Everything I said in my previous review still stands, I just want to highlight how awesome the trainers have been during the last year plus as we've all had to negotiate the COVID pandemic. They've adapted to teaching a mix of in-person and online classes and they've done an excellent job of making things challenging while keeping workouts accessible and adaptable as needed for everyone's personal situation. All of the trainers here are excellent, but most of the classes I take are with Deanna. Training with her is an incredibly positive experience--she is completely committed to helping her clients succeed, and not just in the gym. And on those days when my tank is empty or I'm not with it for whatever reason she's completely understanding and is able to adjust things to meet me where I'm at so I still get a good workout in. A lot of it may be behind the scenes, but she works just as hard as her clients at helping them achieves their goals. Phoenix Gym is an incredibly positive, supportive, and judgement-free zone, and being a member here has been a life-changing experience. read more

Kelly is bad ass. She's tough and gorgeous at the same time! And she's super awesome to be around! So the building is Krav Maga but you enter and go to the right of the building. Bootcamp has it's own deal. I came here for a free trial bootcamp class (and I'm hooked and coming back on Friday). Luckily it was 6 ladies and myself. I really liked that it was small and everyone was friendly. It started with some jumprope, followed by push ups (and repeat 5 times). Then we got our hands wrapped and put on the boxing gloves! We hit punching bags. Pretty fun to feel like Muhammed Ali. :) my knuckles are red. Boxing is only on Wednesdays. Then we did squats in between the different types of boxing moves. Then we got out some yoga mats and did different types of crunches. Sadly I forgot where my abs once were :( but I'm hoping to find them soon. Anyway, tons of fun! read more

My wife and I have been training here for a few months now. I reckon we're somewhere between beginner and intermediate, and we've come to really look forward to our sessions with Kelly. She's extremely knowledgable, patient, energetic, friendly, inspiring, and of course hella strong. Her guidance has really honed our workouts, and her general knowledge of the body and how it moves is insanely helpful. Really good place, no bs, highest possible recommendation. read more

I've been going to the 6:30am bootcamp classes for just a couple of weeks but I am impressed with Dmitri and Kelly's creativity with exercises and I always leave feeling great, even if a bit handicapped. (In a good way!) I have experienced only one other bootcamp in the Bay Area and this one blows the other out of the water completely! I love that Wednesdays are boxing days-- it's a great workout and it's nice to mix it up a bit. I never thought I'd be donning wraps and gloves to throw some punches but it's awesome. People in the 6:30 class are of all differing fitness levels and capabilities and everyone is nice and lighthearted. I really like when two trainers are present because they are able to roam and make sure you have good form and get the most out of the workout. I look forward to trying out the Saturday classes also. It's good stuff, man. Good stuff. read more

After 40+ years of good intentions, I've been working out at Phoenix for the last 10 months. I was unable to do a push-up, literally almost threw-up when asked to do burpees or swing a kettlebell, etc. You name it, I could not do it. Well -- after twice a week work-outs I've learned that I'm capable of doing more than 100 push-ups in a workout session, that swinging and snatching 35lb kettlebells is vaguely fun, and working out with barbells and dum bells is addictive. I'm STRONG. Really strong. I can pick-up couches like they are magazines, and have on occasion found myself foregoing the carts at IKEA because it's faster to just grab the dresser box and carry it out on my own. It's interesting that an investment of like 2 hours a week of training at Phoenix could have such a monumental impact on my level of fitness. It's fun to workout with Kelly and Juliet, and if you go and try, the results are frankly shocking. And no lectures about what not to eat, etc. These ladies talk buttercream frosting and chocolate addiction like the treat addicts that they are! Kelly and Juliet are fantastic. I give them my highest recommendation...... I went from a weak, unfit mother of two, to being 40+ year old mom that you don't want to meet in a dark alley, because if you mess with me I'll tear you from limb to limb. (Not that I would want to -- because a) I'm still fundamentally a lazy person and b) the mess and all.... but I could and I would if it was needed.) read more

Couldn't effing shrug after Juliet's workout on Wednesday, and I went back for more on Friday. Yeah. Still can't walk that great, bend my legs all the way, or go down stairs without looking like a little old lady. Don't tell Kelly though, because she'll take it as a challenge that Juliet's workouts might be harder than hers, stand over you while you do it, and smile the whole time! Badass trainers, badass workouts - but still totally accessible. When I started here, I could not DO a sit up, much less one while someone held my feet down. Or a real push up. Honest. Now? I could do 15 push-ups cold, and can do 8 reps of 15-20 crunches in 15 minutes AFTER running around the block non-stop. Yeah, I'm kind of a Badass. I love these guys. I've been a member of many a gym in my life and Phoenix is the only ones who keep me coming back for more. The monthly rate is reasonable, or you can do drop-in, per day rate. Not only do they kick my ass three times a week, they never fail to make me laugh - and that includes the people who take the class as well. I've been going since July and I already feel like a BADASS. They's giving BIRTH to fitness I tell you. Did I mention I'm turning into a badass? read more

After seeing all the great yelp reviews, I decided to give Phoenix Gym a try. Having tried the boot-camp classes for two weeks now, I'm a fan! I really like the idea of working out without knowing the agenda for the day. I've tried classes in other gyms in the past, but ended up dreading the work-out due to its repetitive nature. Kelly, the trainer, is easy-going and friendly, which is very helpful when you're new to the environment and the exercises. She'll go around while we do our exercises and give each person pointers or encouragements. The work-outs are rigorous, but not impossible. It's a great feeling to leave the gym invigorated and energized for the rest of the day (even if half of your body feels like it's going to fall off)! Last but not least, one of my favorite things is that the others enrolled in the class are not trying to compete with you or outshine you. They seem to me like a group who want to push themselves to do their OWN best, so you don't have to feel guilty or judged when you need a water break or a quick breather. I definitely recommend Phoenix Gym! read more

holy crap- that boot camp class is NO JOKE! the trainers are awesome- lots of personal attention, they make sure everyone is appropriately challenged & by the end of the hour you will feel a lovely combination of exhausted & exhilarated. as a bonus, the other folks in the class are all super friendly- a nice mix of hard core & mortals (like myself), but you don't get the competitive vibe. I've also done personal training with Kelly- 50 min solo & 30 min buddy sessions. they were in intense & challenging workouts, but she makes sure you are alternating between laughing, grunting & cursing-- while maintaining perfect form, of course. you definitely leave feeling like a badass. a sweaty & fatigued badass, but still... read more

Finding the right personal trainer is like finding the right therapist. There are some trials and tests, and some trepidation and skepticism, but once you find the right fit, you just know. And it can fill you with such joy and inspiration. That's what I've found at Phoenix Gym. Within the top five most life-changing moments of the past year, two of them happened at Phoenix. One is more general: My body rocks, and is rock-solid, and I am strong and fit and love the way my clothes feel on my body. (And yes, I still eat cheese by the pound.) The second is more specific: I was trying to snatch a 40-lb dumbbell, and couldn't, it was scary and my arm froze up and I knew I couldn't get it past my shoulder. Kelly stood right next to me and said, "I'm going to stand here, I'm going to spot you. You just think you can't do it. Don't think about your arm, think about your legs and hips and let your arm just float up. I'll be right here." So I tried. And I did it. That kind of achievement spreads confidence into so many other aspects of my life. I owe Kelly and Dmitri a huge amount of appreciation and adoration. I have even found myself lingering after class because I don't want to leave! Thanks to you two AND to all my fellow classmates, your sweet motivation and support has made this an awesome experience. Love!!! And breakfast after class never tasted so good. :) read more

Phoenix gym has got what you need. The trainers, Kelly, Dimitri and Juliet, give their everything to creating the most engaging, fun and challenging workouts I've yet to encounter. They offer a variety of classes and one on one personal training, so are bound to have something to fit into your schedule. If you're tired of boring as hell workouts on your ownsome or at other gyms: come to a couple classes at Phoenix and you'll be hooked in no time! read more

I love this place! The workouts combine body weight exercises (think push-ups and pull-ups) with fast paced weightlifting, and cardiovascular endurance training (like running and rowing). My heart rate stays high, my mind stays engaged, and my body does its best to keep up. The classes are small with lots of one-on-one attention from the trainers and advice on proper technique and form. They fixed a number of form problems I was having and improved my weightlifting instantly. And Kelly, Dmitri, and Juliet are hilarious - they keep you laughing so you forget about the pain. They offer sport specific training, personal training, and are starting to add classes. The Saturday morning class is lively, fun, and everyone is encouraging. I highly recommend it! read more

This gym is magic! The couple that runs it (the dynamite, hardcore, encouraging Dmitri-n-Kelly!), and my peer-worker-outers, are all fabulous and driven and focused. All the trainers are super professional and helpful, especially Laura! I've done CrossFit and the Y and pilates and running and Soul Cycle and Ice Chamber and you-name-it. I can go twice per week and I feel super strong and maintain my fitness. I can go three times a week and feel shredded. The classes are SO EFFICIENT! And all are super engaging, and torturous, in the best way. Hope you "like" burpees. And, the best news?! They've just started to offer a Sunday class from 1 to 2 p.m. As of Dec 2016. Gamechanger! I feel both pushed to be stronger (NOT, like, personal records and mega weight lifting at CrossFit - more HIIT) but also fully supported to take care of my body in whatever state it's in! DO IT! I work full time and have a 4-year old and this gym makes my life so much better! read more

Phoenix Gym is my happy place. The instructors are awesome and the workouts will kick your butt into gear! One of the instructors, Deanna - I have been working with her for years and she is one of the most committed, passionate, and positive instructors. Whether it be Krav Maga, HIIT, or weightlifting, she knows her stuff. She's motivated to help her students achieve their goals, even if it means involving herself in a bet to make it more fun! read more

It's finally happened - Phoenix Gym has their own space! And more classes! So.freakin.excited! The gym is spacious and chock full of equipment to take your fitness to the next level. Kelly is an incredibly talented trainer and programmer. She has a keen eye for form and so is great at injury-prevention and rehab. She really loves what she does and this comes across in her positive coaching and creative (read: challenging) workouts. Seriously, her programming is evil and yet everyone is fired up to work their assess off not just for themselves but also for her. I've been working out with Kelly for a long time and she has never disappointed me or programmed a "meh" workout. I always leave high on endorphins and physically spent. Just getting into fitness (after a long pause or ever)? That's fine. Kelly's workouts are accessible to all fitness levels. If you're new to this kind of workout, you can count on lots of one:one attention and high expectations. And she wasn't always a bad ass so she knows and appreciates how hard it can be to change your habits and body. Fitness phenom? Kelly loves to amp it up for you too. Class sizes are small, people are really friendly, Kelly is hilarious and there are classes every day! What are you waiting for?! Go! read more

Started with Phoenix about two months ago now. After many years of working out with a team and having since retired from that sport (rugby), I was longing to work out en masse once again. I wanted to be pushed, motivated and encouraged - by both the leaders and other participants - and this is precisely what I found at Phoenix Gym. The workouts are often circuits which focus on strength, power and aerobic fitness - all combined, always challenging, never predictable and using new-to-me tools such as kettle bells and boxing gloves. If you are looking for a gym, come give Kelly and Dimitri a try - they'll put you through the works with smiles, encouragement and high demands. read more

Phoenix Gym is awesome. I began to exercise for real for the first time in my mid 40s here. I was skeptical/nervous at first, but Kelly worked me through that phase and I continue to train with her 6 years later. She gets that people start from different places and have different goals. Mine was to stay healthy and build strength to get rid of neck/back pain. Kelly was smart about what she had me doing: she chose programs that strengthened what needed it without stressing what gets sore. I give this place major points for understanding regular folks as well as super serious fitness people. Ill never be a gym maniac but thanks to Kelly and team Ive got a regular exercise program, Im generally stronger and fitter, and a lot of my recurring upper back pain is gone. Meanwhile my wife now trains with Kelly too, and my daughter worked with Kelly after an injury. The vibe at Phoenix is positive and encouraging. Cant say enough good things! read more

I have been to every kind of gym. Truly. The big names, the little names, the neighborhood places, the chains. I have taken every kind of class since my exercise attention span is so very short. However, I never tire of my trainer Kelly at Phoenix. I've been with her 2 years--worked out with her when she was an employee somewhere else, loved her really, really challenging workouts mixed with wit, humor and an evil laugh. When she and the also-greatly-talented Dmitri and Juliet started their own gym, I followed them. One of the great things about Phoenix is the incredible personal attention, the ever-changing roster of exercises both indoor and outdoor (the other day I was doing pushups and stair running at a nearby loading dock--it was a beautiful day and Kelly took me outside to enjoy it), mixed with the keen education and knowledge of people who know how to take you to your peak fitness--they pay so much attention to form and progress, it's truly different from anywhere else you'll ever go. If you go to Phoenix, you will work really hard, sweat, be encouraged every step of the way, and each accomplishment will be noted and celebrated. You can come in at any level of fitness and experience, and they will take you right where you are, and start helping you become stronger, faster, and feel great. And in some ways best of all, you will never get bored because the variety in programming is great. Love them. Could not recommend them any more highly! read more

I guess I'm the exception to this one, because I was less than thrilled. Sorry to be the Debbie Downer because I love independantly owned businesses. I just thought that the trainers took themselves too seriously and were less than professional. I overheard one saying that if you don't throw up, you're not working out... yikes. I guess I'll stick to my aerobics classes, thanks anyway. read more

In an effort to get back in shape post baby, I came across Phoenix Gym in my various searches for a solution. I'm not terribly athletic, or I should say, I don't have a lot of self-motivation, so the set-up at Phoenix is perfect for me. The workouts are challenging, clearly explained and SO much fun. I've done the bootcamp classes with all three trainers and personal training with Kelly. All of the workouts make me feel superhuman...It's a really nice feeling to go from feeling mushy to lifting a barbell over my head. Something else I really like is that none of the trainers have ever come at me with a scale and tried to counsel me on weight loss...I hate that at gyms! It immediately makes me feel defensive, which insures that I never return. At Phoenix, the trainers and the other people in the classes are supportive of everyone's efforts at getting in shape. read more

Personal training with Kelly 3 times a week will get your fat a$$ in gear, for sure. She is a wonderful motivator, is sincere and genuinely committed to her work, and has a fantastic sense of humor. I have been going to Kelly for 4 weeks now, and have lost nearly 10 pounds, run a 5K, and developed muscles that I had no idea I even had. One of the best investments that I've ever made. I'm so appreciative of her! read more

I love Phoenix and think each of the trainers are amazing. I have done many different types of classes and belonged to a dozen gyms in my lifetime and this is the happiest I have been with an exercise regime, both in terms of results and how much fun I have while doing it. I have a tendency to be a little lazy and enjoy my sleep, but am happily climbing out of bed for the 6:30 am class, I don't know what higher regards I can give an exercise program. It is both challenging and enjoyable and I wish I could do it more often. You should definately give it a try. read more

Oh my god, my legs! Bootcamp is the best! I've been going for a few months now and I feel so much stronger! I was a trainer for 9 years and I have never had so much fun working out! I have never done the same workout twice! I do privates with Juliet (oh my god, my legs), and the bootcamps are taught by her, Kelly, and Dmitri. You don't need to be a brut to do it either. It is totally adjustable to your fitness level so you don't hurt yourself. In the classes there are three trainers there to keep an eye on form and keep you motivated. What I really love about this place is that I'm not focused so much on how I look or how much I weigh, I just really want to be strong and have a good time. It's really refreshing to just workout for the joy of it! All of the women I've met there are really nice and supportive too. I don't get a competitive vibe at all, when someone does something they haven't done before, everyone is really genuinely happy for them! Ignite your inner badass! read more

PS. I forgot to say that Kelly and Dimitri helped rehab my knee. I had tried everything before coming to boot camp -- yoga, physical therapy, chiropractic -- and had even contemplated surgery. After about 6 months with Phoenix, my knee pain was dramatically reduced and is now nearly gone. I may never fully recover from the injury, but boot camp has gotten me farther than I thought possible. read more

I *love* Phoenix. I have worked with all 3 trainers both in PT sessions & in bootcamp sessions and every workout has been great. The workouts are always at least 60 minutes long, the class sizes are perfect, and the trainers are fantastic. They always keep the workouts challenging but do-able, and each workout is unique so I never get bored with doing the same routine over and over again. I am in the best shape of my life and look forward to every workout at Phoenix. I know that I will work hard, sweat tons, learn new moves, improve my form and laugh my ass off at every session! read more

Kelly and Dmitri's workouts have been crucial to my physical and emotional health for the past ten years- I have worked out with them through two pregnancies, one divorce, and six hand surgeries (which really could have limited my ability to exercise, but they are experts at creative modifications)- they have always pushed me to my limits in this supportive "this sucks but you are going to do it anyway" style that has kept me centered and healthy through all kinds of challenges. The members here are serious about training- no stopping mid workout to take ab selfies at this gym-while also being supportive and genuinely a pleasure to be around. I have visited many gyms in the Bay Area thanks to Groupon- Crossfit, Orange Theory, Boxing- and Phoenix is by far the most intensive workout and the most encouraging and accepting atmosphere that I have experienced. read more

High level of intensity and training + a low level of drama = a perfect place to work your $#!& out. They bring their A game for training and you leave copious amounts of sweat. Its not a fitness cult. Its a place to train with real people. Do it. Do it now... read more

I've never worked out this hard in my life. I'm totally addicted, and at 43, I'm in the best shape of my life. And I owe it to Kelly and Dimitri. read more

I love this gym. Phoenix gym has three excellent trainers who are fun and will push you to do more than you would ever do on your own. They keep the work outs varied and challenging, yet totally do-able. They're all about fitness and you won't hear any of the cheesy shallow gym-isms I've heard at typical gyms. I think their bootcamp is fantastic, I've been hooked since I started. I'll even get up early in the morning just to go to their bootcamp. I can't recommend them highly enough - you'll have fun and get in great shape. read more

Kelly and Dmitri made it possible for me to bare my arms publicly, and with pride for the first time in decades. I started with one on one sessions to prepare for a very public event, and in 6 weeks they whipped me into presentable shape. Since then, I've kept going to the group classes and the results have continued to impress me. It's nice to turn a head or two again, and not rely on the sweatshirt cover-up anymore. The sweat sessions are hard, but they both watch very carefully and make sure form is good and the exhaustion level is not going beyond humane. They really appreciate and are very encouraging when they see you putting out your best effort. They can totally tell when you're being lame. That makes it much harder to slack off. They are an amusing and energetic pair to start the day with. They also NEVER make you feel like crap for not making it to work-outs, and they are very flexible with scheduling one on one training. For a frequent traveler - they are the only gym that has ever worked with any long term consistency for me. read more

Kelly and Dimitri are awesome trainers. They're really warm, encouraging people, but they don't go easy on you -- which I think is the best possible combination for a trainer. The other people in the classes are friendly and chill, and so it's just a great place to work out hard, while having a lot of fun, and not feeling intimidated or out of place. If you're looking for a good bootcamp to wake you out your fitness stupor, this is the place. read more

Still LOVING this workout. I have been slowly seeing some weight come off, and haven't been dieting - just attending classes three days a week. Thank you Kelly and Juliet for being great role models and even better motivators. read more

Owners Dmitri and Kelly are smart and delightful. They have created a down-to-earth space for serious workouts that draws a friendly bunch of hardworking people. I love going there. I learn a ton and really appreciate how challenging, varied, and well-rounded the training is. Excellence, with encouragement and good will all around. Fabulous place. read more

I have been a member of 6 different gyms so far in my life, and Phoenix is far and away my favorite. Its set-up is a little different than your typical gym with classes or personal training only but that's what makes it stand out. Dmitri, Juliet and Kelly (the trainers) are awesome, they make every training session or class different, and there are always new moves and combinations to keep things interesting. I have done personal training with all of them and been to some of the bootcamp classes too and am always amazed at how they somehow manage to make time fly while coaxing out extra reps and moves that I wouldn't have thought were possible on my own. I started with the goal of losing weight before my wedding (mission accomplished!) and have kept going because it's the first place I have found where I actually enjoy and even look forward to exercising. read more

So I went for the first time last week and LOVED it. Friday workouts are expected to be hard since some people may take time off over the weekend or do some other type of activity like running or biking. This workout did not let me down and I felt it everywhere! I can't wait to go back! Kelly and Juliet were dutifully badass and at the same time, made sure I wasn't doing any of the exercises wrong (as you can really get hurt.) I also really like the fact that this is a 60 minute workout-it makes it worth the drive across town. read more

Before going to Phoenix, I played some tennis and went to yoga classes on a semi-regular basis, but had never belonged to a gym ever. Before PG, I had also never picked up weights or put on a pair of boxing gloves. I certainly did not know what a kettlebell was and absolutely could not do a push up or swing on the monkey bars. I had good intentions of working out more, but I never followed through especially after I had my daughter and had to go back to work. After a year of going to PG's 6:30am bootcamps 2-3x a week and doing some one-on-one training with Kelly, I am the most fit I have ever been in my 40 + years of life. I can push press 50 lbs, run more than 3 miles, do at least 15 push ups and not collapse, and swing all the way across the monkey bars. No, I don't have sculpted arms and six pack abs, but I am motivated to exercise on a daily basis and have had fewer lower back problems as I had in the past -- all in all making me feel better both physically and mentally. I am not a fan of group classes, but Dmitri and Kelly have created a welcoming and accommodating space offering a diverse array of challenging exercises - at times I am amazed at what they make us do -- that can be easily adjustable depending on your fitness level. There is a nice camaraderie in the class where everyone is encouraging and supportive. Kelly and Dmitri are genuinely warm and nice...they are also sadistic in a goofy and good way. That is, they are good at pushing you towards your edge, past what you think you can do, but not making you overdo it. And if you do, if at all, Kelly is v. good at being direct and telling you to take a break for a day or a week if need be, adjusting a particular exercise or movement and/or working with you one-on-one in class until you can join in with the rest of the group. What I like about Kelly too is that she is honest about her thoughts of living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle without being dogmatic about it. If I could afford it, I would definitely go to her more often for more one-on-one personal training sessions too. read more

Hands down, this is the best cross training program I have been too. I have been going for almost 2 years now and I must say I am in the best shape I have ever been. I've watched quite a few people start coming to class and at first they are a little overwhelmed by the workout, but Kelly & Dimitri are great instructors and encourage you to stick with it. They also watch you closely to make sure you are performing the exercise correctly and safely. People who stick with class are now in great shape and cannot get enough of the class, lets just say it becomes addicting. I've been to quite a few programs but none as good as this one. If you want a social hour workout, this is not the place for you, although everyone is very friendly. But if you want a good exercise that pushes you and makes you sweat I highly recommend this class. read more
