It posseses open fireplaces, and a choice of cozy tables for 2 or 4, and long tables for larger parties in the back. HRH Prince Charles, Dylan Thomas have both visited here, to sample the beer still brewed on the premesis. The food is pricey, but what a meal you get for your money! A huge plateful that would be enough for two! the most reasonable is the Roast dinners, approx £10 a head. The walls and ceilings of the Inn are covered in memorobilia, from horse brasses to farming tolls, there is enough to occupy your mind while you wait for your meal. On your way to the loo you will encounter a full suit of armour, and in the back are fish tanks, and a talking parrot!

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The place was busy as it was the jazz/fringe festival weekend so the clientelle was of all ages (a bit annoying having babies/kids screaming thoughout the meal) including elderly who came in through the fire door for easy access. Glad we did, we really enjoyed our stay. Room 5 was really large with three single beds. The room was well furnished and was very clean. The only complaint was their procedure of turning the heat off three times a day. If you want to sleep in past 8, be prepared for a cold room. The real surprise at The Bateman Arms was the restaurant. We were fortunate to have two dinners with them. Our first night, together we had crawfish/prawn salad, garlic mushrooms, veggie lasagna, and pan fried duck breast with an orange and Drambuie sauce. The wife liked her lasagna and I loved the duck--the best I ever tasted. Our second evening we had tagliatelle and, pan fried stuffed chicken. The dessert of note was the Eton Mess. The staff were friendly and after we order the drinks and food they told us to sit down anywhere but we asked to eat outside and they set a table for us. The Menu` was very decent with quite few English fares. We went for sausage and mash and although it didn't send me to Heaven it was tasty and freshly prepared. There was a little bit of waiting involved but it was compensated by the politeness and friendliness of the staff. The veggies were nice and crunchy even though I don't understand the need to serve roast potatoes with Sausage and MASH !!! I have to say this is not the only Pub that does that. Please, be careful with the amount of butter on the garlic bread it was drenched in it, barely edible. If we happen to be in the area some other times we will go back. We were told that on Sunday they had the whole pig roasted for supper but unfortunately we couldn't go because we were in Hay on Wye for a Concert. Shame, I would have loved that!

We were incredibly pleased with how lovely the place is. Great outdoor dining area, and incredibly cosy inside. The staff were incredibly courteous, and the food was just unbelievably good. I'll admit, when I first ordered, I did think that they were a little expensive. However, it turns out that was because I was expecting the food to be of a lower standard. Lots of staples and goodies in the store which serves the local villagers. At the bar is an assortment of beers, wine, and liquor. Lots of colorful conversation with regulars who frequent the pub.
