I have something of a goat-like countenance when it comes to walking, so I'm forced to purchase a new pair of shoes every year or so as I'm constantly wearing mine out. It's always a sad day when I realize that "the time" has come, as shoe shopping is always a huge pain in the butt and after all that walking, my shoes and I have usually forged a bond. Gravity Pope is one of my first stops when I'm in the market for new shoes, but I don't return here happily. While the selection is excellent and very diverse, I've had poor experiences with the service. It's definitely a more upscale, "Kits" crowd, and I feel like people who are dressed more expensively are usually those that are fawned over. I've seen people trying on pair after pair of shoes with nothing but the most attentive service, but I've never personally had such an experience. I'm not a high roller by any means, but a good pair of shoes is important to me. I've often been unattended to for long stretches of time, while I clutch a shoe waiting for an employee to even cast a glance my way so I can ask for a size. Coming in here is anxiety-inducing for me, to say the least. I usually walk out exasperated and shoeless after not even being able to get somebody's attention to try something on, although one time I happened to wander in here on a day they were having a sale and scored myself a nice pair of flats for a good price! read more

Great shoes. Poor service. I would love to give this store a 5 star review however when paying what you do for anything here, you expect 5-star service and that is not what you receive. Unfortunately the 'supervisors' are not trained in customer service nor empowered to make decisions. I have been waiting three weeks for an order to come in for kerbside pick up. I made a phone call Saturday may 27th to inquire after two weeks of no call to pick up my order, at this time I spoke to Lindsay who told me that she would be leaving a message for the manager and I would be receiving a call back The next day. Today June 2 I called back to follow up on the lack of follow up, to which I was passed off to an assistant manager who said he had no idea what was going on and he had not been in since Saturday when I made the initial inquiry. I've bought many shoes at Gravity Pope over the years, especially in the Edmonton and Calgary stores. As others have noted the selection is definitely great. But the service? Well...the Vancouver store has the worst, in my opinion. I've been in twice in the last few months intent on spending money, but came away empty handed. Both times I had no one acknowledge me (during quiet weekday hours) and had to walk up to employees with handfuls of shoes to get my sizes. Although they did retrieve them for me, they made me feel like I was inconveniencing them. I suppose I did interrupt the conversation amongst themselves, and the guy checking himself out in the mirror, so maybe it was my bad...but I thought they are there to you know, help. The last time I went in they only had my size in one of the shoes I requested, and did not offer to check the other stores, or even ask what I was looking for and suggest alternatives. I don't want someone to fawn over me (yes there's such as thing as too helpful, aka pushy) I just wanted to buy some damn shoes! I can only imagine what the interview process here is like. "No sorry, you seem like you're actually interested in helping customers so there's no way we can hire you. We're only looking for sullen, disinterested employees here." read more

I lived in Kits for 10 years and have been to the store millions of times. Never have I been tempted to purchase anything. Sorry, once I was, but the same shoes were 20% cheaper in Winners than GP sale...Anyhoo, I love classic styles, and their selection severely lacks that. I don't even bother going in anymore. Besides, shoe stores never have size 5.5. I now shop online in US stores that have giant selection as far as sizes and styles go. Vancouver shoe stores in general are a huge disappointment as far as size/style availability and price go. And Gravity Pope is no exception. read more

I had a terrible experience at Gravity Pope last week. I went in and told them I was looking for waterproof ankle boots and the salesperson I was talking to pretty much told me that she didn't know which boots were waterproof and that I should look at their website where I could filter by 'waterproof'. A number of terrible things about this. (1) When the boots at your shop cost $300+, your salespeople should be experts in the product. (2) It's Vancouver! Waterproofness has got to be an important factor to know about your footwear. (3) In a time when retail is struggling to stay relevant cuz everyone is shopping online, don't tell someone to go to your website when they are IN your shop. (4) As it turns out, you can't filter the online search by waterproof. So...big fat no to Gravity Pope from me! read more

This is review is mainly about the staff and a particular experience. Other than that, the clothing and shoes are great. I popped in one evening and saw a pair of shoes that I knew well. It was the same pair I had seen on sale at a warehouse sale a while back but did not purchase and regretted it. I then relayed this story to the staff, a young male and female, and they felt pity on me. So much so that I was offered an additional 15% off the sale price. I was told that they may be going on deeper discount soon and that they would hold the shoes for me. They were so sweet! One of them actually put a little note on the shoe box explaining that I should get the 15% off the sale price for anyone else that would be ringing them through. I got a call the next day actually and the shoes had indeed gone an extra 30% off. So I was busy calculating in head how much the shoes would be with the discount. They would still be about $130 more than I had seen them on sale for at the warehouse sale but I liked them and really regretted not buying them so I thought I should get them. I went back a couple days later and neither of the two sales people were there. It was in fact a manager. When she pulled out the shoe box she began to discard the little note with the extra 15% discount and I said "oh, no the 15% is on top of the sale price". She looked really taken aback and totally incredulous. When I explained, she didn't take my word at all (even though there is a note on the box! lol obviously I did not slip this behind the till when she was not looking). Anyways, this manager called the poor staff members at home to ask them if they offered me this discount. Well, if your manager calls you at home on your day off and asks you if you offered someone a discount you'll obviously say no. So the staff member lied and said it was not offered. I understood why he did it but I still felt crappy. Made me look ridiculous. Anyways she hemmed and hawed and so I was like, look if you aren't able to do it, no big deal. And she was like "no, no I'll give it to you" but sounded as if I was twisting her arm. I was like "are you sure?" She made me feel really bad. So then there was a problem with the debit machine. It was just hanging. I tried paying a couple ways and nothing would go through. (i know what you're thinking, it wasn't my card.) She said she would call the company and then give me a call in a few minutes. She called back about an hour later and said she could not honor the deal. So the whole thing just left a sour taste in my mouth. I rarely shop in person and tend to shop for everything online. I guess I should stick to that formula. . read more

Great selection of shoes but very expensive comparing to online stores. For example, they never gave real discount for camper shoes and one of models is sold by 190$ plus tax. I found same shoes on Amazon just 80 $, I just went there, tried the shoe for the correct size than I ordered from Amazon. Also my wife like another Camper which is 160, and we found same shoe on Amazon just 70$. It costs us 80+70+25+50Tax=225$ for two shoes. Don't forger 50$ will turn back to you after 3 months. read more

There is two parts to the store: shoes store and the clothing. It's large, therefore, prepared to spend some time in here. It's a shoe and clothing heaven. If you're a shoe whore...this is your place. They have many different styles of shoes in varying prices. Their staff is helpful. The clothing side of it, although basic, they do hold some timeless value to them which means that you can wear them year after year. Neutral colors are always the best if you're not sure what to wear at what event. read more

This store is fantastic. Real people. Real style. Real quality. I have always found the store to be incredibly busy whenever I walk in (especially so on the weekends) and I've come to the conclusion that there is a reason for it: urban metropolitans to adventurous travellers alike know exactly where to go to stretch out on the proverbial retail therapy couch. Every time my girlfriend and I walk by, she pulls me in and guides me though the gamut of merchandise like she was on a runway. When she is cordially attended to, she struts around in pairs that could exhaust a thesaurus' worth of adjectives, but secretly... what I'm really there for is myself. As a fella I have always found it particularly difficult to fill a style criteria that stretches the boundaries of my business casual every day wardrobe, but I have FOUND a safe place to do so in this store. With brands that I know and love and those that I don't know and love, I know I can come in and allow myself to be lead by the ever patient sales staff to wear the lifestyle I live. My girlfriend, my fellow weeknd shop-oholics, and myself agree: the shoe fits at Gravity Pope. read more

Super nice staff and obviously stocked with a superb selection of well-constructed, stylish footwear, and of course, a higher price point. But amazing deals can be had when they have sales - ie. current deal is 40% off the sale price, which can get you (or me) $300 Italian boots for less than $100. Yep. True! The only reason this store is not heaven on earth is that shoes would be free in heaven. Sigh....I love this store....can't always afford it but I love it. Good selection of leather shoes, but lacking in variety. Alright, I know there is just so much you can do with leather, but the majority of brands/ styles here all look very similar. It's hard to find a pair that really "wows" me in terms of the style. Service is hit-or-miss. I would say the majority of staff are willing to lend a helping hand. Tangine (sp?) was incredibly kind and helpful, best sales associate I have met there. I had been shopping for Frye boots but it took a number of transfers until I found one that had no flaws. Previous pairs had stitching that was badly falling apart, patches of glue on leather, etc. so I would suggest checking your item carefully before purchasing, especially because they don't offer refunds. While trying on my boots, I was looking at the cracked leather and the sales associate told me not to worry about it, and proceeded to scratch the boots with her nails to show me that scratches will happen and it will look okay because it's part of that worn out look. Umm, not sure where on earth it is acceptable to go ahead and scratch something that your customer is about to buy.... I was shocked. For similar leather shoe stores, I think Rowan Sky and Umeboshi are comparable. read more

When you love shoes, you appreciate the variety of lines they carry. That's why people flock here. It embodies the West Coast shoes-lover who wants something different. Now it's a bit of focus for my ADD-esque shopping syndrome that I've self-diagnosed. But that just means the fact the the shoes are scattered around the room is a bit much at times. I like my styles packed in one area, my brands clumped together -- not dotted around like little colourful jelly beans that spilled out of a jar. Overall though, a place that carries vegan shoes and a throw back to 1930's flappers is good in my books. read more

Awesome shoes! I've bought far more shoes here since discovering it a year ago, than I have in the past five years at other shoe stores. Even when I spend far too much on a pair, I have yet to regret it afterwards. I see some bad reviews about the staff, but I now have a few favourites I recognize when I go in and they never let me down. If possible don't go on the weekend, if you stick with the weekdays, they aren't as busy and you have a more relaxed shopping experience. read more

I was so excited when GP opened in Vancouver - best selection of shoes in town. Trouble is the shopping experience is painful. I used to come in with my daughter all of the time but it just takes too long to be helped. The hipster staff is too narcissistic to take notice of many of their customers. I don't really get it because Kits is a pretty Lululemon neighbourhood so I don't know who's identifying with the lower east side uniform that they all sport. I rarely shop there anymore but am a regular online customer because I know what I want and how the brands fit. Ordering is easy and they seem to carry more stock on the web than they do in store. Bottom line? Order online. read more

The store has great products, but completely over priced. If you find something you like, you can definitely find it cheaper online somewhere else. Even with their sales, it is still more than regular price somewhere else. Another problem I encountered was...I fell in love with a pair of boots and they only had it in one location. Any other store would be happy to ship the pair of boots over for your to try to see if they fit properly. Even if you had to pay up front first, they would return your money if they didn't fit properly. BUT nope.... GP likes to charge your credit card, then send the boots over, and if they don't fit, "too bad" you only get a STORE CREDIT. YES, people, ONLY A STORE CREDIT! So they can be $500-700 shoes, but because you bought them, and that's their store policy, they will NOT return your money. I think its completely crazy! Of course I would keep them if they fit, but if they didn't and I'm still sitting at your store, you are not giving my money back?? I think they need to re-evaluate their "store policy" as I find that they do this to rip customers off. Definitely an unsatisfied customer! I would rather shop in the States, at least they have better customer service! read more

I suppose I'm a bit of a Gravity Pope detractor; they do carry a lot of really nice shoes, boots and sandals from lines such as Camper, Fluevog, Steve Madden, Audley and Giraudon, but I think it bugs me that this place is just so trendy and so expensive. In other words, I think that I always feel like I could go in here, spend a lot of money, and then not be able to wear my purchases in a year's time because they'd be dated. But, they do have quality shoes in here, and some of what they carry is pretty unique. The service could be a bit more friendly, but maybe the salespeople always sense my lack of Gravity Pope enthusiasm. Shoe karma, you know. Anyway, if you are looking for something precious, something trendy or something expensive, this may be the place for you. read more

Great Shoes! Poor Service!!!!!!!!! I constantly keep going back to this store because they have great stock and it is hard to find some of these brands in the city but I have had my final experience there as of last night... I had been contacted via telephone regarding a 25% off sale from 7-9pm at the store and I was unable to go. Earlier in the morning I popped in the store and a sales associate allowed me to purchase rain boots with the discount. I was happy this was offered to me, but I did have to ask for it, which is fine... Later that evening I thought about the sale and wanted to pick up an early xmas gift for a friend.. I called the store and spoke to the manager and explained I was unable to attend at 7pm would I be able to come an hour early? she replied yes of course no problem.. I got there just before 6 and took less than 5 mins to pick out the shoes.. I notified the sales associate that I had just spoken to someone 10 mins ago on the phone regarding the sale and the sales associate had given me attitude to make me feel as if he didn't believe me.. so then he asked me for my name to check the list of names who are only entitled to this sale.. which I was never asked in the early morning.. I said my name and he replied by saying I WAS on the list.. gave me an awkward look and questioned my name.. I felt weirded out and replied by saying yes thats me he then said "he wanted to ACTUALLY confirm it was me because he was unsure" he then asked for me phone number which I had just gotten a new phone a day prior and asked to get it in my car which was parked outside he then said "yea sure...." I couldn't believe his rude and awkward attitude towards me! I then said forget it as he wouldn't even let me go outside to get my phone from my car or ask my friend too.. I felt he wanted my fingerprint to purchase a pair of shoes.. I didn't know this store has a VIP guest list to purchase shoes like its the hottest club in town! After I spoke to the manager who was apologetic, the sales associate stated his case as if he was asking for my information for after the sale for mailing address to send deals yet the sales associate hadn't even rung up my shoes. The manager then tried to explain that was standard policy which wasn't even the case I was complaining about.. I'd rather not shop here till they change there snarly attitude towards customers... Awesome selection, love their shoes. However I find their customer service not so great. 3 times, I have put my name down for a special order, and I have never been called back. When I call months later to follow up, nobody seems to know what is going on. In the store, the staff can sometimes be limited, and nobody really is that nice. read more

Despite the reviews of terrible service, I agree with some other posts and had great service. I believe my sales associate was Julie and she was helpful and patient to bring me at least 8 pairs of shoes of various sizes and styles. They are now having a great sale and because they are able to hold the 2 pairs of shoes for me while I head to an appointment, I returned and ended up purchasing 3 pairs. I learned a couple of new brands since I was unfamiliar with them and I am a satisfied customer. I will return especially sale time! :) read more

This store is so great. While the clothing can be a bit pricey the sales are worth the wait and the staff is amazing. Everyone is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about what they carry. Went there just now to try on and potentially purchase a pair of classic Frye and Camper Boot, neither of which they had in a size 11, the most common men's size. The girl would have left it at that - sorry, we don't have them in your size - and it took some prodding for her to go to the computer to see if they had them in one of their Alberta stores or on order. Her reasoning: "we only do that for people if they're really interested". My answer: "what makes you think I would want to try them on if I'm not really interested??" So she trodded off and when she came back, she curtly advised that it would take 8-10 days - or longer - to bring one in, but only if a 20% deposit was paid up front. Fine. I don't have a problem with that. Then came the killer: "But if you don't buy the shoes, the deposit is non-refundable - only store credit." Now, I happen to own a high end, award-winning retail store here in town, and close to 20 years, for that matter. That's the most ridiculous policy I have ever heard of, and I told her so. And from a shoe store, at that. I told her if the shoes fit, I'll buy them. If not, I want my deposit back. I had a leather jacket brought in by Danier last year under a similar deal. I paid the deposit, the jacket fit, I bought it. Otherwise, I would have gotten my deposit back. With her, it was no deal. She just works there, she doesn't make the policies. Neither was she really interested in what I had to say, for the same reason. If I ran my store that way, I doubt I'd still be in business. Considering they don't have a size 11 in two of the most classic boots, at the beginning of boot season, I'm starting to think things aren't going so well for them either. As a local merchant, I make a point of buying locally to support the local specialty retail scene. I live around the corner from GP, so that's where I started. I'm sure I will find the boots at another store, one that deserves my business. At just shy of $300.00 per boot, that's a pretty good - and quick - sale going to someone else - plus my repeat business. read more
