We went out for lunch and discovered this little Inn in the middle of beautiful Countryside.The menu had a fair selection and so I had fish and my other half had the curry which he says was great and he is a curry fanatic. The food was really good and the quality was excellent and the prices were extremely reasonable, the inn's atmosphere was family friendly and warm. As well as serving food this Inn has several rooms to let although it is normally full during the week, but weekends are possible during off peak periods, and the rates are very reasonable. The staff and landlady were very helpful and friendly and we will go there again as there was lots of interesting things to do in and around the countryside, there are couple of National Trust Properties with lovely gardens and hikes, fishing, watching the local rugby team, lovely riverside walks over the fields, or visit Leominster which is a quaint little market town. So if you are in the area and have a couple of days to spare go visit and have a meal

We were incredibly pleased with how lovely the place is. Great outdoor dining area, and incredibly cosy inside. The staff were incredibly courteous, and the food was just unbelievably good. I'll admit, when I first ordered, I did think that they were a little expensive. However, it turns out that was because I was expecting the food to be of a lower standard. What they brought out to us was worth every penny. This is a fantastic little place, a hidden gem. Worth driving over an hour to go to, seriously.

Glad we did, we really enjoyed our stay. Room 5 was really large with three single beds. The room was well furnished and was very clean. The only complaint was their procedure of turning the heat off three times a day. If you want to sleep in past 8, be prepared for a cold room. The real surprise at The Bateman Arms was the restaurant. We were fortunate to have two dinners with them. Our first night, together we had crawfish/prawn salad, garlic mushrooms, veggie lasagna, and pan fried duck breast with an orange and Drambuie sauce. The wife liked her lasagna and I loved the duck--the best I ever tasted. Our second evening we had tagliatelle and, pan fried stuffed chicken. The dessert of note was the Eton Mess. This was the first time we ever had this dish and it was really outstanding. Note: kitchen serving hours 1800-2100, different for Sunday.

It was no surprise then when I found out it was the same lady who runs the nearby campsite, The Pound. She is not a nice person to deal with, but she couldn't give a hoot how she deals with paying customers from all accounts. Pros: It's right on the River Wye and has a landing site The view of the River Wye from the beer garden is amazing The young bar staff were pleasant despite their bosses behaviour Cons: The food was just ok. My beef and mushroom pie had a gravy which which was a tad too strong The owner is not a nice person to deal with I can't imagine we'll stop here again. Myself and my husband would rather stop at a field further on the river which we've stayed at before - with sheep poo, no facilities and cook our own food - than give her our custom again. And I'm sure she could couldn't give two hoots.

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

Update: 27/11/14…read more Given that it was a Wednesday and no good weather the place was nearly full. The point of the update is that two colleagues and me went to use the vouchers from previous visits. I held 9 vouchers. 6 vouchers gives £12 of the bill. No problem. I mentioned that the other 3 expired 30/11/14. Not another problem, swapped for 3 that expire November 2015. Plus 2 more for the meals that had been paid for.... So, 5 new vouchers.... That's service..... and guarantees my return. 27/5/14 OK. They get their star back. Wife loved the place. The kids enjoyed their food too. Service was good. Had a slight problem getting to the place by taxi, as the driver didn't have the post code. I tried to ring the restaurant on the number they rang me back on earlier in the day. No answer. The food is really good, the toasties are especially nice at luch time and they have special meals in the evening. It is full of cool jazz things such as saxophones, pictures and newspaper articles. At weekends they have live music (which are always good jazz bands not that rubbish you sometimes get).
