cut shorter to match with my left. It's hard to tell how to rate them. Highly variable. A couple years back I had a guy cut my hair who didn't speak english... that was hard. He asked me to pick out a photo from a magazine so I did. When he finished I pointed to the magazine picture and he said/pantamimed that it couldn't be done with my hair type. Would have been good to know before he started cutting. More recently I went back (because they're cheap/convenient) and have had reasonable experiences. I've stopped asking them to cut it a specific way though. This is really a 2.5 star review. Service here vastly varies depending on the stylist you get. I take my kids here for haircuts when they are running coupon specials so its kinda like you get what you pay for. They are fine to do basic boys' haircuts such as #3 in back,#4 on top etc. but I would not go here to ask for a hard haircut. I recommend using their online app to check in. It cuts your wait time down and normally you can just walk in and be seated. I had to guide her more than I've ever had to guide a stylist and I was left with a really choppy cut. I had to ask her to involve another stylist in order to fix my 'do. I'm really not one to post negative comments but I felt obligated to in this instance. I went in to get the my hair cleaned up a little since it had been like 4 months and I was seen quickly enough. However, it started and ended badly when their staff asked the simple questions of what size of clippers do i want them to use and how much off the top. I explained that I didn't want clippers or I kind of liked the longer length I had since I'd never really let my hair get that long before. But I needed the back cleaned up and the front a little shorter (just enough to stop poking in the eyes). She said she didn't understand and proceeded to use the clippers on one side of my head. At that point, it was kind of past the point of no return so I allowed her to finish which resulted in losing 2-3 inches off the top as well. The hair cut would have turned out fine if I wanted shorter hair. What bothers me was that every time I asked for something, she simply said she didn't understand and continued to proceed however she wanted versus what I had been asking for.
