I did not expect to learn about new foods at the gym, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I love this gym (and the trainers) for the same reasons everyone else does: it's an incredibly kind and supportive place where people from all walks of life come to lift weights for a multitude of reasons. After reading the other 75 five-star reviews, I struggled to think of what hasn't been mentioned. So, consider this a resounding +1 on every positive thing said in every other review. Beyond that, it's worth highlighting just how responsible and respectful Bay Strength's COVID policies have been. Early in the pandemic, they kept lifting in a park and then opened an outdoor location. After moving back indoors, they implemented reasonable mask requirements, which is more doable in a powerlifting gym. They gradually lifted mask requirements as CDC guidance was updated. The gym also has excellent ventilation, air purifiers, and fans running all the time. While I have been exposed to COVID here, I have never actually gotten sick as a result. Doubling down on the "great community" theme (because it really is that great): * They do mock meets every six months or so (vids on Instagram to get a feel for that) * They have had a tie-dye party * They threw a karaoke party * People put interesting (occasionally hilarious) polls on one of the whiteboards, often with amazing artwork * Have I mentioned how positive and supportive everyone is? I know what you're thinking: "75 five-star reviews, and not a single complaint? I don't believe it." So, to make this a little more believable, I thought about all my complaints over the last couple weeks (and asked a few other lifters): * They scheduled the tie-dye party for a day I had another commitment * I felt guilty for whining about missing the tie-dye party when they sincerely responded by saying they could schedule another one "for anyone who missed the last one" * The music is occasionally not what I want to listen to, and it might take seconds to walk over and change it. I haven't actually had to yet, because other lifters changed it before I got up, but it could happen! * There's a super friendly trainer who loves jokes. Not naming names, but Jeremy, we've heard that one before! * They have a bowl of Smarties in case you need some sugar (which is great), but I'm convinced the different colored Smarties are not actually different flavors * Sometimes I crave a smoothie, but they only have filtered water in three temperatures: hot, cool, or cold Oh, and with the help of the trainers and community here, I was able get stronger than I ever thought I would be. Without any injuries.

Bay Strength values, front and center!

I've been a member at Bay Strength for about a year, coming in 3x/ week to build strength and stamina and keep myself as mobile as possible as I get older. I was seeking a gym that was inclusive, welcoming, and free of diet culture B.S. I have absolutely found that in Bay Strength. I am able to work out at an incredibly well-equipped gym, with a great community, and fantastic coaches. No one's out here telling me I can't be a fat person working out if I don't want to lose weight. I'm free to focus on my goals, without having to dodge someone trying to convince me to join a weight loss challenge or buy some diet supplements. We need more spaces like this where people can focus on being stronger, and I'm glad Bay Strength is among those leading the way.

She thought of fun themes for exercises-- like creating a set of exercises that involves going to the beach, surfing, and doing burpees and starfish jumps. I don't know if the story made sense-- but it did make the exercises more fun. Anne has a spark for creativity and making activity and exercise fun. When I started, I don't think I could run a half mile without dying. Now, I have several 5k races under my belt, and I'm hoping to do a 10k before the year is up. I still remember my first workout - my arms were so dead that I could barely turn the steering wheel while driving home. It was hard to imagine continuing to do it, but everyone was incredibly nice and welcoming. I was tired of feeling weak and tired, so I made myself go back. And back again and again, and now it's not so hard to make myself go. Once, I forgot to bring my workout clothes to work with me, so I went in what I was wearing (knee high rain boots, leggings, and a short-sleeved shirt). This is the kind of person Lift & Sprint turns you into, even if you thought it would never happen. The workouts won't be easy. But they are only 45 minutes. If Amy has had too much coffee on a Monday, you may find yourself thinking "omg, what have I done? Make it stop." But it's only 45 minutes, and trust me, you can survive 45 minutes.

And I've tried a lot of different types of workouts.... Things I love about Lift and Sprint: - you get to workout outdoors (watching the sunrise from the track is way better than a dark smelly gym) - every workout is different, which keeps things fun and interesting - they accommodate all ages, levels, and abilities (they trained me through two pregnancies) - great community vibe (no egos or BS) - close attention to form and technique (almost feels like personal training but in a group setting) Lift and Sprint has given me more than just a place to workout, but has helped me to develop healthy habits at home in a way that has permeated my life and overall well-being!

But omg I am too old for the misleading and covert sales attempts First of all, if having you hold a little machine with metal handles was a legit way to measure your physical fitness or cardio strength or lean muscle vs fat, I think on many decades of doctor visits I would have encountered it! This felt like 100 percent an attempt to leverage people's trust in technology and fear of the wellness industries standards too make me buy more services from this gym. Did I mention I'm too old to have a young man and his machine tell me about my body and health goals? They told me when I joined i would get a free personal training session that would tell me how to use machines ( i expressed repeatedly that i don't need help with goal setting, good on that, thanks!) Instead the supposed personal training session was an elaborate sales pitch. Did I mention I'm too old? The trainer had me do some exercises and I guess evaluated something but to get any details on how to use the machines, which I stated many many times was my only reason for the session , I was invited to give up more of my money and time. Luckily, I'm old, so all I wasted was about 3o minutes instead of also spending extra money or having random people with pseudo scientific machines and full in the blank worksheets make me doubt myself and my body. I'll keep coming bc working out feels good and makes me feel healthy but I'm aware I'm walking into an attempted scam every time I enter.
