We did a birthday celebration here, so quite a variety of food was ordered. Queso and chips was meh. More pico than cheese. The cheese curds were average. Entrees got mixed reviews. No standouts. The Reuben, stir fry, burgers, broasted chicken, and steak were tasty, but unsatisfying. The steak was ordered medium and delivered medium rare. All the burgers appeared to be on the rare side. Nine people and a toddler, all told, just shy of $300, with tip. Service was good, attentive. It has the neighborhood bar feel. Would we go again? I'm so happy we just so happened to find this little hole in the wall bar and grill because they have such a great selection of food and the service is outstanding! We tried this place twice and both times everything has been delicious! And the soup has been, fresh, HOT, & made from scratch delicious!!! Ordered a pick up order for myself and coworkers and was very sadly disappointed. One person ordered cheese curds that had no cheese inside. Not sure if whoever was making them didn't realize that all of the cheese oozed out, but definitely the most disappointing cheese curds we've ever had. It has been years since I've been to this restaurant and nothing has changed. I had the southwest chicken salad which could have been delicious. However, the chicken was so tough. I couldn't cut it with a saw let alone the knife they provided. Mixed greens would have been nice in the salad however it was just iceberg lettuce. Our bill came to $65.14, the waiter asked us if we needed change out of the $100.15 that I gave him. Then he brought me back the improper change. I don't think he wanted to be there. We were stuck in Rochester over New Year's, due to appointments at Mayo and my mom didn't feel like leaving the hotel room due to her pain. I thought broasted chicken (on of her favorites) might make her feel better. I recognize that carry out is usually not as good as eat-in and the chicken was okay. Avoid the mashed potatoes. They ware instant mashed potatoes with overly salty, canned gravy. I was disappointed there was not a veggie with the chicken or anything but one side. The Pepsi was out so I had to make another stop to pick up Mom's drink. By the time I got back to the hotel, we had to microwave everything. I think we will pass on Beetles next time. read more

My husband and I have been here a few times over the years, but I think this was probably our last visit. The place was packed, and they were busy, but the first impression was how dirty the floor looked with popcorn all over the place, also a few napkins. I ordered a Guinness on tap and the $12 (!) Walleye sandwich. I opted for broiled over fried walleye. The beer was flat and the sandwich came as a pale unseasoned piece of fish on an open hoagie bun. No lettuce or tomato. There were three pickle slices cowering underneath the bun on the plate. Came with a small tub of lemony "tartar sauce" which was not very good. My husband ordered the walleye wrap, which looked a little more substantial, but still nothing to write home about. We both "upgraded" to a "premium" side of a garden salad- they were pretty good but the dressings were not. And why, in the land of the Mayo Clinic, is a salad not a standard side? So irritated. I am a local and for the last few years I get a meal from here every once and a while and this last time im just disappointed more then ever before. I ordered a Buffalo chicken sandwich which was way more expensive then it should be. $12. And I upgraded to tots. So my box has 2 buns a peice of half cooked chicken with half ass rubbed on Buffalo sauce. And hand full in a half of tots. Like for real. Not even lettuce or anything else. For that price I could of gone to the store grabbed a bag of chicken and buns and made it myself. Ate here for dinner with my family. We all had an overall great experience. Here are a couple takeaways: The patty melt was very good. I've had it a couple times now and it (as well as the fries) are great. Their boneless chicken wings were good, but definitely different from traditional boneless wings. They looked essentially like cut-up pieces of chicken breasts..so in that regard they were definitely big, juicy wings. I think they could have used more batter to help retain/soak up the sauce flavors though. If they did this, I think they would be exceptional. My wife had the fried egg burger which she liked but wished the egg was more runny (the egg was a little done). A small complaint for an otherwise good burger. Brother in law stuck with his favorite open-faced turkey sandwich which he enjoys. Kids didn't complain with their traditional kids-meal choices. The prices were very reasonable. I thought the wings (on paper) seemed expensive at over $1/wing until I saw how big they were. Waitress was extremely nice and took great care of us. The staff as well as the patrons were composed of all ages, so feel free to take your entire family there and be treated to a good time. read more

While I've lived in Rochester my entire 65 years, I'd never gone here until Newts North seemed to be taken over by millennials that appear to be there to collect the paycheck, nothing more. That said, service has never been an issue at Beetles! The appetizers have all been very good! My personal favorite is the onion rings, always crunchy and delicious. Entrees, unfortunately, have been a recurring disappointment! My first burger was on, just ok. They have one with an over easy egg on it, thought I'd take a run at that. Apparently the cook didn't think the steer wasn't dead enough as the burger was so burnt and dry I couldn't even chew it, and yes I have all my original teeth! Two weeks ago I had the hot ham and cheese. That was decent, but how can you possibly screw that up? Today was the last straw. Tried the chicken cordon bleu sandwich, which is basically the ham and cheese with a chicken breast thrown on. The chicken was so thick I couldn't get my mouth around it, and so dry and gristly it was impossible to eat, and flavor wise, blah. They really need to take more time prepping, pounding down and marinating chicken breast to tenderize, infuse flavor, and just make it edible. Wild Bills is a half mile away. Perfect evening to sit outside and have a beer and some quesadillas. It was later at night on a week night so there really weren't many people on the patio which was night. I'll say upfront that I do plan to go back sometime that isn't a Friday night during Happy Hour. Went on a Friday night due to the gang at work having a Happy Hour get together. First of all, the parking lot is far too small. There was nowhere to park in the lot or for about three blocks up the street. Parked across the busy street and had to risk becoming roadkill (no crosswalk for blocks) to get there. Once there, there was no place to sit. The person who had arranged this had called early in the week to make a reservation for 40 at 4:00. "20 at 4:30" chirped the reservation-taker. "No, 40 @ 4:00" replied the reservation-maker. "Mmmm, okie" chirped the reservation-taker who apparently stuck with her first statement because there was nowhere near enough tables reserved and any time the group tried to grab a table as it opened up they were chastised by the waitstaff. To be fair, the place was PACKED. However, it was several minutes before our drink order was taken, we were never offered a menu, let alone food (though others in the party were eating food... and it looked delicious..but this was not our night to find out). The drink prices were reasonable. We had to hunt down the waitress to pay. I gave her more than a decent tip so in case we ever go back we won't get an automatic "oh, you were with the big party who had $300 worth of food/beverages and all I got was a $5 tip" snub. I'll go back another time, to give it a fair chance, but am honestly not expecting anything too great. A parking spot in the same ZIP code would be nice, though. read more

And the reason I know this is not because I am a frequent patron of Beetles; it's because I use the dry cleaner over there. Anyway... was not impressed. The food is average at best. If I'm sitting around wondering where I should go for some decent bar food, Beetles would not be in my top 7 (and this is Rochester...)
