The Charlton Arms is just on the edge of Ludlow, just off the Ludford Bridge. It has fantastic views from the terrace along the fast flowing River Teme, and makes for a stunning place to have a meal.
The car park is encircled by a cliff face, and the Charlton Arms is perched at the apex of the bridge and the river. Inside is a bustling bar on one side, full of good natured locals, on the other side is the dining room that makes full use of the panoramic view of the river. The tables are large and well spaced, and bathed in spring sunshine, giving a nice relaxed atmosphere in which to dine. Being one of the very few places in Ludlow to get an evening meal on a Sunday, we were fortunate to get a table (Booked seamlessly by the power of the internet!). The menu was fairly comprehensive offering a choice of roasts - chicken, pork etc, as well as a good variety of other dishes. We plumped for the sea bass, and the sausage and mash, with a side order of fresh vegetables. The Ludlow Cumberland sausages were very tasty, complimented well with the mash and the rich onion gravy. However, my wife's whole sea bass, (with bones intact), with wilted spinach and new potatoes, was very bland. The fish had almost no taste at all, the whole dish needed a sauce to liven it up; an expensive misfire at £15.
We both went for a dessert, I went for the dark chocolate and toffee tart, with mint ice cream, a nice dessert, not sure it needed the toffee though; my wife had the treacle tart with clotted cream ice cream. Both good desserts, but the very bland fish main pulled the score down to a three. Great service and an unbelievable view, but would we return, not sure. read more
