I ordered a pint of ale and when I tasted it, I immediately realised that it had a citrus taste, although there was no indication on the pump of that being the case. When I asked behind the bar if they thought the same, the stand-in bar manager on duty that night agreed that it did have a citrus taste to it. When I asked if my pint could be changed, given the fact that I found it unpalatable, he curtly replied that if there was nothing wrong with it he saw no reason that it should be replaced. I accept that he was under no obligation to replace my pint but it was more his negative, unhelpful and uncompromising attitude, with aggressive undertones, that disturbed me most. Almost invariably, I have found staff at the pub to be polite, considerate, accommodating and attentive to their customers' needs and requests. It has always been one of the pubs strong points. However, this was not the case with the young man that I encountered that evening. When I suggested that he might benefit from some training around customer service, he swore at me under his breath. When I challenged him about what he had said he just walked away. I recognise that this individual is a one-off and I believe his manner was partly motivated by an effort to impress the young lady working with him, showing her what a strong and forceful person he considers himself to be. I don't think it really had that effect upon her. I was left wondering into what level my favourite pub had descended when an individual like him, with an obvious attitude problem, is placed in charge of the bar, even for a limited period of time. The result of our difference of opinion was that what should have been a pleasant and relaxing time, instead left me feeling disrespected and uncomfortable. Needless to say, once we had finished our drinks we left the pub.

The beer as to be expected is fantastic and best of all, cheap. Compared to similar pubs and bars that sell good quality beer from small breweries, they don't go over board with the prices with the most expensive being £2.80. It's refreshing to not only see a brewery's pub ditch the high prices but also the pretension of most places nowadays. The guy Behind the bar, Mark, was friendly and great to talk to, even offered to pay for my pint when I ran out of money! He spoke about the brewery in depth and about Birmingham in general which was fascinating to hear about its past. It's brilliant to see a rare place like this and I really hope it thrives and succeeds cause it would be good to see old pubs like this make a comeback. Not even mentioned all the events they have that seem to make use of all the local talent, either. Definitely a place that speaks to what's great about Birmingham and will be going back very soon.

We ordered the vegetarian pie with mashed potatoes and peas and kale. This dish is served with a delightful mushroom gravy for drizzling over the whole dish. The vegetables in the pie are clearly fresh and not from a bag of frozen peas, corn and carrots. I love the dark, moody decor. The walls are dark grey, while all the decorations are gold, black and white. The tables are cosy, but I'm not a fan of the lumpy barstools, so avoid those if you can.

Just off Broad Street, the Tap & Spile is a welcome rest-bite from the usual hustle and bustle of the main strip, offering something slightly different as opposed to the consistently repetitive bars offered elsewhere. From the outside the Tap & Spile may not look particularly appealing, maybe creating a 'local pub for local people' . However, it couldn't be further from the truth, well it could. Local people do drink there, as you would expect, however, upon my numerous visits for example, they have always been welcoming and friendly in what is an extremely relaxed environment. Definitely worth a visit, even if just for a few in the sun, or maybe for a quick one before you head to Broad Street. Either way I would recommend the Tap & Spile to anyone who happens to be passing by.

I was also hungry and was told that the only food options were a couple of sandwiches. But I was assured that the sandwiches were quite good. I was told by the bartender that the cheese and onion was the best. Fast forward to a couple of seconds later as I stared in horror at this abomination before me. Perhaps they were just ribbing this yank. I will include a photo. It was a dry roll with the hardest block of cheese know to man and four gigantic rings of raw onion. And that is it! I could barely smell it much less eat it. I love the UK for so many reasons--their sandwiches are not one of them. Perhaps caramelize the onions, or pickle the onions, add some mayo or mustard, anything would have improved this thing. I should have know better as I am still trying to figure out the breakfast ham roll that is ham on a roll (no egg, no cheese, no condiment, no thanks).
