My Girlfriend has an SUV that has an alternator that was replaced less than a year ago by the garage down the street. I didn't care for their service for a number of reasons, although they seem to get only good reviews from locals. Maybe I'm surrounded by masochists and suckers. The alternator died on my birthday, taking the battery from the same garage with it. I tried not to let it ruin the day but it turned the event into a frustrating towing tour of garages in the queens area, a stay at a mirrored ceilinged room in a themed motor inn that became an obsession. (I have to get the room with the heart shaped hot tub pictured in the brochure and I will feel vindicated, the fool foolishly said in his darkened heart, unaware that apparently this room doesn't exist. And hasn't since 1996.) AAA roadside automated phone marathons kept things lively until we realized we had an alternator problem and the alternator had about a week left on the warranty. So my birthday became a catalyst that ended in a garage that I disliked and would never have gone back to, but it was going to be free work vs. the insane quotes some other garages were quoting. The AAA tow guy dropped off the busted down SUV for them to begin work on and they picked it up the following day. One week later and they've talked my girl into all new brakes and other brake related parts promising it's done you can pick it up tomorrow only to discover a new problem before it came time to pick it up. How can you miss that there's a broken axle when you're doing the brakes? How can an alternator covered under warranty become a 1600$ week long event? And when I went to pick up the car the guy tells me he did the alternator for free like it was a favor. It was under warranty and your shop installed it. Not to mention they wouldn't print up a copy of the brakes or new alternator warranty and the invoice for the brake work was all listed as having been done the same day I picked it up, but it had been a week. They closed on weekends. So we got a call Friday late afternoon saying they needed to do more work on it and then nothing. Closed Saturday. Closed Sunday. Tried to sell me on this broken back axle job but I wasn't having it. Just wanted to take it and go. So to make a longer story short and get to the reason I'm writing this in the first place, we had taken the SUV into another shop a year ago when the catalytic converter fell off. We thought it was bandits but bandits don't exist anymore. They've been replaced by morons who get together in one car with dealer plates and steal catalytic converters in Queens while people sleep. Whatever it was the garage we went to was Great Bear. I don't remember much about it but I can say that when we called today, the man we talked to, who was the owner was very helpful and told us to come down and he'd look at it for no charge and tell us what was up with the back axle and other problems we were being told was wrong with the car. So we went and they did as promised and didn't charge a dime and when they were done with it and brought it down off the lift, they told us there was nothing wrong with the back axle or anything else. Didn't try to sell us anything no pressure, and despite the fact that we weren't even at the location where the owner was, they still honored his promise, just honest guys who know the value of a man and keeping a man's word. They saved us close to a grand which is what we were quoted by this other garage to fix a problem that didn't exist. For all of the disgruntled comments-- these patrons were likely looking for the kind of shop with arbitrary prices and shady business dealings. This isn't that kind of place. These guys are thieves and has very shady practice. I recently bought a used van and took the van to this auto shop to get an NY DMV required inspection. They gave me a $2100 quote to fix all sorts of random things such as suspension, drive train, etc. in the vehicle. When I declined the quotation the owner went to my van shadily and scraped off the inspection sticker that he already put on my windshield, then proceeded to fail the inspection. (I thought to my self, how is it possible that this owner can put an inspection sticker on my windshield without already passing it?) I then went to another auto shop that is also authorized to do the NY DMV Inspection. The owner of that shop took a look at my vehicle and told me that Great Bear Auto was trying to rip me off as the reason that they failed my inspection was not true and that the vehicle that I purchased had nothing wrong with it. He then proceeded to pass my inspection. He told me that there are Auto Shops, knowing it's a recently purchased second hand car, purposely giving large bill for repairs to pass inspection. They know if you refuse to proceed with their "recommended" fix, they will fail your vehicle's inspection and that failure will be recorded in the DMV system where then other Auto Shops will then refuse to inspect your vehicle. Then the only choice you have will be to go back to that Auto Shop and proceed with their fix. This is a SCAM shop. They should have their DMV Inspection license removed. read more

Honestly, I have brought all my cars (mainly Acuras) here to the shop. I never had issues with any of the repairs they have done. KC, the owner of the shop, is an honest person and the techs who works under him are excellent. Now, I am writing this review due to false and angry customers who placed their reviews here. Don't get suckered not going to this great shop. BTW, there are only 2 bad reviews written at this time while I am writing my own review...I am assuming if they were truly bad, more reviews will be here. Also, they are not the cheapest but their repairs are top notch and always use OEM parts for critical components. They will take care of all your mechanical needs. read more

What everyone is saying here is very true, except the woman who gave 5 stars. Not only that this place is a SCAM, they also have nasty attitude, especially those 2 managers who always work at the front desk. I went in the other day because something was dragging under my car. They put it on a lift for me and removed the offending flap thingie at no charge. I've gone for inspections, oil changes and to have a headlight replaced. They've always been honest, fair and I've never felt taken advantage of because I'm a woman. 10/10! read more

My every need and concern regarding my vehicle was met. Needless to say every car I have owned since 1991 has been serviced by Great Bear Auto. In 2007 I moved out of state and tried to find a reputable service center near my home. No one compared to KC and his team at Great Bear Auto. I went for a car inspection and they will tell you that you need a new air filter even when the one in your car is still good. They will show you a dirty air filter and say it's from your car. Bunch of scammers! read more

Same story, same scam I went for a car inspection since it is right on Kissena blvdand was told I need to replace this and that, and they said I need to leave my car there before they know what is wrong, I do know a trustful garage, but they don't do inspection, and it is late that day . so I did bother to drive to my guys. the next day,the owner(kevin) called said the tire of the car need to be replaced since there was a big cut ( which I didn't notice at all) and blah blah blah. I smelt fishy and feel regret to leave my car there already, so I ask how much total, he said about $400. I was at work and have no much time to make a smarter decision so I told him go head to fix the car 2 days later, the owner called me, said the car was ready, and the total is $582... Anyway I went to the garage to pick up my car(this Saturday), of course I insist that I only need to pay $400 as he said before he start work on the car, the guy went nuts, he said he will redone all his work , remove the tire , I said fine, then he said I could only get to car back on next Monday. God know what he would do if I left my car there. So I can 911, the officers came quick, looks like they are familiar with this kind of garage scams. they went to talk to that owner, he even yelled at them.... one of the officer came to talk to me, said there is nothing they can do if I want to get my car back, I have to pay what he ask for. he said there are so many loopholes in this business system, and this guy know how to use these loopholes very well. lesson 1: never give your car to those guys you don't know!!! they are all scamMers and know they all know how to play with you! lesson 2: if you know some trustful businesses, stay with they, nowadays, it is hard to find any! read more
