Typical setup at outdoor location with weights & machine provided by Sweat. Spaces between stations are far apart.
    Lexi S.

I absolutely love Sweat at both their outdoor and indoor locations. First of all, this is one of the few gyms in the Oakland area that has 6am workouts on weekdays, which are awesome to squeeze in before work. Second, all the instructors are amazing and each class is consistently high quality (great workout, fun music, good energy). Sweat lets you customize the difficulty level of your workout by providing a range of weights from light to heavy + a machine that you can use at any time instead of an exercise. Tips for a great class at the outdoor location: -Bring a layer (i/e a jacket) especially for morning classes. I usually wear my jacket in the beginning and then remove the layer once I'm warmed up. -It's nice (but not necessary) to have a yoga mat for floor exercises -Usually there is street parking available but it's nice to arrive a few mins early in case. Also at the outdoor location you will need a few minutes to choose your preferred weights and get settled at your station before class

    Pure beauty- weights!
    Jessica M.

Like everyone else, I was losing the motivation to workout at home. I signed up for Sweat's 4 week program. I was nervous for sure. Especially since I hadn't lifted weights regularly in some time. The outdoor space is impressive though. When you get there, you pick a piece of cardio equipment and you stay there the entire time of your workout so choose wisely... Then the instructor will inform you of what type of weights you need and there are a TON so no need to worry. When you are your station, you don't need to wear a mask. The workouts are tough and I love it! If you find during your workout you want a different weight, you can just go up and get it real quickly which is nice. All the instructors are great. Lots of street parking. Give Sweat a try for sure.

Love the outddors set up, and pretty easy to follow format. There was a communal vibe which I appreciate.

A gym in walking distance of my house in Elmwood Berkeley (because if I needed to get in my car and find parking, I would never go - though to be fair, there is easy parking around Immortal) 3.) Something that wouldn't break the bank, but would be an investment (so I would feel compelled to go regularly) Immortal Fitness (and especially my amazing trainer and gym owner Matt) checked all of those boxes times 1,000! Matt is not only a knowledgeable and skilled trainer, he is also a walking pep talk. He pushes me (both on trying a higher weight to lift - I am now up to 200lbs on the leg press!) but to be my favorite self in my life and business too. I frequently walk out of our 2x weekly 30-minute sessions feeling strong, fired up, and ready to face the day. While the gym isn't fancy, it has everything that you need, including a supportive community. If you are looking for a local, affordable gym in the Elmwood/telegraph neighborhood, Immortal Fitness is for you!

It's not that "you have to worship the top performer" attitude that some gyms have with their top athlete. Patrick has really changed the way I lift, and I've improved all my lifts by a significant margin after coming to GRCF. My clean and jerk went up about 90lbs, snatch up ~50lbs, and squat ~60lbs. My technique has improved greatly, and Patrick has really tailored the coaching experience to my exact body proportions instead of giving me a "one size fits all" experience. I've seen lots of members come in and start from scratch, and others come in with a significant background but there's something for everyone at GRCF. There's even strong man training and a fun community of people who are interested in all sorts of things. If you want to do a race, someone will do it with you! Due to me being completely new, I decided to get a wearable with my membership. It was originally $199 but I asked if I can get a student discount which brought it down to $189. The wearable was a pretty steep price and the person who checked me out did not tell me about the May promo they had going on (iirc half off a wearable) so I decided to get the wearable, towel, bag, and OTF water bottle pack which was around $129, which I would not have done without the wearable. I saw the May promo on the back of the bathroom door after class. There were times that I needed help same day so I texted the front staff hours before the class and they disregarded my question, which was disappointing for my first good impressions of the staff. Looking out from a monetary perspective (not informing a new joiner about promos) vs actually caring about a member (informing new joiner about promos and texting answers back to questions) would have made me return to OTF in the future, but as the saying goes, you can only skin a sheep once. I would join with the South Bay OTF studios as they seem less opportunistic, but again, the coaches here were amazing!
