After trying other auto services in town and having mediocre/ poor service I was referred to Gray's and so happy with their service across the board. They were able to find the cause of the noise the car was making that other shops could not! They not only diagnosed it in a short period of time but fixed it for a reasonable cost and fast! Having an older car, more issues have popped up and they were able to fix it right up in a short period of time. Ryan, whom I have spoken with several times is not only unbelievably kind but very knowledgeable. The other two employees I have spoken with are amazing as well. I originally gave this place a 5 Star review. I'd like to downgrade that to 2 Stars. I shouldn't have given them a 5 Star review only based upon one visit. It turned out that the issue I originally had them work on actually wasn't fixed. After a couple of months the check engine light was back on. I went back over and told the check engine light was back on, and was told to make an appointment and leave the car all day, and that there were 3 other sensors that might be causing the problem, it might not be the one they replaced. I didn't like the defensive answer I got so didn't go back. A couple of weeks ago I decided to give them another shot and stopped by with an A/C issue I was having. I spoke to the same guy, and asked him if he could take a look at it at the time, to just open the door and feel the coldness of the air coming out the vent on the passenger side, compared to hot air coming from the drivers side. He said he didn't have time for that, but had me make an appointment for "next Friday", and ball-parked me a minimum cost of around $175 just to diagnose it. I made the appointment. Since I had several days to do my homework, I did some google research and found several probable causes for my issue. So I took it to another place. Even though they were very busy too, they made time to look at it on the spot, they even opened the hood to see if the system was charged. It was diagnosed on the spot, and fixed for less than half of what Gray's was going to charge me for only a diagnosis. And because it was repaired before "next Friday", I cancelled my appointment with Gray's, and I will not be going back. Because trust is important to me! read more

You better know a little about cars before you take your vehicle to this business, because if you don't they will tell you that there are things wrong with your car that really don't need repair. Took vehicle in for service due to an issue with the rear suspension from hitting a pothole. Was told rear hub assembly bearings had broken and needed replaced and that the other side was worn out as well, also parking brake was bad. This seemed to not sound right to me, as I know a little about cars and have a couple friends who run honest shops and don't price gouge, so I called them and asked some questions about what I was being told and if the prices were comparable. So I called back and brought this up to the shop and they became very defensive of their position as to why they quoted repairs and high price. I ended up having them replace the rear hub assembly they said was bad and I felt the price was a bit on the pricey side, but being a shop in the city I was told labor rates are higher so I bit the bullet and made the repair. So going forward, I get a call saying the car is repaired and that the parking brake is actually not broken but it needs brakes. Now had I just went with the original quote and not questioned it, I assume they would have repaired something that didn't need repaired and charged me anyway. I bring the car back down to the county for a follow up inspection. Nothing wrong with the parking brake, the other bearing hub assembly they said was bad doesn't need replaced either. So at this point I have to question as to whether the hub assembly they claimed was broken really was or did I get taken to the cleaners, who knows, but what I do know is that they quoted two additional unnecessary repairs and have tainted their reputation to me and I will not have anything else serviced at this location. Honesty is the best policy and if you find a car repair shop that is honest and doesn't quote repairs for things that aren't broken just to make money then stick with them. I can say from my experience, that doesn't seem to be the policy here. They thought they seen me coming from a mile away and we didn't know anything about cars, so they were going to upsell me unnecessary repairs. Shame on you Grays Auto Service! You know it wasn't right, and that's why you were back peddling like an Olympic track star on the phone. read more

Gray's is the most amazing place I've ever brought my car. Their customer service is excellent. I had to switch the time I needed my car back by and they made it work even though the mix up was completely my fault. I feel as though they've gone above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of and make sure your car is fixed. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone. read more

Um.... AMAZING. Every single interaction I've had with Grays is 5/5 stars. Friendly, informative (and as a woman who knows relatively little about technical car terms, they are never ever patronizing), quick, personable, cost-effective. I've told all of my friends that THIS is where they should be getting their car serviced. Quotes are accurate and fair. One of my favorite parts? Their speed! I've had bad experiences elsewhere where the "it'll be done by __" meant "it'll be done at ___ + an hour" and Grays consistently follows through with their promises. It's so comforting and reassuring. I know that they're doing quality, thoughtful, thorough work on my car. If I had to sum Grays up in a single word? Trustworthy. So, I'm a chick that knows NOTHING about cars. In other words, it's probably very easy to rip me off. Hell, I've probably been ripped off before without knowing it. That's how pathetic I am. Although I know little about cars, I am on top of regular maintenance. I get my oil changed faithfully, and I usually go to one of those drive-in places (Jiffy Lube, Oil Change Express, etc.). Well, after many not-so-pleasant experiences at quickie oil change places (lots of upsell attempts), I decided to go with something different. Enter Gray's Auto Service. I found them via the CarTalk website, and saw that they had VERY good reviews, so I gave it a shot. I called for an appointment, and the guy on the other line was VERY friendly. I brought my car in, they worked on it, and didn't try to upsell! Thank you! The price for my oil change was actually a few bucks cheaper than what I normally pay, so I was happy. In the future, Gray's will be my home for oil changes and other things my car may need. I'm very happy. read more

I hate taking my car to the mechanic. My car is old, I know nothing about it - and it seems I have to take it in all the time. It also seems that every time I do - there goes my rent check and any financial peace of mind I was going to have that month. My boyfriend and his family have been taking their cars to Gray's since the mid-90s. They trust them and said that I can trust them too. I just moved to St Louis and was really hoping that I could find a decent mechanic - but I didn't even know what that was supposed to look like. Now I do. I spoke with Chris over the phone about the details on my car. He was extremely thorough and explained more information than I asked for. This was great - because I don't even know what questions to ask about my car. He said that I'm the consumer and it's my right to know what I'm buying. Yeah! That's right! But that doesn't seem to be the mentality of most mechanics. Not only did Chris explain to me what was going on with my car - but he explained it in a way that I could almost understand! Ha ha. It takes a lot to get me to want to review something. I either have to be almost bludgeoned to death or treated like a kid in Disneyland. Gray's really did the latter for me today and I definately feel like the world needs to know about it. Chris worked on my car and he was definitely going out of his way to help me without the intention of up selling or making an extra buck off of me. I discovered the staff there are knowledgeable and take the time to explain issues without using confusing jargon. They are honest and did not pressure me into paying for additional services, and talked through the pros/cons and logic behind future services. Services were also performed in a timely manner. I took my car first to a big name chain service center.... they said I needed a new catalytic converter (it was broken at neck attachment to exhaust pipe)...estimate $848 with labor. I went to Gray's they told me that it could be repaired with a sleeve welded on to attached pipe...total cost $163. (with a 2 year warranty on all repairs.) It worked for me. Recommended. read more

I have been debating for a while whether to leave a review. I had been taking my car to Grey's since 2010 and have been very satisfied. Bruce I believe was the owner, Rick & Vern long time mechanics. Chris was awesome customer service as well as mechanic, wish I knew where he went. I am not sure of the exact date or timing but would guess under new ownership 3-4 years now. Basically when the new uniforms & Diane, who is very pleasant came into the picture, Bruce was gone, as was Chris. From 2010 when I started taking my car there up until about three or four years ago, every visit was accurate and reasonably priced. Being a woman I didn't feel taken advantage of at all, felt very comfortable taking my car there by myself. I am disabled, Chris had told me once that anytime I had a low tire just to swing on in and he'd fill it up for me. Then I no longer saw Chris working there, no longer saw Bruce, and they all of a sudden had Diane, their receptionist. All the sudden I was getting these high dollar estimates when I was taking my car in for a tire rotation and oil change. When I would take their estimate parts price & compare to Autozone, it was a 50% markup or more. I also had a problem the summer of 2017 with my air-conditioner, I had to take my car in there three separate times before the problem was found. I'm not too upset about this because I believe they were trying to save me money, the first few times were just charges to the AC that didn't hold. When they did find the actual fix it was $450. But there was also a time that same year with repeated visits for a squeaky belt. Finally they found it & it was the alternator belt they had replaced 6 months earlier was faulty. No charge for replacement but the trips were hard, as I am disabled. So as you can tell, we tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and allow a learning curve for the new owners. It was my last oil change and tire rotation I tried to do that I got handed a quote for $2500 in work to my 2006 Pilot with 108,000 miles on it. Granted I'm going to have this car for a while, but this is the estimate I looked at the parts prices and found a 50% mark up. It's the labor that's usually expensive at the auto shop right? I just couldn't go back after that and neither could my husband. He has been taking his vehicles there for 10 years before me. Long story short, I finally took my vehicle to another shop got four new tires, I did not need new TPMS for $100 ea tire, rear shocks or front struts were needed as Gray's had said. I did need a serpentine belt replaced which Gray's never caught. Tires, alignment, belt were $600 vs the $2500 Gray's estimate. I had never been given an estimate that high from Gray's. It was usually a do this now, this can wait kind of thing. The new shop I tried did that & gave me better prices. I used to have a 5 star rating on here for Gray's but after a good 20 visits, it's just not the same. I apologize to the original crew still hanging on & Diane, you really give 150%. The reasons why I didn't rate lower than 3 stars. And the reason why I kept coming back to give another chance even as my husband was saying "really, again." read more

I really wanted to like this place after reading great reviews about them. Although the staff are friendly, they misdiagnosed our car which nearly cost us a new transmission. They may be fine for other services, but they told us we will need a new transmission and that we can just keep driving the car without further damaging it until we have enough money to repair it (they also informed us that they cannot repair transmissions but would service out the job). Turns out we just needed our fluid flushed and if Grays would have appropriately evaluated our car, not given us bad advice, or just simply told us they cannot diagnose transmissions, we could have saved our transmission from permanent damage. read more

I've been bringing my vehicles to Gray's for 16 years now. I've even called them on a road trip from out of town when I was driving an RV and had some trouble. I told Rick at Gray's what was going on and what the nearby mechanic was telling me to do. He saved me from spending $350 from the random nearby mechanic. I adjusted the gas and driving for high altitude conditions and we drove successfully on for the rest of the trip. They don't recommend a bunch of unnecessary repairs when I come in for maintenance. Bruce, the owner, treats me like a close friend. Rick and Vern, two of the mechanics, have been working there since I first brought my car in for an oil change 16 years ago. Just got a call from Grays that our repair is $150.00 less than expected because they were able to use existing parts instead of swapping everything out for new. They could have easily charged the full amount, but instead they passed the savings on. We have taken our cars to Grays over our years in St. Louis and have always gotten friendly honest service. read more

They were flexible around my schedule in terms of dropping off and picking up my vehicle. They made me aware of the issues with my car and the opportunities for improvement without subjecting me to a 30-minute sales pitch. And their prices were reasonable. I've dealt with Gray's for 5 or 6 years now- and I have to say, starting out about 2010 they were great. I love supporting my local businesses, especially the mom and pop places ( you just get better service ) With that being said, I will never give them our business ever again. I can even break it down for you- The owner is a nice man. He is a decent person. But they do want your money. Diane, the desk clerk- has no idea what is going on, is not knowledgeable, and quite frankly, has poor people skills. Chris the mechanic is also a decent human ( they should make him the clerk & probably give him a raise) . Rick, or Rich? Gave me false information about how I should keep my car and keep putting money into it and what do ya know... I had to spend over 2,000 in the upcoming months shortly thereafter. Just recently he also flat out told me that he didn't know what was wrong with the car and that he didn't want to take the time to look into it to figure it out. Then they actually had the nerve to charge me for diagnostics when I could've had it done for free at Autozone or AAA! But hey, I guess they have to pay for that new fancy sign out front. Do not waste your time. Highly dissatisfied and we will not be giving them our business anymore. read more

From MN, so we had to use yelp to find a good auto repair shop. I found THE nicest one around. I called to see if they had time to diagnose a problem with our 08 odyssey that kept draining the battery. It was the day before thanksgiving and when I called, they told me they may be too busy to look at it. He asked me to hold, then came back and said stop by, he'll squeeze me in. Getting there, I now realized I was talking to the owner Bruce Gray. After getting there, I realized how swamped they really were. They had my vehicle in the shop within 30 minutes and bruce himself was working on it. He came and got me and asked if he could show me what was wrong. He didn't have the part it needed, so explained exactly how he planned on getting me on the road and when I was back home, what I needed to do to repair it properly. I was so thankful that he got us in, my daughter and I were treated with impeccable service, customers in the waiting room also shared with how awesome it was to have an honest repair shop for regular service schedules for their vehicles. I was there for about 90 minutes, actually got to know the owner a little bit, and oh by the way.....he crumpled up the bill at the end and told me to drive safe. What a class act Mr. Bruce Gray! How good does a place have to be to keep us coming back for 30+ years? We started going to Grays when we had a '68 Bonneville - then a Champ - then a Mazda - then an Oldsmobile station wagon - then another Oldsmobile station wagon - then a Malibu and a Taurus and now a Buick and a CRV. The Malibu was new, but all the rest were used cars that Gray's kept in shape till they couldn't go any farther. We've never felt that a repair was pushed on us, or that our safety wasn't first priority. We've given their name out confidently over the years, knowing that the mechanics are top-notch and the business is run with honest integrity. They even have a soda fountain! read more

If I could give 100 stars I would. My fiancé is in the military and we were traveling from richmond, va to Colorado Springs. Needless to say we were tight on time when our car decided to screw up. We took it to Dobbs, which is the biggest piece of crap place I have ever been. They said it would cost 3,500 and 3-4 days. After searching for another place we ran across grays. Not only did they fix everything for us the next day they charged us only $1100 and also gave us a ride to the metro to get back to our hotel that was in Illinois. Not only that but they sent pictures when they found other things wrong so we knew they were honest. They saved bad parts and let us get under the car to see what was going on. The owner also went out of his way to get us an axel by the next morning. Truly some of the greatest people I have ever encountered. If I lived in St Louis I would NEVER go anywhere else!! It's hard to know where to start with this review. Everyone, starting with Diane who answers the phone, is professional, helpful and really good at what they do. The first car I brought in was my 30++ year old Corvette; my first surprise was when they didn't try to gouge me for a list of things they'd "like" to do to the car, instead, they checked out the battery and things I had asked for, gave me some advice and sent me on my way without even trying to sell me a battery that I didn't need. Next, I took in my mother's car; once again, I found I was dealing with honest, fair and caring mechanics. Recently, I brought in another car at the last minute on a Friday afternoon - I was afraid the brakes were going bad. Rather than sending me on my way without any help because they were too busy, they took a minute to check out the brakes and let me know exactly what was going on. Since then I have moved farther away, but continue to take my cars there because they are worth the drive. This place is awesome! My fuel pump failed in the evening and I had to have my car towed. The first place I went to was booked for the rest of the week so I was referred to Gray's. The owner was very friendly and honest and gave me a quote over the phone and said he could work on it the next day. I had my car towed there by 11:30 AM and he gave me a call at 3:00 PM saying they had already completed it because they had some extra time. As a bonus, he also gave me a discount on the part which was much better quality than the generic replacements they can order. I am extremely impressed with their honesty, fairness and professionalism. I would highly recommend this shop to my friends and family. read more

Very disappointed in the service received. I was in town for a high school reunion and my Subaru Outback's head gaskets blew. I paid over $3,500 for the repair and got back to Colorado and the engine had no oil. As this was not a problem before and I blew an engine as a result, I felt that some compensation might have been available. The owner wanted to talk to my mechanic and my mechanic didn't want to get into a "my word versus their word" argument about how compression changes after a head gasket replacement. I took the vehicle to another mechanic in Denver who replaced the engine and stated that whoever did the head gasket rebuild didn't know what they were doing. I called the owner back to give him my new mechanic's phone number and now he refuses to call me back. I spent almost $4,000 to replace the engine. So Grays cost me $3,500 for trip back to Denver. I don't know if it's because I'm from out of town or because I'm an Asian, but Grays' took advantage of me. Don't take your Subaru there unless you live in town and are able to go back for what they messed up on in the first place!!! read more
