I have been going to Cindy's 3x a week since May 2021 (8 mos ago rn) and I have seen so many positive changes in my strength, body, and self image. I came in with 0 previous strength training (and it showed!!!) and have learned so much about lifting and abt what I can do with support and training. I also appreciate that she offers personal coaching and will always wear a mask inside / has HEPA filters, it has made training throughout COVID-19 feel very safe. She has coached me through steady practice working all the muscle groups, learning and correcting form, and slowly increasing weight and modifying my diet to be more protein based while accounting for vegetarianism (and stress eating). After starting work from home throughout the pandemic in a stressful job I was moving very little and put on a lot of weight, and Cindy has been instrumental in helping me with body awareness, and channeling my strength and building muscle. My body composition has changed a lot, and she has also always been thoughtful to go at the pace I was able to, and never push for specific results or types of restriction that I was nervous abt. If I could give Cindy 100 stars (or a million) on here, I would. I found Cindy and Oakland Strength on Yelp, and think it's about time I wrote my own review. Like many people, pandemic life left me with little to zero movement on a regular basis with lots of sitting and no real exercise routine whatsoever. I had a physical that shook me because they said I started to have high blood pressure, and I knew I had to change. When I tried to restart doing light yoga end of last year, I noticed pains in my right elbow area and left hip area that I couldn't ignore. I felt defeated that a practice I loved so much wasn't easy and stopped during the holiday season and found it hard to continue because I was so busy running my business. Then in the new year I did my research and reached out to Cindy, because I loved her attitude, her vibe and the fact that she specialized with working with busy professionals and entrepreneurs, and essentially she would help me just MOVE and get STRONG without having to think. Also, representation matters, and as another API woman, I cared about working with someone who understood me. Cindy and I started with 2 sessions a week since March, and the results were massive. She taught me how to think about my body as a whole and how strengthen each part surrounding the pain points in my hip and elbow, without injuring it. I learned that those parts ached because they were overcompensating for the lack of overall strength. Today I'm pain free and stronger than ever! Cindy is special! Training with her was a game changer for me, she helped break out of my plateau both physically and mentally. She has a deep understanding of strength training and the human psyche. She had helped me unlearned all the bad techniques I picked up from other strength training classes and taught me how to do them properly. In the beginning, honestly I wasn't sure about this, but then after every session with her, my body felt energized instead of broken so I was sold. This was the opposite of HIIT / Crossfit where I would rush through under the time limit regardless of the form and get both hurt and traumatized. She helped me work through that and helped me perfect my forms. (We would not start any reps until I got my form right. Even though it seems a bit too strict at first, this is very important to prevent injuries.) The training with Cindy not only made my body stronger, but it also upped my game in sports. I was pleasantly surprised as I was able to make wider cross court shots in Tennis and shoot balls consistently in the basket. I chalked it up to Cindy getting me stronger and drilling me on forms so now every shot I make I'm thinking about form (subconsciously or consciously). It's so cool to have this nice bonus!! Another awesome thing about Cindy, is that she is not in the game to train you forever. She is about training you so you can become independent and do it on your own for the rest of life. She doesn't have a streamlined approach like most gyms that gives you a book to track your progress, promises quick results, etc. She customizes it to where you are physically and mentally and helps you make incremental steps that you can stick with on your own - helping you form habits. I worked with trainers in the past, and was in relatively good form. But during the pandemic, I realized virtual sessions were not for me, and I quickly ended up gaining weight while losing my strength & muscle mass at the same time. Cindy's 1:1, in-person, clean gym was a great way for me to get back into the swing of things. My goals were to regain strength and basically fit back into my pre-Covid clothes! She's helped me reach both of those goals over the past 10 months that we've worked together, even as my own schedule fluctuated wildly. Previous to working with her, I kept a weight lifting log and did my own barbell training. Looking at it now, it's pretty laughable that I thought I was only capable of a certain amount of weight. I've blown past that easily with Cindy, and she's shown me I'm capable of far more than I ever thought possible. She's certainly no nonsense, but she's also just a really genuine human who gets that life happens. She adjusts our sessions for me if I'm feeling physically fatigued, or even if I'm feeling mentally overloaded. I'm never made to feel bad, and it really helps me to keep going. I found Cindy when I started a mental/physical regain. I had an ankle injury that left me doubting my ability to get back into the gym again. Prior to that, my fitness journey was full of frustration and plateaus. So after meeting with Cindy to talk about my goals (getting my confidence back, building strength in my ankle/balance the rest of my body), I said to myself fuck it, let's lock it in. I came to Cindy to learn the basics of weight training, so I could continue on afterward doing weight lifting at the gym on my own. Cindy was exactly what I needed. She is extremely attentive to form, and explains the breakdown of every movement, making sure each rep is intentional. I went in for a consult and already learned how to improve something fundamental that will help me for years to come: a proper unweighted squat. I can do dozens of them, but there are tiny postural things that are especially important for me as someone who has a over-pronated foot stance. Cindy is the BEST. I've made big strength gains since we started working together last year and beat my old Deadlift max from high school by 30 lbs! I've had a nagging shoulder injury from Crossfit for a couple years. Cindy has worked on strengthening the muscles around my shoulder. In the short six months we worked together, I had gained enough confidence to walk into the free weights area of my local gym to use the dumbbells or take over a squat rack. I learned about proper protein intake, and how I need to eat enough calories to fuel my muscles in order to see results. Workouts with Cindy are fun, varied and can push you to your limits. She focuses a lot on a proper form, building strong fundamentals and challenging you in the best way possible. Since I started working or with Cindy I've gotten much stronger, more confident around weights and my posture improved a lot. Before starting out with Cindy, I didn't do any weightlifting. Notes, after less than a year I can instruct my husband and I have many ideas what to do with the gym on my own. I've been working with Cindy since December 2021 and the results so far have gone far, far past what I could do on my own. Through her focus on stability and mobility, in addition to strength training, my body feels more solid and flexible than I can recall. I see Cindy looking for ways to motivate and push me all the time. She listens when I explain my nervousness around some exercises, but is always paying attention to how far she can push. It's a back-and-forth process but I trust that she's always looking to dial things in for me as we work together. Highly recommend Cindy. I came to her two years ago with some real nasty imbalances in my shoulders and right knee. These issues were causing all sorts of problems for me. Over the course of 5 months we worked together twice a week with a real focus on addressing my weaknesses. With consistency I far surpassed my strength Expectations and managed a double bodyweight deadlift which was one of my goals and also completed the hardest rock climb of my climbing career which id been training for with Cindy. Shortly after In an unfortunate accident I hurt my ACL and needed surgery. I've never considered myself an "athlete" nor would I even really consider myself a person that enjoys working out- I've always been intimidated by lifting and being in the gym. Ive had those classically aggressive trainers that just never made me learn what I was actually doing or why I was doing it in the first place. But Cindy is so great at making the experience approachable, while sneakily adding in physically demanding exercises. I've never deadlifted before and in a few short months my deadlift PR was 195lbs. That was crazy (for me!). I've also had some chronic joint pain and low back pain- our workouts are always flexible, so if something is bothering me, she switches things up to get my supporting muscles to help me feel better. I'd been playing sports or working out 4-5 days a week for years, but hadn't been very kind to my body in the process. For at least the last 3 years, I've been limping around with severe right knee pain. I'd sprint when playing sports over the weekend, my knee would throb and click all night and I'd have trouble stepping of a curb or jogging to catch the bus on Monday. Cindy helped me take a big step back, slow down, and address the assymetries that had been causing my pain. As a result, while there's still work to do, I am in much so much less pain. I'm beyond grateful. While everyone has different needs, my point is that Cindy is an expert at developing a program that's right for you. This review is long overdue. In short, be prepared to change when getting trained by Cindy, mentally and physically. She is an amazing coach and a beautiful soul. I waited to review because I was waiting to hit 300lbs for my deadlift with Cindy. She has definitely brought me from the early stages of 200s to my goal weight. I definitely have become stronger with her and not just physically! Basically if you want to get stronger and learn about your body, come to Cindy. She is patient and is willing to find solutions to your problems. Cindy is always learning so if something doesn't work for you, she will definitely find something else for you and cater your workouts to help your weaknesses. Mentally I have grown by taking Strong School with her for the past 6+ months. We have cried, laughed and lifted together during our times together, sometimes all 3+ for me in a training session. The morale of this class and her, is so high. This class and coach has pushed me behind my comfort zones and helped me grow even as a character.
