It was fairly good and clean gym, they do get super busy in the evenings and have time limits for machines (during busy times), but oh well. I did take taekwondo there too, though though I wasn't too keen on the teaching style. I LOVE being a member of Immortal Fitness. 1.5 years ago, I decided I really needed to get off my…read morebutt and into the gym. but I also knew I needed 3 things to be successful: 1.) Real, customized support and personal training (to help me overcome my fear of the gym and limiting beliefs around my athleticism) 2.) A gym in walking distance of my house in Elmwood Berkeley (because if I needed to get in my car and find parking, I would never go - though to be fair, there is easy parking around Immortal) 3.) Something that wouldn't break the bank, but would be an investment (so I would feel compelled to go regularly) Immortal Fitness (and especially my amazing trainer and gym owner Matt) checked all of those boxes times 1,000! Matt is not only a knowledgeable and skilled trainer, he is also a walking pep talk. He pushes me (both on trying a higher weight to lift - I am now up to 200lbs on the leg press!) but to be my favorite self in my life and business too. I frequently walk out of our 2x weekly 30-minute sessions feeling strong, fired up, and ready to face the day. While the gym isn't fancy, it has everything that you need, including a supportive community. If you are looking for a local, affordable gym in the Elmwood/telegraph neighborhood, Immortal Fitness is for you!

We have now become regulars to their zoom offerings and while not the same as in person, having become familiar with Anya and Ashley, they are both very good about calling us out on adjustments to our form or slacking off. What I like most about these classes is that they always offer an option with some at home equipment if you have it (bands, weights, chairs, balls, etc) or alternative options if you don't have these things. I personally prefer full-body days but I also enjoy showing up to class not knowing what to expect. That element of surprise keeps you on your toes. This is probably more of a thing for classpass users as they don't say what the theme is for each class. Thanks Sweat for keeping me somewhat active during this crazy time.

They followed up with a discounted class, and my friend pushed me to join with her again, so boom. The 60 minute workout was half tread and half rowing/strength. The tread pushes me because I don't normally run. I do wish there was more of a focus on the strength portion, although do know have solely strength classes, but not many. I ended up buying a 5 class pack, which honestly I don't know if I would have done without having a workout buddy that's into it. But since I do, it's a great workout. The staff has been so friendly and accomodating. They have a shower, a few bathrooms and a few lockers. Overall, I have enjoyed OTF to push me to do longer, more intense running workouts. I look forward to trying the strength classes.

Due to me being completely new, I decided to get a wearable with my membership. It was originally $199 but I asked if I can get a student discount which brought it down to $189. The wearable was a pretty steep price and the person who checked me out did not tell me about the May promo they had going on (iirc half off a wearable) so I decided to get the wearable, towel, bag, and OTF water bottle pack which was around $129, which I would not have done without the wearable. I saw the May promo on the back of the bathroom door after class. There were times that I needed help same day so I texted the front staff hours before the class and they disregarded my question, which was disappointing for my first good impressions of the staff. Looking out from a monetary perspective (not informing a new joiner about promos) vs actually caring about a member (informing new joiner about promos and texting answers back to questions) would have made me return to OTF in the future, but as the saying goes, you can only skin a sheep once. I would join with the South Bay OTF studios as they seem less opportunistic, but again, the coaches here were amazing!
