We have now become regulars to their zoom offerings and while not the same as in person, having become familiar with Anya and Ashley, they are both very good about calling us out on adjustments to our form or slacking off. What I like most about these classes is that they always offer an option with some at home equipment if you have it (bands, weights, chairs, balls, etc) or alternative options if you don't have these things. I personally prefer full-body days but I also enjoy showing up to class not knowing what to expect. That element of surprise keeps you on your toes. This is probably more of a thing for classpass users as they don't say what the theme is for each class. Thanks Sweat for keeping me somewhat active during this crazy time.

They've adapted to teaching a mix of in-person and online classes and they've done an excellent job of making things challenging while keeping workouts accessible and adaptable as needed for everyone's personal situation. All of the trainers here are excellent, but most of the classes I take are with Deanna. Training with her is an incredibly positive experience--she is completely committed to helping her clients succeed, and not just in the gym. And on those days when my tank is empty or I'm not with it for whatever reason she's completely understanding and is able to adjust things to meet me where I'm at so I still get a good workout in. A lot of it may be behind the scenes, but she works just as hard as her clients at helping them achieves their goals. Phoenix Gym is an incredibly positive, supportive, and judgement-free zone, and being a member here has been a life-changing experience.

Bootcamp has it's own deal. I came here for a free trial bootcamp class (and I'm hooked and coming back on Friday). Luckily it was 6 ladies and myself. I really liked that it was small and everyone was friendly. It started with some jumprope, followed by push ups (and repeat 5 times). Then we got our hands wrapped and put on the boxing gloves! We hit punching bags. Pretty fun to feel like Muhammed Ali. :) my knuckles are red. Boxing is only on Wednesdays. Then we did squats in between the different types of boxing moves. Then we got out some yoga mats and did different types of crunches. Sadly I forgot where my abs once were :( but I'm hoping to find them soon. Anyway, tons of fun!

The coaches teach you and correct your form in a positive way that is so encouraging, you never feel self conscious. They'll help you with alternative exercises or modifications if you ever need it. It's also so nice to not have to plan out your workouts, since the coaches lay everything out for you. They make it easy so that you can just go in and have fun while working at your own pace. The absolute best part of this gym is the people. I've made so many friends and we're always laughing and chatting and being silly. We cheer each other on, celebrate PRs, and crack jokes between sets. It's a true community, and I always feel so uplifted every time I'm here. He has helped me understand the proper mechanics of all the core pillars of strength training, including squats, deadlifts, and bench presses. I spent a few days looking for a personal trainer close to work. After some searches on the Internet and Yelp reviews, I started reading reviews about Nu Fitness and Nick. After some positive reviews, I filled out the form and emailed him. I noted my fitness journey to this point in life and briefly explained what I wanted to accomplish going forward. I found myself in a terrible routine, work 12 hours, then heading to the local breweries for a few beers and dinner. Needless to say this didn't bode well for my wellbeing. Looking back over the years, I had gained control of health in my mid-30s, where I lost 40+ pound, gained strength and started running. Running led me to a period in my life that saw me conquer a few 50-mile races. An achievement I never thought I would attempt, hell I never thought I would run 5 miles. Life changed. Priorities changed and slowly I saw everything I had worked hard for slowly slip away. Now age 55, life wasn't getting any easier. I knew I was not very active. I also knew that my daily routine was not one for success. I decided I needed to help make a change in my life, but more importantly to make that change permanent. Previously I joined 24 Hour Fitness (never again) but found too many excuses NOT to go. Sound familiar? Searching Yelp for personal trainers, I ran down a local list in the Oakland/Alameda area. Reading profiles and reviews, checking website, I ran across a trainer, Nick Baltazar. It felt right. I emailed Nick with my story and filled out the form on the Nu Fitness website. It wasn't even a day and I had a response from Nick and we were talking about my fitness journey, where I had been and what I wanted to achieve. He was willing to work with my schedule to get three days of training. After a day of communication with Nick, he connected me with Wyatt. I met Wyatt at Nu Fitness, located at 2345 Broadway, parking in The Hive. Yes, they have easy parking and validation while you are at your session. This makes getting in and out quick and easy. I was highly impressed with the facility, the way Nick had spoke about it, I knew I would be. The work out areas were clean and profession, a small reception area, all Rogue power racks and weights, with room for everyone to work on their fitness goals. Wyatt Berreman, my personal trainer worked with me, after provided basic information from Nick on what I wanted to accomplish. He created a plan specifically for me, tracking my journey, weights and reps for each session. It's been just about 2 months, but its been reestablishing a workout routine. I have a sense of accomplishment, even through I don't see it in the mirror...yet. It will happen. Wyatt has been a wealth of knowledge and has helped create a plan for me to gain strength, balance and flexibility. But also work within my limitations due to previous surgeries on my knee and shoulder. I am very impressed with Nu Fitness, Nick, Wyatt and what they have to offer in the way of personal training. I've worked off the 20lbs I gained during Covid and feel stronger and more confident than ever, and it's all thanks to Dave and the incredible coaches at 9Round (shout out to Ovi)! A little background - I've exercised at a typical gym (24hr fitness, planet fitness, etc) most of my life. I fell off hard during Covid and was having so much trouble getting back into exercise. I had gained over 20lbs and my fitness and confidence were struggling. After failing to stay consistent with traditional gyms, I finally joined 9Round in January 2023. I'm so happy to say that I have stayed consistent for over a year now AND worked off my stubborn Covid weight and built muscle in the process, and am now happier and healthier than ever. So what makes the difference? 9Round is honestly just SO FUN in addition to being a great workout. You've never felt joy like punching a bag after a hard day's work. And getting to see your skills grow, your kicks land harder, and your punches more powerful? Incredible. I look forward to every gym session at 9Round, and the wonderful community the owner Dave and his coaches have built only adds to the experience. I love how excited they get to see everyone's' progress, the encouragement they give, and the helpful nutrition tips. A few other things - when I first joined 9Round I was stuck between them and Orangetheory Fitness. I tried both and decided to go with 9Round because of the flexibility of being able to drop in any time, which has been wonderful. What I didn't expect was how much the fun of kickboxing would add to the experience. If you're struggling to enjoy exercise, I would highly recommend going with 9Round, because the skill building aspect has honestly been a 10/10 for my motivation and happiness. Also worth noting is that no previous experience is required, and everyone is super friendly and encouraging for beginners. When I started I had no kickboxing experience - I could barely get 5 jump ropes in without tripping and my coordination on the bag was awful. Now I can jump rope 5 minutes straight with no trip ups and go rapid fire on the bag. The trainers are amazing about introducing you to the exercises and showing the proper form (including modifying the exercises if needed), so don't shy away if you've never kickboxed before! Dave also adds in so many wonderful extras at his location - he offers occasional drop-in classes for self-defense, yoga, Pilates, etc. In January he ran a 60-day challenge which included additional personal training and nutrition guidance which helped me drop my last 10 stubborn Covid pounds finally! He also has an In-Body machine so you can measure and track your muscle mass vs. body fat as you train, which is so much more valuable for tracking progress than weight alone! Anyhow, I could rant and rave all day about how amazing 9Round is, and specifically this 9Round location, but I think this sums up the major points. If you're curious, the first class is free so I'd highly recommend giving it a try!
