I was really hoping for some good old home cooking food unfortunately it was not but could have been. All I got was a breakfast sandwich.with sausage and steroids it was huge almost double the size in my English muffin that was super amazing and was super excited about that and egg was great. Sadly, they put processed cheese on it, which kind of ruined the whole thing and wish my English muffin was a nice crispy toasted which it was not. Darn it. We were in town for a funeral and were looking for some good home cooking. We should have kept looking. We hadn't eaten all day and got there around 3 pm on a Friday. No one was there except our delightful waitress and her coworkers with great 80s music playing in the background We were seated and greeted promptly. After deciding on the grilled chicken breast and a cup of the vegetable beef soup, I was offered another side. I asked our waitress what she would recommend and was told they are "known for their potato salad," so I went for it. Then the fun begins. My soup came out in about 10 minutes and smelled off. I asked my friend if it smelled off to her, too, but dying from hunger, she said it smelled good so I began eating it. It was more like a stew than a soup with what looked like mealworms versus chunks of beef and included some sliced carrots. I haven't died yet, but still wouldn't eat it again. The crackers and Diet Mountain Dew were good tho. After another 15-20 minutes, our food arrived. My friend ordered the breakfast special and hers was edible but not great. We both looked at my pathetic food, however, and were trying to decipher what I had ordered. Not a good start to a rather pricey meal. What I was given were two VERY skinny, VERY overdone small chicken breasts. If they were stacked on one another, they may have been 1/4" thick. Along with that shoe leather were two small scoops of what they call potato salad. Because they are "known for it" doesn't mean known in a good way. I think Grandma mistook the sugar for the salt because that's exactly what it tasted like. Even after trying to doctor it up with salt and pepper, it was a no-go. Still being hungry after trying to saw thru the chicken, I decided to try the dinner roll. Expecting it to be warm was another mistake. The only saving grace was that the butter was soft, so that helped me choke it down. My dinner came with a scoop of sherbet that was very sweet. A couple bites helped to cleanse my palate after the atrocity of what they called food. Again, our waitress was a delight, which is why I didn't complain and send my food back. The music and Diet Mountain Dew were good. That's all the good I can say about this place. There was no mention of Grandpa and that's no surprise. I'm sure he left years ago to get a decent meal...and so should you. I paid $27 for my "meal". Never again! I'm thinking Grandma probably has either high pressure because of the lack of seasoning or maybe dementia. Why doesn't her family tell her maybe it's time to hang it up and enjoy her tasteless life? read more

The wait staff are very friendly and the food was exactly how expected. It is a greasy spoon but thats great in my book. Nice fresh coffee. Yeah the cups are on the small side but i like mine fresh and the service was fantastic. How this place was given 1 star is ridiculous. If you want fancy go somewhere else. Stopped by because we heard that they have excellent pie. It was the worst experience in a restaurant we've had in a long time. The decor is bizarro, the waitstaff seemed all to be in a funk, no attentiveness whatsoever, and the "excellent" pie was so gluey and gelatinous that my daughter slid her plate to me and said "mom, please eat this, I feel bad I don't like it." after taking one bite. I've never seen anyone pass on pie, but we were two for two. I shoveled what I could down on her behalf and we left. Weird place, weird pie. Do yourself a favor and head over to Stockholm Pies in Stockholm, WI. Homemade crust is flaky deliciousness, with a ton of interesting flavors to choose from. Service is SLOW! The kitchen is way too small for the size of this restaurant and it shows when the place is busy. We stopped after our grandson's soccer game and our timing to be seated was perfect. Booth open and we sat centerstage to the operation. The waitress took a couple minutes before she noticed us and then reassured us that she would get to us. About 5 minutes later the drinks were served and the order taken. Did I mention the service was SLOW? That was the fastest service we would get. It took 30 minutes to get our food. Way too long! However, being centerstage we could see the lone chef and lone food preparer working their tails off on this tiny grill. The food once served was pretty good, but nothing earth shattering! I had a sausage and cheese omelet. They just cut up sausage links...really? Like I said, nothing spectacular here. The place has the potential to be great and the last time I was there was over 20 years ago. It seemed better back then, but then again I don't have my YELP review to compare visits. Not sure I would give it a second chance unless I only saw the place half full. My first time there. My husband and I had breakfast. I ordered 2 eggs scrambled with cheese, bacon, hash browns English muffin and coffee. The coffee cups are pretty small. Over the course of my breakfast I had my cup filled about 7 times. Kinda ridiculous in my Opinion. The bacon had an odd Smokey flavor which I was not expecting. I would have rather had regular bacon. The scrambled eggs were good, the cheese was nice and melty. Everything needed salt pretty badly. Bacon was crisp like I asked for, even though it tasted kind of weird. I was disappointed there were not other # choices. Like a pancake breakfast deal with eggs and bacon, or something like that. The water cups were plastic with rough edging on the top. They clearly have been there since this place opened. It was rough on my mouth drinking water. The gravy was okay but very floury. And again no salt. I miss southern gravy for sure. It was a cheap meal but I will not be going back again. I think Dennys is probably better. read more

We've lived in Rochester for a year now and been searching for a good hometown diner for cheap breakfasts; some friends of ours who know food recommended this place to us and I'm glad we stopped in. Some of the friendliest service we've had in town and very attentive--servers checked on us often and kept the hot, fresh coffee flowing. Outstanding, fluffy pancakes served with hot syrup and butter pushed just to the side (so it doesn't melt into a puddle on only the top pancake!). Good hashbrowns and great toast options with the eggs (dark rye and English muffins in addition to white and wheat). My husband really enjoyed his omelette, though don't expect gourmet (looks like canned mushrooms). One or two past reviews said it wasn't the cleanest, but the place seemed really clean to me. For instance, I happened to be brought a new, still-vacuum-sealed bottle when I asked for ketchup (which says to me that they're not just dumping the remnants of ten bottles into another at the end of them day, something the diner I worked at in high school had us do and which presents a number of concerns). Everything on the table was clean and the place feels well-kept (just a little old-fashioned--but hey, it's "grandma's"). Grandma lives in a small strip mall just north of downtown on Broadway. At least her kitchen does. It's a smaller diner with touches of home. A line of plates adorns the wall near the ceiling. Breakfast here was great. I had biscuits and gravy. A tasty gravy atop a tender biscuit with a side of hash browns. I ordered sausages on the side. The sausage links here are great. They are either made in house or nearby. They were crispy with a delicious interior. My wife had the 3 egg omelet. Very nice. The little one had a kids meal of French toast with a sausage link. It pushed around the plate very nicely. She even ate some. Service was friendly and quick. This is a nice place to have breakfast with the family. read more
