Marisa had good reviews and so I trusted her even though the first cut she made was significantly much shorter than I expected. However, the end result is short forward bangs that are above my eyebrows and cannot be swept to the side. I came straight here since I live across the street after getting my haircut at a different salon in Davis that was poorly blended and not what I asked for at all. I was so upset and walked in hoping to make an appointment for another day to get it fixed. Marisa got me in the chair right then and there in between her appointments and completely fixed my unblended face framing pieces and the unevenness of the first cut. I scheduled an appointment with Carolina for highlights after being scared to dye my hair for the first time. Her website said it was $275 was fine. My hair had never been dyed before and it's not very full so I expected the final price to be about $275 but Carolina avoided answering pricing questions until the very end. She was nice and very chatty and seemed to take her time. When I was told the total of $340, I had to ask her to repeat because I thought I misheard. I paid and left. I honestly hated my hair because I asked for blonde ish highlights and they came out looking brown and there was a straight line in the front where it was not blended. But Carolina seemed to love it, saying "it was so lived in". I asked her why the cost was so high and she said she charges an hourly rate of $85. I'm not sure why she didn't say this prior or during. I already provided a brief review on Google, but I would like to elaborate on my experience here. For a dry women's haircut, the price was $35 (not including tip). I paid in cash since this place doesn't take card (Zelle and Apple Pay are examples of other accepted payment options though). Especially as a college student, that price is a steal compared to the $50-$70 price (usually including shampoo, conditioning and blow dry, which I don't prefer) offered at other hair salons in Davis (and the occasional less-than-$30 price offered at some other salons that will most likely leave you unsatisfied). I asked for a simple haircut to my armpit with layers, and Vanessa fulfilled that request easily without needing me to show any pictures for reference. I can't speak for other stylists here since this was my first time here, but I really liked how Vanessa didn't comment about my hair condition. She didn't comment about any split ends I had (I cut my hair once a year because my hair takes forever to grow long) and didn't ask about what hair dye I currently use (I haven't dyed my hair in over a year). She didn't recommend for me to get my hair trimmed every one-two months. She also didn't have me take my glasses off, which is a major bonus since I'd like to see what's happening to my hair. I have attached pictures of my hair length before and after the haircut. I had 5 inches cut off (I didn't realize I had so much hair cut off). I have come here over the past 2 years when I need a haircut and though some stylists have come and gone, the people they hire are amazing. Each time i've arrived with a different stylist throughout the years, they have never disappointed me, I've always had great results. I came here last month with someone new named Marisa, I should mentioned I am quite picky with those who cut my hair but I always trust those at Expressions designs. I just have to say Marisa is so sweet and kind and you can tell she really loves doing her work. I talked to her about the haircut I was looking for and mentioned my birthday was coming up when we were chatting. I was always unsatisfied with how other stylists trimmed my bangs but that was until I met Marisa in Scissorhands Salon in Davis. She knew exactly what I was looking for and I haven't let anyone other than Marisa cut my hair since. Not only is she a good hair stylist, she is such an amazing human being. I was very hesitant to write a bad review because I don't like confrontation or conflict. However, after thinking about it and knowing that graduation and graduation pictures are coming I don't want any other girl to experience what I did. I booked with Carolynn for April 5th, however we rescheduled since her husband got vaccinated and met on April 9th. I wanted to get a copper/ginger color, but when I asked for a price she said she had to see my hair in person to give me a price (which was reasonable ) HOWEVER, she didn't give me a price until she was DONE! She asked if I wanted to dye half my hair or my full head. I said whichever worked best for her since I didn't know much about hair. She said it would be "best for her and me" if we only dyed half my hair. Halfway through she said she would dye my full head instead ( keep in mind she left patches because she originally planned to only do half). Also at NO TIME DID SHE MENTION ANY PRICE. When she was done I was a YELLOW BLONDE! I didn't know what to do because I HATED MY HAIR but I felt pressured to say I liked it since everyone at the salon kept complimenting my hair! At first glance my hair just looked like a yellow blonde. At the time I didn't realize why she kept moving my hair for the photos she would post on Instagram. I now realize she was hiding the BLACK HAIR SHE LEFT! Then, she proceeded to tell me I had to pay 500 not including tip in CASH. The 50$ deposit I had placed for my appointment was included. When I asked her why it was so much she said she charged based on how much toner and bleach she used and that she had written down everything she used. She never showed me what she wrote she only "read" the total. I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANY HAIR STYLIST CHARGE PER TONER AND BLEACH! It wasn't until I got home that I noticed chunks of my hair were black and she only dyed the top of my head. I cried because not only was my hair a yellow blonde but I was charged 500+ without being told a warning or ahead of time. I finally built the courage to message her and express my concerns. She agreed to fix it and said she charged me because of her "time". So now she changed her story from charging based on toner to her "time". In addition, when I asked her to thin my hair at the beginning and to cut it she said she could do that after. If she planned to charge for her time and toner how come she didn't do this process at the beginning? Any professional that I've spoken to cuts hair and thins PRIOR TO DYING HAIR! Anyways, the day she "fixed my hair" she told me to get there at 9 am April 13. I made sure to arrive ten minutes early and she arrived an hour late at 10:15 ish because she had just woken up and still had to stop to pick up a co workers flowers for her birthday. Once she arrived I mentioned how I had chunks of black hair left on my head. She literally only dyed the top of my hair!!!!! When I brought this to her attention she said the roots were intentional and the patches of black hair she didn't have time to fix! SHE DID NOT HAVE TIME BECAUSE SHE SHOWED UP AN HOUR LATE! YET, SHE HAD TIME TO TAKE PHOTOS OF MY HAIR TO UPLOAD ON HER INSTAGRAM. PHOTOS SHE STILL EDITED BECAUSE MY HAIR LOOKS NOTHING LIKE WHAT SHE POSTED. She then told me she could fix my hair when it showed more in about 2-3 weeks for 200+. So she wanted to basically charge me for HER MISTAKES when they showed more! Never did she apologize in person! Her mother even told her "she's been waiting here for an hour" she said " I know I feel bad" no apology in person, and she had the audacity to brush me off and send me home with those PATCHES AND CHUNKS OF BLACK HAIR. IF YOU HAVE THICK DARK OR ETHNIC HAIR PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM CAROLYNN DO NOT LET HER DYE YOUR HAIR SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO DYE ETHNIC HAIR! Please go to someone who CARES ABOUT YOUR HAIR AND YOU. To Carolynn thank you for ignoring me & brushing my concerns! You made me feel less than a person, because of this experience I learned to use my voice and won't let myself be intimidated or allow myself to be put in a similar situation ever again! I hope you don't treat anyone else like you treated me. If you can't dye someone's hair, please be honest with them! I have never been treated so unprofessionally in my life! I will not be retuning and will be warning my peers to stay away! Again this was my experience with CAROLYNN I CAN NOT SPEAK FOR THE REST OF THE HAIR STYLISTS. I was wrong. *if you're going to book an appointment do your research before coming here so you can choose a stylist who is knowledgeable in hair. I asked for long layers and curtain bangs with a slight trim. I left with hair slightly past my shoulders (my hair was past my armpits before) and bangs. The girl who first attempted to cut my hair, Maria, had no idea what she was doing and it wasn't until she told me she was going to have someone double check if the shape was correct was when I realized what a mistake I had made. She randomly cut my hair in different places and the end result is horrible. It is uneven, randomly cut, does not blend in anywhere. She never asked me how short I want to cut. I lived in Davis for four years and I'm attached to Expressions; in fact, I still drive up from SF to get my haircut here. So I have long AND extra thick Asian hair (as pictured) which has been butchered by so many salons even though I have a relatively easy haircut: blunt cut plus more recently, blended long layers. I was so anxious that I almost gave up looking for a good salon but then I saw on Yelp that this place was highly rated so I made an appt. My very first time (three years ago), I had Lexi and she did an amazing job on my long hair. She's no longer with Expressions but I had to give her a shoutout because she gave me faith in this place since I believe she's related to AnaMaria (the owner). I've been back several times to see Lorena and Sylvia! I'm mad at myself for not asking more pics of my hair, but as someone with long hair, I trust this place wholeheartedly. My hair request is usually cutting some length off into a blunt cut using clippers and adding long layers that blend nicely. All I'm asking for is healthy looking hair. Can't rave about them enough. My friend and I spontaneously decided to get our haircut this morning and after quickly checking yelp, expressions seemed good and affordable. When we entered, the place was busy and it was only 9:45am! Yes, it's a Saturday but still. We were walk-ins and they accommodated us right away. My friend got a trim and bangs while I had a wash and cut. My hair dresser, Brianna I believe, was amazing! She was so knowledgeable about naturally curly hair and would ask me if I wanted her to use purple shampoo to keep my dye from being brassy. I explained to her that for the most part, the cut was meat to enhance the curl and get rid of some dead ends. She knew exactly how to trim and layer while making it seem like there was basically no length taken away. Overall, I highly recommend this place. I've been to Expressions Hair Design twice and have had a satisfactory experience both times. I've only gotten hair trims here, so I can't speak about the other services offered here. It's helpful to make an appointment beforehand just to see when they're more available to take you in, but they're fairly flexible and don't mind if you're a bit early or late to your appointment. Everyone is friendly and can work up some great conversations to keep you from getting bored. They make sure you're absolutely satisfied with the end result and that you're not just saying it just to be polite. I remember expressing my concerns on how my requested blunt ends would look after a shower, but my hair stylist Carolynn reassured me and said that I could come back to have it fixed free of charge if I didn't like it after a shower. The trim was $20 (not including tips), which I think is decently priced for service and quality between a high-end salon and a cash-only converted house garage. During my first time here, my hair stylist even curled my hair because I mentioned that I was performing in a concert that night. I'll probably be coming back if I'm around in the area! They go big on decorating the place during the different holidays and seasons, which keeps it looking fresh and exciting. read more

This place is located in the same plaza of Dollar Tree on E 8th St. It was a relatively easy location to find. I made an appointment with Silvia, after hearing about all the raves about her. Con: 1.) Took her just 10 minutes to finish trimming my hair and bangs. I felt like nothing much was done to my hair and she started blow drying and styling it. 2.) It was kind of awkward the entire time because she didn't really talk to me. 3.) She cut my bangs differently than all the other salonist, it was just slanted down cut, it's choppy. 4.) My right layers are shorter than my left. It's choppy too making it really noticable. 5.) Dream Hair Salon on 65th in Sacramento charges $20 dry hair cut as well, but they take more time and effort to understand my hair before cutting it. Pro: 1.) Considerdate! She told me she rather start off cutting too little than too much, so she can fix it afterwards. 2.) Silvia was really easy going, when I told her what I wanted fix towards the end, so a total of 15 minutes to cut my hair. If you're looking for a fast and affordable cut, with low expectations then this is the place for you. But, I like more one on one time with my salonists and getting opinions from them on how to cut my hair, so this place is not for me! read more

Service: Hair Dye Cost: $85 for one color on long (one inch past my breast) and $10 tip Stylist: Sylvia I had virgin hair when I came in to see Silvia last Friday 1/17/14. I showed her an album of light brown hair that I would like to have. My hair was a dark brown coming in. Since this was my first time dying my hair I was very nervous but Silvia made me feel less anxious. She showed me a tobacco color (6T) that looked very lovely so I agreed to it. The first time she used it, it seemed as if she had used a 10 vol which deposits (makes it darker). So the FIRST time she dyed it, it did not look very different from my original hair color minus the HALO of lighter hair at the top of my head (lighting maybe?). So I told her that it did not look like the swatch and indeed it did not. So she tried again (VERY ACCOMMODATING OF HER) adding in more (7T) to the tint. The color I left with was beautiful unfortunately it was not what I had showed her or had in mind. I had asked for a light brown and left with a very pretty auburn. Not to mention the top "looked" a lot lighter than the bottom. When I brought my tresses up to my head, they were the same shade but because light always hits the top of your head, it looked significantly lighter at the top. I verified with my hairstylist in SJ (I decided to try Davis out to avoid having to travel with pictures in natural (sunlight) and non natural light (inside) and she confirmed that what I had "looks red." I came back the next day and she compared my hair to the swatch. My hair was a little lighter than the swatch and definitely more on the "red brown" side. When I mentioned that it "looked red and that I thought it would be more on the chocolate brown side," another hair stylist said "Brown IS red." However, Silvia wanted to make me HAPPY so she told me to come back in a week if I was still unsatisfied with my hair. Since my hair is still on the red tone (more golden/red tone now) I am going back today and getting a 6N, 10vol to hopefully result in a medium brown. I have given them 4/5 for outstanding customer service but could not give them the last star for having to come back after paying so much the first time. read more

In Davis this is the best place to get your haircut. I've been to a few different barber shops in town and none of them can cut hair like these ladies. They have the skills to do whatever you want done. They will give it to you straight and also give you a good price. I have never been more satisfied with any cut I've gotten here. They cut 3 inches shorter than I wanted. Also, right side is an extra 1 inch shorter! I asked for a Lob, longer in front and shorter in back bob. Clearly, not even that on the right side.
